When the latest reboot of the Saw<\/em> franchise was announced, the most interesting tidbit was the involvement of Chris Rock, both starring in the lead role and conceiving the story. Playing a detective on the trail of a mysterious serial killer, Rock is joining Get Out<\/em>\u2019s Jordan Peele<\/a> and Halloween<\/em>\u2019s Danny McBride in the growing roster of comedy people transitioning into horror cinema.\u00a0The Chris Rock Saw<\/em>\u00a0movie,\u00a0titled Spiral: From the Book of Saw<\/strong><\/em>, has been compared to David Fincher\u2019s Se7en<\/em> by its director Darren Lynn Bousman.<\/p>\n

Bousman, who previously directed the second, third, and fourth entries in the mainline Saw<\/em> series, recently told Empire, \u201cChris came in with a thriller concept. He pitched this very elaborate, dense idea. We wanted it to feel much more like Se7en<\/em>. But it has so many ties to the mythos of Saw<\/em>.\u201d While Se7en<\/em> isn\u2019t quite as gory as the average Saw<\/em> movie, Fincher didn\u2019t pull any punches<\/a> in depicting the gruesome Biblical crimes of John Doe.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, Rock is also bringing a healthy dose of humor to the Saw<\/em> franchise with Spiral<\/em>. The comedian has drawn comparisons between the jokes he contributed to Spiral<\/em> to alleviate the terror<\/a> and the jokes that Eddie Murphy injected into Sylvester Stallone\u2019s dark, dramatic Beverly Hills Cop<\/em> script<\/a> when he was brought on to retool it as a comedy.<\/p>\n

Back in 2004, some critics compared the original Saw<\/em> movie to Se7en<\/em>. In fact, in a review for Entertainment Weekly<\/em>, Owen Gleiberman called the movie \u201ca blatant imitation of Se7en<\/em><\/a>.\u201d When screenwriter Leigh Whannell was asked in an\u00a0Arrow<\/em> interview<\/a> if Se7en<\/em> was a direct influence on Saw<\/em>, he said, \u201cFor me as the writer, definitely. I mean, Se7en<\/em> is just a very well-constructed film, and if you\u2019re writing a thriller, it can\u2019t hurt to study it. In terms of the story, though, James [Wan, the director]<\/a> and I never really felt Se7en<\/em> was that close to our film.\u201d While the hunt for a psychotic serial killer is a shared plot point in both movies, Se7en<\/em> is told from the cops\u2019 perspective and Saw<\/em> is told from the perspective of two of the killer\u2019s victims. Spiral<\/em>, it seems, will be more of a police procedural, hence the parallels with Se7en<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Originally, Spiral<\/em> was slated to be released on October 23, 2020, to coincide with Halloween, but the studio later moved it up to May 15, 2020. Then, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>, it was pushed way back to May 21, 2021, the release date that Lionsgate had previously earmarked for John Wick: Chapter 4<\/em>. Hopefully, with the vaccine making its way across the world, Spiral<\/em> will finally be able to meet one of its release dates.<\/p>\n
