In such a difficult year, it\u2019s been a pleasure for most gamers to be able to escape reality and dive into a different world for some of the best forms of escapism available. Even though this top ten from Metacritic is dominated by remakes and remasters, every\u00a0game on this list deserves a place in any RPG fan\u2019s collection.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Trials Of Mana (Metascore 76)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/trials-of-mana.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>In a year of remakes, remasters, and reboots, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/trials-of-mana-best-party-member-ability-set-up\/\">the <i>Trials of Mana <\/i>remake<\/a> was one of the most hotly anticipated games of the year for fans of JRPGs. It\u2019s true that it didn\u2019t have the same budget as the <i>Final Fantasy VII Remake <\/i>did and there\u2019s quite a bit grinding but <i>Trials of Mana <\/i>is still a great game.<\/p>\n<p>It has a solid battle system with an excellent character customization system that\u2019s surprisingly flexible. It addition, it\u2019s very faithful to the SNES original, and being able to play from different perspectives added longevity to the game.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Sakuna: Of Rice And Ruin (Metascore 79)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/7-Sakuna.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Released in late 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/sakuna-of-rice-and-ruin\/\"><i>Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin<\/i><\/a> is an action RPG developed by a two-man team in the Edelweiss studio. It was released on the PC, Nintendo Switch, and the PlayStation 4 and despite being classified as a JRPG it\u2019s also a farming sim.<\/p>\n<p>The contrast in genres seems to blend perfectly as both playing styles complement each other and offer the kind of depth that not many big-budget AAA releases can match. It\u2019s true that the resource management side of the game won\u2019t appeal to everyone but for those looking for something a little different <i>Sakuna <\/i>is an easy recommendation.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore (Metascore 81)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/3-Tokyo-Mirage-Sessions-FE.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Released in early 2020, <i>Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore<\/i> was released on the Nintendo Switch as the definitive version of the JRPG crossover of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/gaming-crossovers-loved-didnt\/\"><i>Fire Emblem <\/i>and <i>Persona<\/i><\/a> on the Wii U. It\u2019s still a solid JRPG and the game definitive deserved more exposure on a more popular console system.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Trails Of Cold Steel IV (Metascore 81)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/6-The-Legend-of-Heroes-Trails-of-Cold-Steel-IV.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i>The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV <\/i>is the final entry in the <i>Cold Steel <\/i>series and the seventh in the\u00a0<i>Trails <\/i>series that released in Western territories. The series was developed by Falcom, the same team that created the <i>Ys <\/i>series, and is one of the most ambitious sagas in gaming. It has great characters, immense world-building, and an <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/jrpg-combat-system-best-ranked\/\">excellent combat system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The series is a slow burn and players really need to start from the beginning to fully appreciate the series. However, as a conclusion to the long-running series,\u00a0<i>Trails of Cold Steel IV <\/i>is an epic finale that will please long time fans.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Nioh 2 (Metascore 85)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/4-Nioh-2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The <i><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/nioh\/\">Nioh<\/a> <\/i>series is considered by many fans of the series to be the best of the many <em>Souls<\/em>-like action RPGs that have hit the market since <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/dark-souls\/\"><i>Dark Souls<\/i><\/a> became a huge success. <i>Nioh,<\/i> however, has been successful in making\u00a0<em>Nioh<\/em> its own thing by borrowing elements from the equally punishing <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/ninja-gaiden\/\"><i>Ninja Gaiden<\/i><\/a> series.<\/p>\n<p>The combat is beautifully fluid and varied and features some of the best and most strategic swordplays in the genre. While it\u2019s not massively different from its predecessor, <i>Nioh 2<\/i> still takes everything from the first game and makes it better in every way from <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/hidden-secrets-nioh-2\/\">the side quests<\/a>, the visuals to the epic boss fights.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Yakuza: Like A Dragon (Metascore 85)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/yakuza-series-greatest-strength-protagonist.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Prior to this entry, the <i>Yakuza <\/i>series has always been an action RPG with a fighting system that has more in common with the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/streets-of-rage-arcade-classics-deserve-comebacks\/\"><i>Streets of Rage <\/i>and <i>Double Dragon<\/i><\/a>. With the newest entry in the series <i><a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/yakuza-like-a-dragon\">Yakuza: Like a Dragon<\/a>,\u00a0<\/i>the game not only introduced a new protagonist but a completely new combat system.<\/p>\n<p>Now the game has adopted a new turn-based combat system that has more in common with the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/dragon-quest\/\"><i>Dragon Quest<\/i><\/a> series than it does its own predecessors. The system is now more flexible and customizable than ever and it\u2019s just as entertainingly hilarious as it is brutal.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Final Fantasy VII: Remake (Metascore 87)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/final-fantasy-7-remake-promotional-art-title.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>One of the biggest releases of the year was also the more hotly anticipated games of all time especially for fans of the 1997 classic was the <i>Final Fantasy VII Remake. <\/i>Thankfully, the game more than lived up to fan\u2019s impossibly high expectations with its stunning production values, great combat system, and the way it fleshed out already well-established characters in the <i>FF7 <\/i>canon.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a class=\"bc-title-link\" title=\"10 Best JRPG Villains And Antagonists Of All Time\" href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/greatest-most-evil-villains-jrpg-history\/\">10 Best JRPG Villains And Antagonists Of All Time<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The only real disappointing thing about this remake is that it\u2019s only the first part of a series that may become a trilogy. It\u2019s not the complete story that everyone hoped for but it is an excellent start in what is sure to be an amazing series.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Xenoblade Chronicles: The Definitive Edition (Metascore 89)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/xenoblade-chronicles-definitive-edition-gaur-plains.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/xenoblade-chronicles\/\">Xenoblade Chronicles<\/a>: The Definitive Edition\u00a0<\/i>is the remastered and expanded RPG epic that originally released on the Nintendo Wii in 2010. It was one of the best games of a generation and that remains the case <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/xenoblade-chronicles-definitive-edition-pro-tips\/\">in this expanded version<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Not only does the game come with completely reworked visuals built for the Nintendo Switch but the music has been reworked allowing players to switch between the old and new soundtrack. In addition, it comes complete with the expansion<i> Future Connected<\/i> which is<i> <\/i>set one year after the events of the original game.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Demon\u2019s Souls (Metascore 92)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/demons-souls-tower-knight.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Released as a launch title exclusively for the PlayStation 5, <i>Demon\u2019s Souls <\/i>is a remake of the cult hit that released exclusively on the PlayStation 3. It\u2019s the origins of the hit series <i>Dark Souls<\/i> and both share many of the same themes.<\/p>\n<p>Remade from the ground up, the visuals are absolutely stunning. Additionally, the improvements made to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/demons-souls-tips-playing-soldier\/\">the game\u2019s mechanics<\/a> and smoother framerate not only make it one of the best JRPGs released in 2020 but one of the launch titles ever.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Persona 5 Royal (Metascore 95)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/persona-5-royal-art.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Released worldwide in 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/persona-5-royal\/\"><i>Persona 5: Royal<\/i><\/a> is an enhanced version of the original which launched in 2018 on the PS3 and the PS4. The game was already hailed as one of the greatest RPGs of all time and one of the best games across two generations.<\/p>\n<p>The game combines heavy elements of dungeon crawling and exploration with social interactions and developing relationships with party members.
