Aside from their successful\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/assassins-creed\/\">Assassin&#8217;s Creed<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/far-cry\/\">Far Cry<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>series,\u00a0<em>Ghost Recon\u00a0<\/em>is up there with those two. The series incorporates elements from other genres such as RTS, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-combat-systems-open-world-rpg\">RPG<\/a>, Arcade, and recently, open-world into their otherwise tactical shooters to create experimental wonders.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-ubisoft-games-worst-according-metacritic\/\">5 Best Ubisoft Games (&amp; 5 Worst), According To Metacritic<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The franchise&#8217;s games are known to be grueling methodical shooters that still accommodate gamers&#8217; desire for fast-paced action. However, the constantly changing formula of the franchise results in hit-or-miss success on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Metacritic<\/a> with every installment.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Updated January 13th, 2021, by Jack Pursey:<\/em><\/strong> When the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/playstation-2-development-stories\/\">PlayStation 2 was released in the year 2000<\/a>, the improved hardware saw the gaming industry ditch the platforming mascots that had been dominating the genre for many years in favor of realistic action-games. One thing that Ubisoft can&#8217;t be criticized for is its shrewd adaptability, which was on full display as they\u00a0left\u00a0their limbless hero\u00a0<em>Rayman\u00a0<\/em>behind\u00a0in favor of\u00a0<em>Ghost Recon,\u00a0<\/em><em>Splinter Cell,\u00a0<\/em>and the already established\u00a0<em>Rainbow Six\u00a0<\/em>series&#8217;. The\u00a0<em>Ghost Recon\u00a0<\/em>franchise has gone on to be a cornerstone of the action genre, so we have decided to open this list up to include every main series release in recognition of this.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">15 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon (2010) &#8211; 46<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ghost-recon-wii.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Just because\u00a0<em>Tom Clancy<\/em><em>&#8216;s Ghost Recon\u00a0<\/em>has been a cornerstone of the action genre, doesn&#8217;t mean that the franchise hasn&#8217;t thrown up a few disasters along the way.<\/p>\n<p><em>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon<\/em> (2010) was released on the Nintendo Wii and attempted to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/motion-controllers-new-games-should-use-it\/\">utilize the Wii&#8217;s motion controls<\/a> to provide the most immersive\u00a0<em>Ghost Recon\u00a0<\/em>game yet. To be fair to Next Level Games, the motion controls were solid; but the game was let down by its repetitive gameplay and unintelligent A.I.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">14 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon: Predator &#8211; 54<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ghost-recon-predator.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Released the same year as\u00a0the aforementioned\u00a0Nintendo Wii game,\u00a0<em>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon: Predator\u00a0<\/em>hit stores in October exclusively on the PSP. The game&#8217;s key selling point was that it allowed players to switch between any of the squad&#8217;s three soldiers.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-third-person-adventure-games\/\">15 Best Third-Person Adventure Games Of All Time, Ranked<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Similar to the Wii game,\u00a0<em>Ghost Recon: Predator\u00a0<\/em>suffers from being too one-dimensional, with little emphasis on what makes the series so unique; its tactical and methodical gameplay. Another similarity is the lackluster A.I. which is more than enough of a reason for even the most\u00a0die-hard\u00a0<em>Ghost Recon <\/em>fan to\u00a0skip this entry.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">13 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon: Breakpoint &#8211; 58<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Ghost-Recon-Breakpoint-Nomad-Carrying-A-Body.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/ghost-recon-breakpoint\/\"><em>Ghost Recon Breakpoint<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is the latest game in the\u00a0<em>Ghost Recon<\/em>\u00a0franchise. Following the events of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/ghost-recon-wildlands\/\">Wildlands<\/a>, <\/em>the story focuses on callsign Nomad. Together with what&#8217;s left of his team, he aims to take out opportunist Cole D. Walker&#8211; a former ghost who overrode Auroa&#8217;s advanced technology for his own abuses.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/longest-open-world-rpgs\/\">open-world<\/a> tactical shooter elements, the game also has RPG mechanics with different classes to choose from. Also, it has an Immersive Mode option that removes the hud and increases realism, bringing this game back to its tactical roots. Though it is fun, the direction the game wants to go to seems unclear. This earns it a <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/lowest-rated-role-playng-games-metacritic\/\">low Metascore<\/a>\u00a0and a user score of only 2.5.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">12 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon: Wildlands &#8211; 69<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Ghost-Recon-Wildlands-Armored-Buggy.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Ghost Recon\u00a0Wildlands<\/em>\u00a0is the first <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/open-world-games-biggest-maps\/\">open-world<\/a> game in the\u00a0franchise. This allows for various non-linear approaches to the story, and side content such as taking out convoys and enemy compounds.\u00a0The game\u00a0follows\u00a0Nomad and his team of ghosts as they are deployed into Bolivia to dismantle the global-scale cocaine production, and to liberate the people.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ghost-recon-wildlands-vehicles-make-game-easier\/\">Ghost Recon: Wildlands: 10 Vehicles That Make The Game Easier<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The vast world, together with the tactical nature of the game, gives players heightened freedom that adds to the ghost experience. Given its Metascore with a user score of 6.3, it&#8217;s a huge leap from the previous entry on this list.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">11 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm &#8211; 70<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/jungle-storm.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Released in 2004 on the PlayStation 2,\u00a0<em>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon: Jungle Storm\u00a0<\/em>is an expansion of the original\u00a0<em>Ghost Recon. <\/em>The game is best remembered for\u00a0offering online multiplayer for the first time in the series.\u00a0<i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><em>Jungle Storm<\/em>&#8216;s lackluster score predominantly comes from the fact that it was the final of three expansions to the game, and players were growing tired of waiting for <em>Ghost Recon 2<\/em>. Despite making only minimal changes from the other expansions, the\u00a0game provided an enjoyable experience that will have greatly appealed to die-hard fans of the series.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon Phantoms &#8211; 70<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Ghost-Recon-Phantoms-Wallpaper.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Ghost Recon Phantoms<\/em>\u00a0is a fast-paced <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/multiplayer-video-games-2019-best-top\/\">multiplayer game<\/a> with some tactical elements. Similar to today&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/rainbow-six\/\"><em>Rainbow Six: Siege<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0the game features tons of variability with high-tech equipment and abilities in the game. From shields to intel grenades, to optic camo, this game has enough tools to create different sorts of strategies and plays.<\/p>\n<p>There are three classes to choose from: assault, recon, and support, each with its own tools and usability. As fun and promising as the game is,\u00a0Ubisoft, unfortunately, shut down game servers due to a steady decline in users. The user score for this game is 6.4.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier &#8211; 71<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Ghost-Recon-Future-Soldier.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/ghost-recon-future-soldier\/\"><em>Ghost Recon: Future Soldier<\/em><\/a>\u00a0takes place in\u00a02024 where military gear has shown significant improvements. The plot follows the squad under the callsign\u00a0&#8216;Hunter&#8217; through a series of international missions to dismantle the system from within.\u00a0<em>Future Soldier<\/em>\u00a0features a third-person cover-to-cover mechanic for a tactical approach to engagements.<\/p>\n<p>The game also gives the players futuristic tools such as intel grenades to tag enemies behind cover. The user score for\u00a0Future Soldier\u00a0however is just 5.1. Lower than some of the previous entries on this list.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars &#8211; 77<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/shadow-wars.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars\u00a0<\/em>released on the Nintendo 3DS\u00a0 in 2011 and compensated for the handheld console&#8217;s limited hardware by offering players a complete change of genre from the norm.<\/p>\n<p>The change of genre was an ambitious but welcome choice, as the\u00a0turn-based tactics game provided a solid <em>XCOM<\/em>-like experience.\u00a0<em>Shadow Wars\u00a0<\/em>certainly didn&#8217;t reach the heights of the\u00a0<em>XCOM\u00a0<\/em>franchise&#8217;s\u00a0most critically acclaimed entries,\u00a0but it did provide an enjoyable campaign with\u00a0decent tactical gameplay that will appeal to fans of both the <em>Ghost Recon\u00a0<\/em>series and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/turn-based-games-worst-according-metacritic\/\">turn-based tactics genre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon &#8211; 80<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Ghost-Recon-Gameplay-Screenshot.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Developed in 2001, <em>Tom Clancy\u2019s Ghost Recon <\/em>is the first <em>Ghost Recon <\/em>game ever made. This game is the most tactically unforgiving out of all the games in the franchise. A six-man squadron can be built from four available classes to choose from. Players have the ability to command their <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ghost-recon-breakpoint-ai-teammates-improvements\">AI companions<\/a> by tagging the path they should take.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/arma-3-mods-best\/\">Arma 3: The 10 Best Mods For The Game<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>They are also given the function to alternate between who to control; giving them the role of both an on-the-ground soldier and a commander.<em> Ghost Recon<\/em> incorporates RTS elements to a tactical shooter to create one solid formula that will soon be the heart of what the franchise is. That being said, the game has an admirable user score of 7.6.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon 2 &#8211; 80<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Ghost-Recon-2-Gameplay-Screenshot-Prone-Soldier.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Ghost Recon 2 <\/em>is a console exclusive game that improves from the previous <em>Ghost Recon. <\/em>Having\u00a0modified in some areas, it didn\u2019t stray too far from its core mechanics. Releasing three years after the first game, this game\u00a0upgraded\u00a0its graphics, and also humanized the characters more through <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/overwatch-hilarious-character-interactions\/\">dialogue interactions<\/a> and cutscenes.<\/p>\n<p>There are also some gameplay changes such as the players&#8217; control being limited only to squadron leader Scott Mitchell; as opposed to the previous game allowing the player to alternately take control of multiple units. The players, however, may still command their squadron as they please. These improvements resulted in a higher User Score of 8.7.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon: Island Thunder &#8211; 82<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Ghost-Recon-Island-Thunder-Cutscene-Screenshot-Helicopter.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The <em>Island Thunder <\/em>expansion of <em>Ghost Recon\u00a0<\/em>features a single-player <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dnd-best-campaigns-all-time\/\">campaign<\/a> taking place in Cuba after the death of Fidel Castro. When democracy is threatened by the communist parties with violence, it\u2019s up to the special ops ghosts to dismantle their system and restore freedom to the people.<\/p>\n<p>The expansion also features jungle maps that encourage players to approach the foliage-ridden environment with caution. Despite its decent Metascore, <em>Island Thunder <\/em>only has a User Score of 6.7. A bit higher than that of <em>Wildlands.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon: Desert Siege &#8211; 82<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/desert-siege.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Another expansion of the original\u00a0<em>Ghost Recon<\/em>, Red Strom Entertainment&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon: Desert Siege\u00a0<\/em>takes players to East Africa, and tasks a team of\u00a0U.S. Army Green Berets with intervening in a war between\u00a0Ethiopia and\u00a0Eritrea.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast to the aforementioned\u00a0<em>Jungle Storm,\u00a0<\/em>which was likely docked points for being an unwanted third expansion,\u00a0<em>Desert Siege<\/em>&#8216;s Metascore is helped by it being the first expansion, and consequently still feeling fresh.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike &#8211; 84<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Ghost-Recon-2-Summit-Strike-Gameplay-Screenshot.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Released in 2005, <em>Summit Strike <\/em>is a <em>Ghost Recon 2 <\/em>expansion that introduces new multiplayer modes, improved mechanics, and an additional story mode. This deepens the tactical elements of the game. The expansion features snowy environments, plus the option to re-do the missions in solo mode. This game has a solid User Score of 7.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 &#8211; 86<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Ghost-Recon-Advanced-Warfighter-2-Gameplay-Screenshot.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Developed in 2007, <em>Advanced Warfighter 2 <\/em>takes place in Mexico. A year after the events of <em>Advanced Warfighter.<\/em> Players take control of ghost leader Scott Mitchell as he leads his team through various missions. Players can see the bodycam feed of their squadmates, allowing for more effective reconnaissance.<\/p>\n<p>They also have control of advanced military equipment such as a UAV that they can use to gather intel on enemy locations. On top of that, the command system is more <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-combat-systems-open-world-action-games-ranked\/\">fluently integrated with combat<\/a>. Though this Xbox version of the game has an impressive Metascore with a User Rating of 7.7, the PC version is only rated 76. As for the PS3 version, 84.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Tom Clancy&#8217;s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter &#8211; 90<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Tom-Clancys-Ghost-Recon-Advanced-Warfighter-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Developed in 2006, the Xbox version of <em>Advanced Warfighter <\/em>is the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-games-of-2020-top-rated\/\">highest Metascore<\/a> a <em>Ghost Recon <\/em>game has achieved. The game takes place after the events of <em>Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike. <\/em>Scott Mitchell and his band of ghosts engage in a series of missions to protect and preserve the alliance of the US and Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Players once again take control of Scott as they lead their team by giving out orders. The integrated RTS elements of <em>Advanced Warfighter <\/em>together with its tactical gameplay encourages players to be methodical with their approach.
