Some fans want the sequels scrubbed from existence and retconned from the <em>Star Wars<\/em> timeline, while others believe they represent a new benchmark for the saga. But the 50% drop in worldwide box office returns between <em>Episodes VII<\/em> and <em>IX<\/em> would suggest that most casual viewers were pretty ambivalent about the trilogy.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/every-star-wars-movie-ranked-rotten-tomatoes\/\">Every Star Wars Movie, Ranked By Rotten Tomatoes<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Since there was no roadmap from the beginning and the creative team just made it up as they went along, the <em>Star Wars<\/em> sequels don\u2019t even really hold up as a complete three-volume work in the way that the two halves of Lucas\u2019 saga do. And it\u2019s a shame, as some of the characters it introduced had a lot of potential that was wasted.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Best: Finn<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/John-Boyega-as-Finn.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>John Boyega was seriously underserved in this trilogy \u2013 by the end, he was reduced to yelling Rey\u2019s name \u2013 and the actor himself <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/disney-john-boyega-star-wars\/\">called Disney out for it<\/a>. As a character, Finn had so much potential that was squandered. He arguably should\u2019ve been the hero of the sequel trilogy. A Force-sensitive ex-Stormtrooper who was orphaned and brainwashed by a ruthless dictatorship would\u2019ve made a much more interesting protagonist for a <em>Star Wars<\/em> trilogy \u2013 and a better example of a non-Skywalker \u201cnobody\u201d \u2013 than Rey Palpatine.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of meandering through the galaxy in search of random plot devices, the sequel trilogy could\u2019ve charted Finn\u2019s journey from Stormtrooper to Resistance fighter to Luke Skywalker\u2019s padawan to Jedi warrior who takes down the First Order and defeats Kylo Ren.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Worst: General Hux<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/General-Hux.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Domhnall Gleeson is a fine actor, as seen in <em>Ex Machina<\/em>, <em>About Time<\/em>, and the <em>Black Mirror<\/em> episode he was in, but anyone who only knew him from the <em>Star Wars<\/em> sequels would think he was a smarmy, hateable bit player. His character General Hux is resoundingly one-note and painfully unlikable.<\/p>\n<p>Hux is shown to be Kylo Ren\u2019s sniveling underling who disagrees with everything he tells Snoke, apparently just because he hates him.\u00a0<em>The Rise of Skywalker<\/em> seems to confirm\u00a0this when Hux becomes a turncoat for the Resistance and says, \u201cI don\u2019t care if you win, I just need Kylo Ren to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Best: Poe Dameron<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Oscar-Isaac-as-Poe-Dameron.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Another character with a lot of potential that was wasted and an incredible actor whose talents were\u00a0underused is Poe Dameron, the hotshot Resistance pilot played by Oscar Isaac.<\/p>\n<p>In <em>The Force Awakens<\/em>, Poe was introduced as a starfighter pilot with Luke Skywalker\u2019s passion and Han Solo\u2019s charisma. In <em>The Last Jedi<\/em>, he staged a mutiny because his superior led everyone to believe they were going to die instead of just explaining her plan. In <em>The Rise of Skywalker<\/em>, he\u2019s randomly revealed to have a history as a spice runner, contrary to the backstory already laid out by a bunch of books and comics by writers struggling to explain <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/star-wars-rise-of-skywalker-cut-characters-storylines\/\">Abrams\u2019 incessant \u201cmystery box\u201d teases<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Worst: Kylo Ren<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Kylo-Ren.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Adam Driver is a fantastic actor who brought as much nuance and pathos as possible to the material he was given in the\u00a0<em>Star Wars<\/em> sequel trilogy, but <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/star-wars-best-kylo-ren-memes\/\">there was very little to work with<\/a>. The themes of the story kept changing as the reins of the trilogy kept swapping hands.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/star-wars-best-dark-side-games\/\">Star Wars: The 10 Best Video Games That Let You Join The Dark Side<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kylo Ren was conceived to be a wannabe Darth Vader who isn\u2019t as menacing. But since Snoke turned out to be useless, Hux was laughably weak, and Phasma was sidelined, if Kylo wasn\u2019t going to be an intimidating villain, then there was no villain in this whole trilogy who seemed to pose a real threat. Ben Solo\u2019s redemption in <em>The Rise of Skywalker<\/em> doesn\u2019t feel earned in the slightest; it just peddles a toxic romance to pander to Reylo shippers.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Best: Captain Phasma<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Captain-Phasma.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>In <em>The Force Awakens<\/em>, Captain Phasma was introduced as a badass First Order commander who keeps the Stormtroopers in line. Gwendoline Christie knocked her performance out of the park and Phasma quickly became a fan-favorite side villain like Boba Fett that fans looked forward to seeing more of.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Phasma&#8217;s arc in the trilogy turned out exactly like Fett\u2019s. In the next movie, she proves to be hilariously easy to defeat and goes out completely unceremoniously with Finn\u2019s corny \u201cchrome dome\u201d line.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Worst: DJ<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Benicio-del-Toro-in-Star-Wars-The-Last-Jedi.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Benicio del Toro\u2019s hacker character in <em>The Last Jedi<\/em> is technically unnamed, but he goes by \u201cDJ,\u201d which stands for \u201cDon\u2019t Join.\u201d The guy\u2019s name is literally \u201cDon\u2019t Join\u201d and Finn and Rose are surprised when he doesn\u2019t join the Resistance.<\/p>\n<p>DJ telegraphs from the beginning that he\u2019s going to betray them if the First Order offers a better deal, but it\u2019s presented as a shocking twist when exactly that happens.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Best: Rose Tico<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Rose-Tico.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Although she\u2019s only depicted briefly, Rose Tico was introduced as a lovable new addition to the roster in <em>The Last Jedi<\/em>. Kelly Marie Tran gave a terrific performance and it was interesting to see an everywoman character join the ranks of the main ensemble.<\/p>\n<p>Then, of course, Rose was reduced to a background character in <em>The Rise of Skywalker<\/em>. J.J. Abrams said that the casting of Tran was <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/star-wars-kelly-marie-tran-jj-abrams-rian-johnson\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the thing he was most grateful for<\/a> from Rian Johnson\u2019s work on <em>The Last Jedi<\/em>, then only featured her for 76 seconds of screen time (seriously) in his two-and-a-half-hour movie.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Worst: Supreme Leader Snoke<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Supreme-Leader-Snoke.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The motion-capture magic of Andy Serkis was wasted on the role of Supreme Leader Snoke, who can only be described as a store-brand Emperor Palpatine. Whereas the original trilogy saved the Emperor\u2019s reveal for the third and final chapter, J.J. Abrams put Snoke on full display in the first sequel movie.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/star-wars-best-selling-games\/\">10 Best-Selling Star Wars Games Ranked (&amp; How Much They Sold)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rian Johnson tried to just do away with the derivative, razor-thin villain in <em>The Last Jedi. <\/em>Unfortunately,\u00a0Abrams came back and created an abundance of plot holes by bringing Palpatine himself back from the dead (somehow) and revealing Snoke to be one of his diabolical creations (somehow) in <em>The Rise of Skywalker<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Best: BB-8<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/BB-8.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Droids have been integral to the <em>Star Wars<\/em> universe since the original 1977 movie focused its entire first act on C-3PO and R2-D2. BB-8 isn\u2019t given a huge role in the sequel trilogy, but it\u2019s always a delight when he\u2019s on-screen, especially when Poe Dameron is scratching his belly like a dog.<\/p>\n<p>The character was brought to life brilliantly by real mechanics as opposed to CGI, with a distinctive voice created by comics Bill Hader and Ben Schwartz.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Worst: Luke Skywalker<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Luke-Skywalker-in-Star-Wars-The-Last-Jedi.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Every member of the original trilogy\u2019s holy trinity was short-changed in the sequel trilogy \u2013 Han was killed off before sharing any more scenes with Luke and Leia flew through space like Peter Pan \u2013 but the most egregious was the treatment of Luke Skywalker.<\/p>\n<p>After being reduced to a MacGuffin in <em>The Force Awakens<\/em>, Luke was recharacterized as a bitter, milk-swilling grump in <em>The Last Jedi<\/em>. In theory, Rian Johnson\u2019s deconstruction of the Jedi myth is sharp and subversive. In execution, it falls flat.
