Crystal Dynamics has shared that its Marvel\u2019s Avengers<\/em><\/strong> DLC will bring a new villain alongside every hero released post-launch, adding some variety to the game\u2019s Villain Sector missions. With Hawkeye\u2019s upcoming DLC<\/a> bringing Maestro, players have a good idea of what to expect from the game\u2019s upcoming villains. However, Crystal Dynamics has remained tight-lipped as to who will be coming to the game alongside Spider-Man, and there are plenty of options on the table for potential adversaries.<\/p>\n

With Spider-Man having one of the best rogues gallery in comics, several villains could come to Marvel\u2019s Avengers<\/em><\/a>. With the only prerequisite being that they function as a big enough threat to warrant the team\u2019s attention, Crystal Dynamics still has plenty of freedom with its upcoming Spider-Man story. That said, with Crystal Dynamics likely trying to differentiate from what Insomniac\u2019s Spidey universe has covered thus far, the long list of potential Spider-Man villain appearances becomes a good bit shorter.<\/p>\n

Only referenced in Marvel\u2019s Spider-Man<\/em> and not seen in Spider-Man: Miles Morales<\/em>, Mysterio would be an excellent villain to debut in Marvel\u2019s Avengers<\/em>. While he was recently used in 2019\u2019s Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em><\/a>, the special effects wizard Quentin Beck is too good of a fit for a video game to pass up. With the ability to warp the area around him and fool both Spider-Man and The Avengers with illusions, the potential for a great boss fight with the fishbowl-wearing magician is clear, and his attacks could offer far more variety than any enemy seen in the game thus far.<\/p>\n

In the story portion of Spider-Man\u2019s Marvel\u2019s Avengers<\/em> DLC<\/a>, a similar scenario to Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em> can play out. Using his spider sense to take Mysterio down would likely be just as cool in-game as it was in a film, and it would give Spider-Man a huge advantage over the villain when used in villain sectors. Phases of the fight could see Mysterio making clones of other Avengers, growing to the size of a skyscraper, and using the environment as a weapon. A similar story to Daredevil\u2019s excellent Guardian Devil<\/em> arc could play out as well, painting Mysterio as a tragic character looking to have one last performance before his death at the hands of cancer.<\/p>\n

Despite being one of Spider-Man\u2019s greatest adversaries, Green Goblin has been less prevalent in media over recent years. With the original Spider-Man<\/em> films placing Norman Osborn in a Power-Rangers<\/em>-like suit and The Amazing Spider-Man<\/em>\u00a0movies giving the antagonist an even worse design, Green Goblin has been avoided in the recent MCU films as a response. Further, with the version of Norman Osborn seen in Marvel\u2019s Spider-Man<\/em><\/a> not being very physically imposing, it seems unlikely that he will be picking up his pumpkin bombs in the highly anticipated sequel. As such, Crystal Dynamics has the chance to remind players of how great of a villain Green Goblin is, doing Gwen Stacy\u2019s killer justice in Marvel\u2019s Avengers<\/em> Spider-Man DLC.<\/p>\n

With Crystal Dynamics previously saying that they want to stay away from things that were done in the movies, explaining\u00a0its use of AIM in Marvel\u2019s Avengers<\/em>, it is unlikely that any iconic Green Goblin stories will be retold. Instead, a fully original narrative could take place during Spider-Man\u2019s DLC, and the story could show Osborn as a proper threat to the webslinger. Further, Goblin\u2019s glider could make him an aerial threat in a boss fight, something that would be a change from ground-based battles like Abomination and Taskmaster. A less traditional version of Green Goblin could also be used, such as the massive creature seen in the Ultimate comics and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse<\/em><\/a>. Regardless of the form he takes, though, a proper return of Green Goblin is long overdue.<\/p>\n

Spider-Man\u2019s battles with Flint Marko are always fun, if not predictable. The usual scenario is Sandman throwing Spidey around for a bit before the webslinger lures him to water, beating him down once he is hardened. While this common method of victory has made Sandman an adversary on the level of Electro<\/a>, as opposed to a more intimidating presence such as Doctor Octopus or Venom, there have been a few moments in the comics where the character has put up more of a fight. While Sandman is unlikely to ever be the main villain of a Spider-Man<\/em> game or movie, he is perfect as a minor villain, and his weakness is always a natural fit for a boss battle.<\/p>\n

Bringing him d could take some teamwork, as players may need to burst pipes of water to place the shapeshifting character in a weakened state. Getting in a few hits before rinsing and repeating, a different kind of boss fight for Marvel\u2019s Avengers<\/em> can be added. Requiring stages of platforming and attack dodging as opposed to the tried-and-true \u201chit it until it dies\u201d method seen in the Taskmaster and Abomination fights, Sandman\u2019s Villain Sector could be a blast to play through. While he could be appearing alongside The Lizard and other minor villains in the\u00a0Marvel\u2019s Spider-Man<\/em>\u00a0sequel<\/a>, Crystal Dynamics could make good use of the character in its Avengers universe.<\/p>\n

Finally, there is Spider-Man\u2019s most terrifying adversary, Carnage. Set to be an antagonist in the upcoming film Venom: Let There Be Carnage<\/em><\/a>, casual Marvel fans could be introduced to the villain early via Marvel\u2019s Avengers<\/em>. Another Symbiote wearer, Cletus Kasady, is pure evil, wreaking havoc as a serial killer before the Carnage Symbiote attached. From that point on, Kasady became able to kill with ease, using his many newfound abilities to pick off civilians at random. One of the most dangerous threats Spidey has had to face due to his cruelty and unpredictable nature, Carnage is an excellent fit for Marvel\u2019s Avengers<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The perfect character for a one-off DLC story due to his one-dimensional nature, Carnage could be picking off people in New York before Spider-Man begins to take notice. Tracking the bodies to Carnage, an excellent boss fight can break out that pushes Spidey to his limit. Not only would the powers provided by the Symbiote make Carnage a threat worthy of The Avengers\u2019 attention, but Crystal Dynamics could use Carnage\u2019s ability to zombify civilians and soldiers to keep all players busy in his Villain Sector. With Insomniac\u2019s focus likely being on Venom<\/a>, Carnage is a perfect fit for the Spider-Man DLC and a Marvel\u2019s Avengers<\/em> boss fight.<\/p>\n

Marvel’s Avengers<\/em><\/strong> is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions currently in development.<\/p>\n
