One of the genre’s many strengths is that it works well as both a single-player experience, exemplified by titles like\u00a0Half-Life<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Bioshock<\/a>, <\/em>as it does a\u00a0multiplayer\u00a0experience,\u00a0shown by the\u00a0Call of Duty<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Battlefield<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>franchises.<\/p>\n

The improved hardware of the Xbox One<\/a>\u00a0allowed developers to create incredibly immersive games<\/a> that accomplished what the FPS genre does best: make the player feel as though they’re in the heart of the action. The Xbox Series X|S<\/a> looks set to revolutionize the FPS landscape once again,\u00a0led by titles like\u00a0Halo Infinite<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Rainbow Six Quarantine<\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0With the ninth generation of consoles starting their first calendar year, it seems fitting to look back upon the best first-person shooters that the Xbox One had to offer.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (86)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

In regards to the main series\u00a0Resident Evil<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>games, it seems that Capcom wants to differentiate the titles into groups of three. The first three games utilized fixed camera angles and implemented numerous puzzles, the next three titles offered players more action-heavy gameplay, and now it seems that the series is set to provide an\u00a0Outlast<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Amnesia<\/a>–<\/em>inspired first-person survival horror experience.<\/p>\n

Resident Evil\u00a0<\/em>certainly doesn’t have the same gun-blazing action<\/a> as some of the other titles on this list, as it instead requires players to use their ammo extremely sparingly and rely on their wits to\u00a0survive.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Titanfall 2 (87)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Released in October 2016,\u00a0Electronic Arts’\u00a0Titanfall 2<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>went under the radar when it was first released, presumably due to EA’s bizarre decision to release it just seven days after their WWI shooter\u00a0Battlefield 1<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson explained the odd decision<\/a> by saying that he felt the games catered to different types of FPS fans. Although the risky strategy didn’t seem to pay off, it isn’t hard to see where he was coming from.\u00a0Titanfall 2<\/em>\u00a0differentiates itself from most other shooters on the market with not just its titans, but its\u00a0extremely fast-paced movement. Word of mouth has been EA’s best marketing tool for the game, as positive feedback from players has ensured that\u00a0Titanfall 2\u00a0<\/em>is still thriving today.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Battlefield 1 (87)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The aforementioned\u00a0Battlefield 1\u00a0<\/em>received the same Metascore as\u00a0Titanfall 2<\/em>, and as previously mentioned, took players back to World War 1<\/a>. EA’s decision to take the series back to the Great War was\u00a0clearly a smart choice, as the game’s trailer became YouTube’s most liked trailer in its history<\/a>, whereas the\u00a0Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>trailer, which hit the site around the same time, become the most disliked.<\/p>\n

Battlefield 1\u00a0<\/em>didn’t disappoint its many new and old fans, providing players with one of the best online experiences\u00a0on Microsoft’s third console.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>DOOM (87)<\/h2>\n

It’s always nice to see a\u00a0DOOM<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>title on an FPS list such as this, as the genre likely wouldn’t be anywhere near the size that it is today without the iconic IP.<\/p>\n

After numerous delays and confusion from fans over the release of\u00a0DOOM 4<\/em>, the project was scrapped, and in its place came\u00a0DOOM\u00a0<\/em>(2016), a soft reboot of the franchise.\u00a0The game’s developer id Software didn’t try to reinvent the wheel and opted to keep the action-heavy gameplay that the series is known for.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Destiny 2 (87)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Originally released in 2017,\u00a0Destiny 2<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is a free-to-play multiplayer shooter developed by\u00a0Halo<\/em>‘s\u00a0<\/em>creator Bungie.<\/p>\n

Destiny 2\u00a0<\/em>won numerous awards upon release including Best PC Game from the Game Critic Awards<\/a>\u00a0and Best Multiplayer Game from Gamescom 2017<\/a>. Bungie’s first-person shooter is still picking up awards years after its release, including The Game Awards’ Best Ongoing Game award in 2019<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0Destiny 2\u00a0<\/em>was nominated for the same award in 2020, though it lost out to Hello Games’\u00a0<\/a>No Man’s Sky<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus (88)<\/h2>\n

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is the first of four games in a row that received a Metascore of 88, technically making Bethesda’s\u00a0<\/em>game joint-second on this list.<\/p>\n

Developed by MachineGames,\u00a0Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus\u00a0<\/em>is one of the most critically acclaimed entries into the\u00a0Wolfenstein\u00a0<\/em>franchise that began all the way back in 1981. The game was praised for its weapon variety<\/a> and charismatic cast of characters but criticized for its underwhelming runtime.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Apex Legends (88)<\/h2>\n

Released in 2019 by the team of Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts, Apex Legends<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is one of the many entries into the recently popularized battle royale genre<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The game hit the ground running upon release, amassing an incredible one million unique players in just 8 hours of its release<\/a>.\u00a0Apex Legends\u00a0<\/em>certainly wasn’t just a one-day wonder though, as it reached 70 million players in October 2019<\/a>, earning an eye-watering $45 million in the autumn month alone.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Fallout 4 (88)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The long-awaited sequel to\u00a0Fallout 3<\/em><\/a>, Bethesda’s\u00a0Fallout 4<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>released in 2015 to a mixed response from fans and critics. Professional reviewers enjoyed the game, generally speaking, though many fans were unhappy with the highly anticipated game;\u00a0exemplified by its 6.5 user score on Metacritic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Criticisms from fans were predominantly aimed at the game’s illusion of choice, with many of the seemingly different speech options offering the same result. This was especially disappointing as\u00a0Fallout: New Vegas<\/em><\/a>, released prior to\u00a0Fallout 4<\/em>, offered more freedom of choice<\/a>. Still, there are many things to love about\u00a0Fallout 4,\u00a0<\/em>particularly its huge open world that is filled with side quests and lore.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>DOOM Eternal (88)<\/h2>\n

The success of the aforementioned\u00a0DOOM\u00a0<\/em>(2016) convinced Bethesda to give id Software the thumbs up to make a sequel. Much like its predecessor,\u00a0DOOM Eternal<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>kept its gameplay centered around the simplistic action fun that the series is known for, rather than trying to implement multiple ambitious and complicated mechanics as some sequels do.\u00a0DOOM Eternal\u00a0<\/em>did make a slight change from its predecessors though, with its increased focus on storytelling that disappointed some\u00a0fans and critics.<\/p>\n

Despite the\u00a0narrative’s mixed reception, DOOM Eternal\u00a0<\/em>received numerous nominations and awards, including\u00a0the Game Critics Awards’ accolades of Best PC Game and Best Action Game<\/a>.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Overwatch (91)<\/h2>\n

The highest-rated first-person shooter on the Xbox One comes in the form of a multiplayer shooter developed by Blizzard Entertainment. Assigned into two teams of six, players are given a wide selection of heroes to choose from who offer vastly different playstyles, ensuring that each game has a unique balance.<\/p>\n

The game exemplifies the old adage of simple to play impossible to master, resulting in an extremely addictive product.\u00a0Overwatch<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was showered with awards upon release, including Game of the Year awards from The Game Awards<\/a>, the D.I.C.E. Awards<\/a>, and the\u00a0Game Developers Choice Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n
