The latest entry in the series,\u00a0Devil May Cry 5<\/em><\/a>, has successfully recaptured the series’ magic, exemplified by its impressive Metascores that ranged between 84 and 89.<\/p>\n

Capcom’s\u00a0Devil May Cry 5\u00a0<\/em>has once again forced the hack and slash genre back into the forefront of the gaming industry, and many players will likely be itching for games with similar over-the-top gameplay. To help scratch that itch, here are 10 games with extreme action, predominantly from the hack and slash genre,\u00a0that offer similarly exhilarating experiences.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>God of War III<\/h2>\n

One of the many gaming franchises from the 2000s that was heavily inspired by\u00a0Devil May Cry<\/em>,\u00a0Santa Monica Studio took the gameplay formula that\u00a0Capcom created and implemented it into a world heavily inspired by Greek Mythology.<\/p>\n

The most recent entry into the series,\u00a0God of War<\/em><\/a> (2018), has quickly become the franchise’s most critically acclaimed game; however,\u00a0God of War III\u00a0<\/em>is the better choice for this list, as its gameplay is more akin to\u00a0Devil May Cry.<\/em><\/p>\n

One of the most divsive entries into the iconic\u00a0Resident Evil<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>series,\u00a0<\/em>Capcom’s\u00a0Resident Evil 6<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>frustrated many of the series’ die-hard fans with its focus on movie-like action, rather than the survival horror that the franchise was built on.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, the\u00a0Resident Evil\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Devil May Cry\u00a0<\/em>series’ aren’t just connected by Capcom, but by the fact that\u00a0<\/em>the original\u00a0Devil May Cry\u00a0<\/em>game was initially planned to be\u00a0an entry in\u00a0the\u00a0Resident Evil\u00a0<\/em>series<\/a>, as\u00a0Hideki Kamiya wanted to implement more action mechanics into the survival horror<\/a> franchise.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/h2>\n

The most recent main-series\u00a0Legend of Zelda<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>wasn’t just beloved for its incredible open-world<\/a>, but also for its captivating story that took place 100 years after the Great Calamity.\u00a0Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/em><\/a>, the successor of the\u00a0Dynasty Warriors\u00a0<\/em>inspired\u00a0Hyrule Warriors<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>takes players back in time to the Great Calamity itself.<\/p>\n

Much like the original,\u00a0Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity\u00a0<\/em>isn’t considered to be among the best hack and slash games of this generation<\/a>, but it is a solid game that will appeal to both\u00a0Legend of Zelda <\/em>and hack and slash\u00a0fans.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Street Fighter IV<\/h2>\n

One of Capcom’s many iconic franchises,\u00a0the\u00a0Street Fighter<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>series has been a cornerstone of the fighting genre since its inception in 1987 and has gone on to have over 35 releases since.<\/p>\n

Street Fighter IV<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was\u00a0released in 2008, initially in the arcades, before coming to consoles the following year. The game is one of the franchise’s most critically acclaimed entries, exemplified by its eye-watering 94 Metascore on PlayStation 3<\/a>. Blitz: The League II\u00a0<\/em>was released in 2008 by Midway Games and\u00a0provided\u00a0an alternative take on American Football that highlighted its dark side. Not only does the game let players inflict bone-crushing injuries, but it also\u00a0implements the taking of performance-enhancing drugs as a standard gameplay mechanic.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice<\/h2>\n

The most recent entry into FromSoftware’s so-called “soulsborne” set of games,\u00a0Sekiro: Shadows Die\u00a0<\/em><\/a>Twice<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>ditched the stamina bar that the other games utilized but kept the punishing difficulty<\/a>\u00a0and lack and hand-holding that sets the games apart from most modern titles.<\/p>\n

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice\u00a0<\/em>demands that players strike and dodge with lightning pace to ensure that they stand a chance against the game’s excruciatingly tough bosses. The game’s Divine Dragon and two Giant Serpents are more than enough to earn FromSoftware’s game a spot on this list.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>No More Heroes<\/h2>\n

Grasshopper Manufacture’s\u00a0No More Heroes<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>released exclusively on the Nintendo Wii in 2008, before being ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2020 by Engine Software.<\/p>\n

The game performed well with critics, scoring a respectable 83 on Metacritic<\/a>;\u00a0just one point shy of its sequel\u00a0No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>Grasshopper Manufacture is set to release\u00a0No More Heroes III<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>in 2021, which will see the series’ protagonist\u00a0Travis Touchdown fend off a galactic invasion.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Bayonetta\u00a02<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Bayonetta<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Bayonetta 2<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>are\u00a0undoubtedly the top choices for\u00a0Devil May Cry\u00a0<\/em>fans as the games were directed by\u00a0Devil May Cry<\/em>‘s creator Hideki Kamiya and have a similar take on the hack and slash genre.<\/p>\n

The second game is recommended in particular as PlatinumGames managed to find ways to improve upon the already excellent first title, exemplified by\u00a0Bayonetta 2<\/em>‘s impressive Metascores of 91 and 92 on Wii U and Nintendo Switch. Bayonetta 2<\/em>‘s Metascore isn’t its only impressive accolade, as the game also picked up IGN’s Best Action Game award in 2014.<\/a><\/p>\n
