Despite being the gaming industry’s 2nd most popular genre in 2020<\/a>, the range of sports games released each year is surprisingly slim. As anyone familiar with the genre will know, this is largely due to licensed titles like\u00a02K’s NBA and EA’s FIFA<\/a>\u00a0dominating the market.<\/p>\n

The dominance of licensed sports games may be called into question shortly, as David Beckham’s reported \u00a340 million earnings<\/a> for appearing as an icon in\u00a0three FIFA titles has caused a stir amongst soccer’s biggest stars. Mino Riola, one of the sport’s most recognizable agents, has claimed that around 300 players may take legal action against EA over their likeness<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If the players were successful in their lawsuit, it would likely have huge ramifications for the entire sports genre. Unlicensed sports games<\/a> like\u00a0Super Mega Baseball 3\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Pro Evolution Soccer<\/a><\/em>,<\/span> which only has a select few licenses,\u00a0would become the norm. The gaming world\u00a0may even see peculiar sporting titles become more prevalent. What are some examples of strange sports games?<\/p>\n

The title\u00a0Pirates Vs. Ninjas Dodgeball\u00a0<\/em>should be telling enough as to why Blazing Lizard’s game features on this list. The Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii game originally released in 2008 and scored 44 and 46 on Metacritic<\/a> respectively.<\/p>\n

Pirates Vs. Ninjas Dodgeball\u00a0<\/em>has some decent gameplay variety to it,\u00a0particularly with how different teams have their own set of strengths and weaknesses. However, the game suffered from weak A.I. that seriously harmed the overall gameplay.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Sega Soccer Slam<\/h2>\n

Considering that it is the world’s most-watched sport<\/a>, it should come as little surprise that there are tons of odd-ball soccer games; one of which is Sega Soccer Slam<\/em>.\u00a0The game\u00a0<\/em>was likely a large inspiration behind\u00a0Mario’s soccer venture<\/a>\u00a0Super Mario Strikers<\/em>, which was released on the Gamecube three years later.<\/p>\n

Sega Soccer Slam\u00a0<\/em>is one of the most critically acclaimed titles<\/a>\u00a0in this article, exemplified by its impressive GameCube Metascore of 84. Much like\u00a0Pirates Vs. Ninjas Dodgeball,\u00a0<\/em>Black Box Games’\u00a0Sega Soccer Slam\u00a0<\/em>features numerous different teams with varying attributes.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Ninja Golf<\/h2>\n

Combining the slow, methodical gameplay of golf with the fast-paced action of Ninja combat is certainly an unorthodox move, but one that compliments each factor surprisingly well\u00a0\u2013 sort of like peanut butter and chocolate.<\/p>\n

Of all the\u00a0many gaming innovations for a company to try and emulate, it was certainly unexpected when Microsoft decided to create their own take on the EyeToy, a failed venture of Sony’s.<\/p>\n

One of the many issues with the Kinect was that there were very few Kinect-exclusive games that made the product look appealing to consumers. It’s safe to say that\u00a0Diabolical Pitch,\u00a0<\/em>a game that tasked a baseball pitcher with taking down hordes of mascots, didn’t have gamers rushing to buy\u00a0Microsoft’s motion-sensing device.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Outlaw Golf<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

A self-proclaimed golf game for adults,\u00a0Outlaw Golf\u00a0<\/em>attempted to liven up the sport of golf<\/a> by essentially putting it in a blender with a Jersey Shore<\/em> boxset. It also hired Steve Carell to provide commentary.<\/p>\n

As well as offering players a cast of characters that looked like they stumbled out of a nightclub,\u00a0Outlaw Golf\u00a0<\/em>is remembered for its over-the-top gameplay mechanics, such as making players punch and kick their caddy to\u00a0improve the state of their composure meter.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Blitz: The League II<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Midway Games’\u00a0Blitz: The League II\u00a0<\/em>released in 2008 and much like its predecessor, offers a hardcore alternative to Electronic Arts’\u00a0Madden\u00a0<\/em>series<\/a> by focusing on the dark side of the National Football League.<\/p>\n

The game exaggerates the sport’s less-glamorous features by letting players inflict bone-breaking injuries on opposition players and take numerous perform enhancing drugs. While not excelling in any one area,\u00a0Blitz: The League II\u00a0<\/em>is a passable game and a solid alternative to the more realistic\u00a0Madden\u00a0<\/em>titles.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions<\/h2>\n

Rise of New Champions\u00a0<\/em>was praised by fans and critics for its deep and varied range of gameplay mechanics. However, the game was criticized for inundating players with fan service and weak teammate A.I. It also plays out quite differently than a traditional soccer game, as scoring generally requires depleting the goalkeeper’s spirit.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Mega Man Soccer<\/h2>\n

Mario isn’t the only platforming mascot to attempt to profit from soccer’s worldwide popularity, as Capcom’s\u00a0Mega Man\u00a0<\/em>featured in a lesser-known soccer game<\/a> on the SNES in 1994.<\/p>\n

It instead offered a fairly true-to-life interpretation of the sport, which resulted in the game performing poorly commercially and critically.<\/p>\n

Mutant Football League\u00a0<\/em>is on the other end of the spectrum to\u00a0Mega Man Soccer<\/em>, as it offers\u00a0some of the most over-the-top action available in the sports genre.\u00a0Digital Dreams Entertainment’s game was released in 2017 and is a modern interpretation of Electronic Arts’ Sega Genesis game\u00a0Mutant League Football.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Mutant Football<\/em> League<\/em>‘s three releases\u00a0<\/em>scored between 62 and 74 on Metacritic, with praise being directed towards the\u00a0comically fun gameplay.<\/p>\n

The most critically acclaimed\u00a0entry on this list along with\u00a0Black Box Games’ Sega Soccer Slam<\/em>, Triband’s\u00a0What The Golf\u00a0<\/em>scored between 79 and 84 on Metacritic and won the Best Mobile Game award at the 2020 Game Developers Choice Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0crowdfunded game has incredible range in its gameplay variety, as it\u00a0throws many bizarre obstacles in the player’s way such as mines, cars, gun-wielding enemies, and exploding barrels.<\/p>\n
