While Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0predominately represents Nintendo’s history; from iconic franchises like\u00a0Pokemon<\/em> to smaller titles like Ice Climbers<\/em>, and even hardware like the NES R.O.B. toy<\/a>; it also represents the video game industry. Characters like Cloud Strife and Sephiroth\u00a0are good examples given\u00a0Final Fantasy 7<\/em> is well-known for being the Square Enix title that found acclaim off of\u00a0Nintendo’s hardware. However, Ultimate<\/em>‘s two DLC packs have brought\u00a0extra\u00a0attention to one publisher in particular so far: Microsoft.<\/p>\n

The first Fighters Pass added Banjo and Kazooie, platforming mascots from the Nintendo 64 era created by Rare – a developer later purchased by Microsoft, eventually leading to the creation of games like Sea of Thieves<\/em>. After that, the second Fighters Pass added Steve from Minecraft<\/em><\/a>, which was originally an indie game that became a cornerstone of Microsoft’s brand after it purchased Mojang Studios in 2014.\u00a0While Nintendo may lean away from another Microsoft-owned character, there are others from the Rare N64 library that could easily get a slot. Namely,\u00a0Joanna Dark from the first-person shooter franchise Perfect Dark<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Rare’s Perfect Dark<\/em> is a spy thriller released in 2000 that carried forth the FPS legacy laid out by its 1997 classic GoldenEye 007<\/em><\/a>. It would receive a prequel in 2005 called Perfect Dark Zero<\/em>, also developed by Rare but released as a Xbox 360 launch title under Microsoft. The two titles follow Joanna Dark as she develops her skills, joins\u00a0the Carrington Institute, and attempts to stop a conspiracy set in motion by a rival corporation called dataDyne.<\/p>\n

The series’ shared history is reminiscent of Banjo and Kazooie, which suggests adding Joanna Dark would carry the same appeal. Though she is arguably a less iconic “mascot” than the bear and bird, the FPS genre began to find its footing on N64 thanks to games like Perfect Dark,<\/em> similar to how Banjo-Kazooie<\/em> helped define the hardware’s 3D platformers<\/a>. What makes her stand out from a mechanical sense is the\u00a0franchise’s sci-fi elements, making her a potential weapon-focused archetype like Snake from Metal Gear Solid<\/em>, but with an athleticism and futuristic tech reminiscent of\u00a0Zero Suit Samus. In fact, her move set could offer Masahiro Sakurai and his team the chance to bring back the\u00a0Perfect Dark<\/em>-inspired items from\u00a0Super Smash Bros. Melee<\/em>.<\/p>\n

However, there is one more pertinent reason why now would be a perfect time to add Joanna Dark as DLC: Marketing potential. The first new Perfect Dark<\/em> game since 2005<\/a> was announced during The Game Awards 2020, and is currently being made by Microsoft’s\u00a0newly created development studio The Initiative. The first reveal trailer is little more than a cinematic, but Smash Bros.<\/em> has a history of using its characters to market new games.<\/p>\n

Obvious examples of this marketing are the\u00a0multitude of\u00a0Fire Emblem<\/em>\u00a0representatives. Western audiences were introduced to Intelligent Systems’ strategy RPGs via Marth and Roy in Melee<\/em>. In fact, Roy\u00a0appeared in the party fighting game prior to Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade<\/em> releasing on the Game Boy Advance<\/a>, and this increased interest led to it being the first English-localized Fire Emblem<\/em> game. Something similar would happen with Smash 4<\/em>, in which Corrin was announced as a DLC fighter prior to the release of Fire Emblem Fates<\/em> outside of Japan.<\/p>\n

Again, it is possible that Nintendo will lean away from any more Microsoft partnerships following Banjo and Steve. However, given fans have expressed an interest in seeing other FPS icons like Halo<\/em>‘s Master Chief appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/em><\/a>, there is room for Joanna Dark to bring the genre more attention. Microsoft has not\u00a0stopped developers from referencing the series\u00a0before, with Rare releasing a “Huntress Figurehead” based on Perfect Dark<\/em> for Sea of Thieves<\/em>\u00a0in 2018. With a new game on the horizon, it makes perfect sense to let the heroine revisit her old Nintendo stomping grounds.<\/p>\n
