What if Peggy Carter took the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers? What if Star-Lord was revealed to be T\u2019Challa? What if Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben Hadn’t Died? These are the storylines that could be explored in Marvel\u2019s upcoming series <\/span>Wha<\/i><\/b>t If…<\/strong><\/em>?<\/strong><\/em> expected to premiere on Disney Plus mid-2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What If..?<\/span><\/i>\u00a0is a television series based on a comic book series of the same name and is expected to span over 10 episodes. It was announced in April 2019, it will launch as part of Phase Four<\/a> of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will be the studio\u2019s first animated series. Many already-established Marvel actors will be reprising the roles of their characters such as Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., and Hayley Atwell (Captain America<\/em>\u2019s Peggy Carter). \u00a0It is also rumored to be Chadwick Boseman\u2019s last performance as the Black Panther<\/a>. It\u00a0<\/span>has been revealed that he recorded \u201cnumerous episodes\u201d for the series before\u00a0he tragically passed away.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trollhunters<\/span><\/i> writer A.C. Bradley serves as the creator and head writer of the show and Bryan Andrews, the storyboard artist for Sky High<\/em> and 12 movies in the MCU, will serve as the director. The first episode is confirmed to feature Atwell\u2019s Peggy Carter taking the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers and becoming Captain Britain. Chris Evans, currently occupied with tons of new projects<\/a>, hasn\u2019t been confirmed to reprise his role as Captain America in the premiering episode nor in the one that features Captain America as a zombie. The series will bring back characters like Dominic Cooper\u2019s Howard Stark who played the character in <\/span>Captain America: The First Avenger<\/span><\/i> and the television series <\/span>Agent Carter<\/span><\/i>, as well as Michael Douglas\u2019 Hank Pym, reprising his character from the <\/span>Ant-Man<\/span><\/i> movies. Other characters\u00a0from Marvel\u2019s television and Netflix shows may also pop in for an episode or two.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>What If…?<\/span><\/i> comic book series debuted in the late-70s and spans over 13 volumes. It allows writers to create their own universes, creating a new narrative for some of the world’s most renowned, admired characters. Fans can expect this television series to explore unconventional and weird storylines, much like\u00a0<\/a><\/span>WandaVision<\/span><\/i><\/a>. With these two new shows, it is clear that Marvel is working hard to break free from their typical superhero stories and move into more creative realms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Actor Jeffrey Wright will be making his Marvel debut in the series, playing the pivotal character Uatu the Watcher. His character is the overseer of the multiverse and in the comics, he serves as the narrator of the stories as he moves from one to the next. Traditionally, the comic\u00a0will open with Uatu describing a canonical moment in the series before pausing the story and announcing the \u201cWhat if?\u201d factor. However, the comics phased out the character after 76 issues under the guise of wanting to focus more on the divergent plots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While\u00a0many are excited about the new series, other fans have criticized the series for picking the safest storylines. It is hard to get lost in the nostalgia of the original comic book series\u2019 quirkiness and weirdness when the television series is afraid of getting weird. Though, this is all speculation as the series hasn\u2019t released an episode guide with the titles of the \u201cWhat if\u201d choices, beyond Peggy Carter\u2019s. The trailer alludes to the\u00a0MCU’s many iconic scenes<\/a>, such as\u00a0a shot of Tony Stark eating a donut (taking the audience back to Iron Man 2<\/em>)\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Doctor Strange seemingly\u00a0battling himself, and tons of pre-serum scrawny Steve Rogers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
