It was confirmation that Disney&#8217;s exclusivity contract with Electronic Arts would be ending, leading to more <em>Star Wars<\/em> games year to year. There was just one lingering question: What would happen to Massive&#8217;s previously announced <strong><em>Avatar<\/em><\/strong> game? It turns out that nothing would happen, as both <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/avatar\/\"><em>Avatar<\/em><\/a> and <em>Star Wars<\/em> games remain in development.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the announcement of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ubisoft-open-world-star-wars-game\/\">Ubisoft&#8217;s in-development <em>Star Wars<\/em> game<\/a>, the publisher released an interview with Massive&#8217;s managing director David Polfeldt. Polfeldt was asked specifically about Massive taking on the development of two different games from two different major franchises. While Polfeldt doesn&#8217;t directly address the state of the <em>Avatar<\/em> project&#8217;s ongoing development, he does acknowledge that Massive continues to work on <em>Avatar<\/em> alongside <em>Star Wars<\/em> as an equal focus.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/avatar-2-james-cameron-set-photos-december-2020\/\">Avatar 2: James Cameron Releases Final Set Photos of 2020<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>No details were provided regarding how Massive plans to tackle two major projects at one time. Its released two games in the past 6 years, those being <em>Tom Clancy&#8217;s The Division<\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/division-2-rebalancing-update-soon\/\">its sequel <em>The Division 2<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 Though to call it a one-project studio wouldn&#8217;t be accurate, seeing as it supported<em> The Division<\/em> via post-launch content while also working on <em>The Division 2<\/em>. It&#8217;s possible that this strategy has led to do different development teams within the company, or that Ubisoft is outsourcing work to other internal studios.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eltRKvqGsTY\" frameborder=\"0\" allowTransparency=\"true\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden;width:1280;height:720;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Regardless of how the two games are being developed at Massive, neither project is likely to be coming any time soon. The <em>Star Wars<\/em> project was only confirmed yesterday and is likely years away from coming to fruition. As for the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/avatar-game-development-2020\/\"><em>Avatar<\/em> project<\/a>, the last news that was shared about it confirmed that development had been delayed and that a 2022 launch would be the earliest it would arrive.<\/p>\n<p>Given the relatively delayed release windows for each game, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-division-stance-on-hackers-exploiters\/\">Massive<\/a> will have plenty of time to share details regarding the studio&#8217;s growth and arrangement so that it can support two different games&#8217; development. Nevermind that <em>The Division 2<\/em> remains actively supported by the studio as well. Plus, it&#8217;s not just that Massive is working on two games that&#8217;s interesting, but that it&#8217;s working on two very large games based on two very popular IPs.<\/p>\n<p>Massive&#8217;s <em>Avatar<\/em> project was originally announced in 2017, developed in partnership with James Cameron&#8217;s Lightstorm Entertainment. It, like the <em>Star Wars<\/em> project, is being made in Massive&#8217;s Snowdrop engine.
