Last month, fans finally got the newest fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/em> <\/strong>with the release of Sephiroth, the main antagonist from Final Fantasy 7 Remake<\/em><\/a>. The character’s reveal was a surprise for many, as most gamers weren’t expecting a second character from the Final Fantasy<\/em> franchise. But while many were quite happy with the character’s inclusion, others were disappointed for a few reasons. Essentially, some may see him as confirmation of other Square Enix characters that had been highly requested for a very long time by fans.<\/p>\n

Given the fact that most third parties haven’t had more than one single fighter make their way onto Smash<\/em> in the newest installment, Square’s inclusion of another new Final Fantasy<\/em> character<\/a> makes it all the less likely for any of the company’s other highly requested fighters to join the fight.<\/p>\n

Geno has been requested for Super Smash Bros.<\/em><\/a> for the better part of the last decade now, with fans first clamoring for his inclusion before Super <\/em>Smash Bros. for Wii U<\/em> released. Geno appeared originally in in the Super Nintendo game Super Mario RPG\u00a0<\/em>but\u00a0<\/em>is technically a Square Enix character despite appearing in a Mario<\/em> game. Fans have wanted the character’s inclusion in Nintendo’s fighter because of his original design, excellent move set potential, and the fact that he would be representing one of the Super Nintendo’s most beloved RPG titles, which has yet to be represented in any sort of way.<\/p>\n

Many fans became hyped over the potential of Geno appearing as a DLC fighter first after the character failed to appear as a Mii Fight costume in Ultimate<\/em> (he ways originally a costume in Smash<\/em>‘s Wii U installment), and then even moreso after several rumors went around stating that Geno would become his own playable fighter. Of course, with the reveal of Sephiroth as a playable fighter, Square Enix also revealed the return of Geno’s Mii Fighter costume<\/a>. The return of Geno’s costume pretty much deconfirms him as a fighter, and Sephiroth really feels like the final nail in that coffin.<\/p>\n

Though the series has been best known for appearing on PlayStation’s home consoles, the Kingdom Hearts <\/em>franchise has a long history of appearing on Nintendo’s various handheld systems, with most of the game’s spin-offs appearing on each respective handheld. Because of this, many Nintendo fans have anticipated the series protagonist Sora to appear as a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/em><\/a>, with him being one of the most highly requested characters in recent polls.<\/p>\n

It doesn’t look terribly likely for Sora, however, since Sephiroth was revealed. A third character from the company seems a bit unlikely, and it’s possible that Sora’s close ties with Disney may have something to do with his exclusion. It does seem hard for the character to appear without his trusty sidekicks Donald and Goofy, and their likenesses might be difficult to get\u00a0approved by the House of Mouse. One could hope that this might change sometime in the future though, as it would be pretty awesome to see a Disney character fight alongside the likes of Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog.<\/p>\n

Chrono is another character that has been pretty highly requested by many Smash<\/em> players. Originally appearing in Chrono Trigger<\/a>,<\/em> a Super Nintendo title which many gamers consider one of the best RPGs from its era, Chrono would make for another\u00a0solid entry in the Smash<\/em> series. There’s a distinct lack of RPG characters in Smash<\/em> from franchises that aren’t named Fire Emblem<\/em>, so seeing some different and unique fighters would really help flesh out the roster even further. Joker and Hero have helped diversify the RPG fighting roster, but Chrono would help further this even more.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Chrono doesn’t seem terribly likely, simply because the character just isn’t relevant. Like Geno, Chrono hasn’t appeared in a new game in years and likely won’t appear again any time soon. Relevancy isn’t everything, of course, as the additions of both Banjo and Kazooie<\/a> and King K. Rool have proven. But Chrono also doesn’t really have as big of a fanbase as those respective characters, so he feels less relevant as a result.<\/p>\n

All three of these characters would make for perfect fits for Smash<\/em>, but unfortunately Sephiroth’s inclusion as a fighter all but deconfirms them. But nothing should ever be completely ruled out, as\u00a0Smash<\/em> is notorious for doing the unexpected. With Sephiroth now added to the roster, there are now two more fighters that have yet to be revealed for Fighters Pass Vol 2.<\/p>\n
