Shin Megami Tensei 5<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>is one of the most anticipated games of 2021, and along with a remaster of\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 3, <\/em>fans\u00a0<\/em>series have a lot to look forward to this year. After all, it’s no secret that Atlus had a phenomenal 2020\u00a0with the massive success of\u00a0Persona 5 Royal\u00a0<\/em>and the PC port of\u00a0Persona 4 Golden.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Looking to\u00a0replicate last year’s successes, Atlus could make 2021 a definitive year for the\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>franchise if\u00a0it markets the series right. For the first time in publisher history,\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>5<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>will be a simultaneous global release meaning Western fans won’t have to wait for\u00a0a localization. With this in mind, it’ll be exciting to see where Atlus decides to take the\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>series in 2021.<\/p>\n

Although\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>has been around for three decades, it wasn’t until recently that Atlus made an effort to translate and bring the games to the West. The\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>games used to form the core of the series<\/a>, while\u00a0games like\u00a0Persona\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Devil Summoner<\/em>\u00a0were considered spin-offs, at least until Persona<\/em> began making its own name for itself. Although the\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>games share certain elements with its spinoffs such as recruiting, fusing, and summoning demons, the games\u00a0usually have a heavier emphasis on dungeon crawling and combat mechanics.<\/p>\n

Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>is very different from what\u00a0Persona\u00a0<\/em>fans might be accustomed to. Featuring a much darker, post-apocalyptic tone and higher difficulty,\u00a0the\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>series has often drawn comparisons to\u00a0the\u00a0Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>franchise<\/a>. While the\u00a0Persona\u00a0<\/em>series is split between dungeons and character building via social links,\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei<\/em>\u00a0series\u00a0<\/em>opts for longer dungeons and a more robust combat system.<\/p>\n

Though it isn’t as popular as the big\u00a0JRPG franchises like\u00a0Final Fantasy\u00a0<\/em>or\u00a0Dragon Quest,\u00a0<\/em>Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>maintains a strong following in both Japan and the West, and has generated critical acclaim. Shin Megami Tensei 5<\/em>\u00a0will be the first mainline game<\/a> in five years,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a02021 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for fans of the series.<\/p>\n

At this point, it’s\u00a0evident that the\u00a0Persona\u00a0<\/em>series has far eclipsed the popularity of\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei,\u00a0<\/em>particularly in the West. Despite original being a spinoff of\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei,\u00a0Persona <\/em>has\u00a0proven to be a lot more accessible with its lighter tone and lower difficulty. In order for\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 5\u00a0<\/em>to reach the level of success that\u00a0Persona 5\u00a0<\/em>achieved<\/a>, Atlus will need to find strategies to market the series properly.<\/p>\n

Beyond just comparisons to\u00a0Persona 5,\u00a0<\/em>Atlus should try to play off the strengths of the\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>series<\/a> as well. Catering towards\u00a0a\u00a0demographic that enjoys retro-style difficulty and dungeon-crawling mechanics can go a long way in reaching a larger audience, and highlighting the difficulty of the series as a strength like the\u00a0Dark Souls <\/em>franchise is also important.\u00a0Over the years, the\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>series has also\u00a0become known for its mature content and thought-provoking stories. Marketing the game around these strengths will likely help\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 5\u00a0<\/em>attract\u00a0newcomers to the series.<\/p>\n

One important thing to note is that\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 5\u00a0<\/em>looks to be a Nintendo Switch exclusive<\/a>. This shouldn’t be surprising for fans of the series considering the dungeon-crawling mechanics are more suited for handheld consoles and the past few mainline\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>games have all appeared on the Nintendo 3DS. Although\u00a0PC and PS5\u00a0owners might be disappointed, it’s important to note that Atlus’s stance on ports seem to have shifted in the past few years.<\/p>\n

Following the massive success of\u00a0Persona 4 Golden\u00a0<\/em>on Steam<\/a>, Sega has stated that it wants to bring more Atlus games to the PC and is more receptive to the idea of ports as a whole. In fact, Atlus recently released a survey asking players about their interest in Nintendo Switch ports of series like\u00a0Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, Etrian Odyssey, Catherine, Devil Summoner,\u00a0<\/em>and more. Although\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>will likely not appear on other consoles at the time of its release, Atlus appears to be more open to the idea of ports and remakes.<\/p>\n

Another big reason why 2021 may be a definitive year for the\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>series is because Atlus announced a full remake of\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 3.\u00a0<\/em>Known as\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne\u00a0<\/em>in the West<\/a>, it was originally released 17 years ago for the PS2. The game was released to both critical and commercial success and, as a result, was the first mainline\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>game to be released in the West. It generated a cult following\u00a0in the years after its release\u00a0and is often considered a classic in the JRPG genre.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 3\u00a0<\/em>remaster will be in full HD and has a release date of spring 2021 for the PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Given the recent success of\u00a0Persona 4 Golden,\u00a0<\/em>there have also been rumors that\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 3\u00a0<\/em>will appear on PC<\/a> later on. For players new to the game,\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 3\u00a0<\/em>tells the tale of Demi-fiend, a high school student in Tokyo who gets caught in the middle of\u00a0the apocalypse. Demi-fiend soon runs into the devil, Lucifer,\u00a0granting\u00a0him the ability to control demons.<\/p>\n

The Japanese version of\u00a0the\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 3\u00a0<\/em>remaster was released last year in October.\u00a0Including a number of new features such as fully voiced cutscenes and additional difficulty settings, fans can expect the English release to have similar changes. The most interesting change is the new “Merciful” difficulty setting which makes the game easier for players who just want to experience the story and\u00a0different endings. With this option available, Shin Megami Tensei 3\u00a0<\/i>will be a lot more accessible<\/a> to newcomers, and there’s a good chance that\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 5\u00a0<\/em>will feature\u00a0a similar option.<\/p>\n

With\u00a0the announcement of both Shin Megami Tensei 5\u00a0<\/em>and the\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 3\u00a0<\/em>remaster, 2021 may be one of the most important years for the\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>franchise.\u00a0Looking to replicate the recent success of the\u00a0Persona\u00a0<\/em>series, Atlus\u00a0has made\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>more accessible and marketable leading up to both releases. If Atlus plays their cards right,\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 5\u00a0<\/em>has the potential to be massive, and the future of the franchise will depend on its success. Along with the announcement of\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 5\u00a0<\/em>as the first simultaneous worldwide release<\/a> for Atlus, fans and newcomers to the series will have plenty to look forward to in 2021.<\/p>\n
