It’s truly solidifying itself as one of the most iconic “whodunnit” games of the generation.\u00a0No one could have guessed that lying and (literal) backstabbing with friends<\/a> would be just what everyone needed in such\u00a0trying times.<\/p>\n

Among Us<\/em>\u00a0may seem like a simple game, but relies on the cunning and innovation of their player base to keep things interesting. No matter how accessible and fun<\/a> it is, there are tons of flubs that even the best of players find themselves making. Here are a few\u00a0common blunders Among Us<\/em> fans should try to avoid.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Not Checking The Progress Bar<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Although this is a feature that can be turned off<\/a>, most of the time in public lobbies the progress bar is updated in real-time. Checking in on a supposed crewmate while they do a task is essential to weeding out any impostors. If a player is near a task area and leaves after the progress bar (seen in the top left corner of the screen) has been updated, then they’re likely not the impostor. However, if they stand around a task area, walk away, and haven’t progressed the bar, then it’s likely that they’ve just faked their task instead of actually doing one.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Going\u00a0Solo To Finish Tasks<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

It’s important to finish one’s tasks as fast as possible but remember to always keep a guard up. Some players find themselves too headstrong about one thing or the other: keeping an eye on others or completing tasks.<\/p>\n

If a crewmate goes off on their own to mind their tasks, they’re a sure easy kill. Try to allow at least one or two crewmates to be close by choosing tasks in a room someone is already working in; this will allow crewmates to vouch for each other or to have a witness to help identify the killer. Stick together to avoid misunderstandings!<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Not Calling Emergency Meetings<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Not only is the emergency meeting button for snitching on another player for venting, but it can mean winning or losing the entire game. Impostors only need to widdle down the crewmates to an even ratio; meaning an impostor wins if there is only one other crewmate and a team of two impostors win if there are only two crewmates left.<\/p>\n

Remember to always do the math! If there are only four crewmates and two impostors, call an emergency meeting as fast as possible. If the round continues, the impostors only need a double kill to get the win automatically. Chances are better if at least one suspicious player is ejected. If it happens to be the impostor, their chances of winning will have gone down dramatically.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Faking A Visual Task<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

While faking tasks is a solid way of deceiving other players, there are downsides.\u00a0Visual tasks are the riskiest to fake since they\u00a0are accompanied by small animations that play when are completed and are generally\u00a0avoided\u00a0by impostors. With a crewmate watching and no animation popping up to clear a player’s name, it’s usually game over. As impostor, stick to other tasks that\u00a0crewmates can’t easily verify as completed from a simple look.<\/p>\n

On the other hand,\u00a0when playing as a crewmate<\/a>, often time players make the mistake of completing a visual task on their own. Ensure that when completing a visual task, another crewmate is watching. Having a witness when completing a visual task can clear a player early into the game.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Not Keeping Busy As A Ghost<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Often time, newer players will be preoccupied with keeping track of their crewmates that are still alive, tracking them down, or waiting for a kill to happen. However, just because a player’s been killed, doesn’t mean they’re out of the game completely. It’s important to still complete tasks as a ghost as it can still be a means to win the game for the innocent crewmates.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, if playing as an impostor ghost, remember to help the remaining fellow impostor<\/a>; this means closing doors to trap others in a room or sabotaging the lights to make navigating more difficult for the crewmates.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Defending A Fellow Impostor Too Aggressively<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Among Us<\/em> is still a team game and helping out teammates is key to winning. However, it is important to be wary of defending an impostor teammate too strongly. If there is hard evidence behind disproving their innocence, it’s best not to vouch for them; especially if there is more than one witness to their slip up.<\/p>\n

Defending someone who is deemed guilty by the majority of players will look suspicious and may end up backfiring<\/a>, resulting in both impostors unintentionally revealing themselves. Of course, it is important to help a teammate when playing impostor, but if there’s too much hard evidence against them, it may be best to vote with the crowd in an attempt to fit in<\/a>.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Faking Tasks No One Has<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

There are numerous tasks in the game: common, short, long, and visual. Common tasks are tasks either every player has or no player has. Similar to the mistake about faking visual tasks, faking common tasks that aren’t assigned to any other crewmates is an immediate cause for suspicion<\/a>. As impostor, take note of which\u00a0common tasks are listed and make sure not to fake progress at a task module that would otherwise be unused throughout the game.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Overexplaining Yourself<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Being too eager to clear one’s name is often grounds for suspicion. Explain every location, every task, every player one came into contact with and suddenly everyone’s pointing fingers. Speak when there is vital information to help crewmates or an opening for a bluff to help out a fellow impostor. Only speaking to have a clear alibi can open the floor for others to accuse another player of only caring about clearing their name and not trying to\u00a0single out the impostor.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Not Memorizing Location<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Having everyone account for where they were and when is vital to piecing together the events that led to a kill. However, some players, while caught up in the moment, report a dead body without first checking the map. Knowing the exact location is incredibly important! The location of the body usually being the first question asked by all other crewmates once the report has been made. If the player didn’t bother remembering where they were on the map when reporting the body, it can give the impostor(s) an edge, allowing them to lie about their whereabouts much easier.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Not Checking If The Coast Is Clear<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

This flub happens to the best of players; inexperienced or pro. Sometimes players get too eager for a kill when playing impostor and go for it when another crewmate was in their field of vision. Or perhaps they’re looking for a clean escape just to vent to a room where a sneaky crewmate was hiding.<\/p>\n

It’s best to not rush; take some time to ensure the target is by themselves. When venting, remember that there’s no rush to pop out immediately; look around and pick the room with the least amount of activity. However, when the lights are off, field of vision is inhibited and it’s best to take advantage of the sabotage<\/a> as the lights are only broken for the crewmates, not the impostors.<\/p>\n
