Ever since\u00a0Super Mario Kart<\/em> released in 1992 for the SNES,\u00a0the\u00a0Mario Kart<\/strong><\/em> series has become\u00a0one of Nintendo’s biggest franchises ever, capitalizing off of the popularity of its famous plumber. And now,\u00a0Mario Kart 8 Deluxe<\/em> on the Nintendo Switch continues to be one of the system’s best-selling games, beating its own annual sales records<\/a> time and time again.\u00a0Over the years, with 8 mainline iterations, a brand new mixed reality game, a mobile game, and even a series of arcade games,\u00a0the series\u00a0has amassed an incredible wealth of playable characters, race tracks, vehicles, different game modes, and more.<\/p>\n

After nearly 30 years of shaping\u00a0the kart-racing genre, a series as lucrative as\u00a0Mario Kart<\/em><\/a> seems\u00a0due for a definitive game serving as a celebration of the series, much the way\u00a0Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/em> acts as the\u00a0definitive Smash<\/em> game. And from Double Dash<\/em>‘s buddy racing system to Mario Kart 7<\/i>‘s\u00a0additions of gliders, underwater driving, and kart customization (and more), the series is still looking to innovate whenever\u00a0possible. However, taking a breather from introducing new mechanics to focus on fan-favorite characters, courses, and vehicles\u00a0can help serve as a reminder of everything that has made\u00a0Mario Kart<\/i>\u00a0great in the first place.<\/p>\n

With over 50 different\u00a0characters, over 115\u00a0courses, and a countless selection of vehicles across all mainline\u00a0Mario Kart<\/em> games, the series has made incredible use of nearly\u00a0all that the\u00a0Super Mario<\/em>\u00a0franchise has to offer. For returning characters, it goes without saying that any definitive\u00a0game should include all past characters from the Mario Kart<\/em> series.<\/a> After all, thanks to\u00a0Mario Kart 8 Deluxe<\/em>‘s sizable roster, the game only excluded around 10 characters from past mainline\u00a0titles, so the return of fan favorites\u00a0like\u00a0Bowser Jr., Diddy Kong, and Petey Piranha would be welcome additions.<\/p>\n

As for returning tracks, it would be quite a feat to implement every track from past\u00a0Mario Kart<\/em> games as they are a lot more involved\u00a0when compared to stages from\u00a0Super Smash Bros.<\/em> so bumping up\u00a0Mario Kart 8 Deluxe<\/em>‘s 48 tracks to around 60 or so seems more reasonable, leaving room for some new tracks while also giving players the chance \u00a0to return to some fan favorites.<\/p>\n

The kart-racing series’ venture into mobile gaming with\u00a0Mario Kart Tour<\/em> has done a great job at bringing back older\u00a0characters, karts, and tracks, but\u00a0since the gameplay in\u00a0Mario Kart Tour<\/em> is rather simple, the game’s tricked out “T” and reversed “R” courses should remain in the mobile realm. And although Mario Kart 8 Deluxe<\/em> includes some costumed characters like Tanooki Mario and Cat Peach,\u00a0Mario Kart Tour<\/em>‘s\u00a0limited-time costumed characters<\/a> should remain a mainstay in the mobile game\u00a0in order to promote its gacha format, while a new mainline Mario Kart<\/i>\u00a0game should focus on introducing entirely new characters to the series.<\/p>\n

On the Wii U,\u00a0Mario Kart 8<\/em>‘s venture into paid DLC was welcomed by many with open arms, adding 4 new cups, returning and new characters, and new vehicles as well, and while many thought that the game would receive some more DLC, Mario Kart 8<\/em>\u00a0didn’t receive any more new content\u00a0until its deluxe port on the Nintendo Switch. However, although\u00a0Mario Kart 8<\/i>‘s\u00a0DLC format worked fine for the game\u00a0in the past, something akin to\u00a0Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/em>‘s challenger packs<\/a> may help drive excitement and hype for the game the same way they do for\u00a0Smash<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Much like\u00a0Ultimate<\/em>‘s challenger packs, racer packs for the next\u00a0Mario Kart<\/em> game could follow suit by simply including one new racer, one new track, and one new vehicle. This could give the series the chance to introduce both fan favorite\u00a0Mario<\/em>\u00a0characters like Kamek and Plessie, and even\u00a0other Nintendo all-stars like Samus, Fox, or\u00a0Captain Falcon. Since the series recently dipped its toes in the realm of guest characters with the addition of\u00a0Link<\/em>,\u00a0Inklings<\/em>,\u00a0Villager<\/em>, and\u00a0Isabelle<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Mario Kart 8 Deluxe<\/em>, guest characters seem more likely than ever.<\/p>\n

With the incredible sales of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe<\/em>\u00a0and the recent release of Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit<\/em>,<\/a> a new entry in the series may seem rather unlikely, but despite this, rumors about the next\u00a0Mario Kart<\/em>\u00a0game always seem to be floating around.\u00a0It also may be worth noting that the series is coming up on its 30th anniversary soon, and while Nintendo has their hands full with anniversaries as of late,\u00a0Mario Kart<\/em> fans may be in for some surprises in the next year or so.<\/p>\n
