Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>and\u00a0Harvest Moon: One World\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>are two farming simulators stemming from the same original franchise. Now, these two franchises are goin head-to-head as they release in the same month.<\/p>\n

It looks like the two games are competing with one another for fan attention, especially fueled by Marvelous ending its work with Natsume back in 2014 by rebranding as\u00a0Story of Seasons<\/em>. When it comes to collector’s editions, both games even include animal plushes<\/a>. So if players only have time for one, which is more worth their time and money?<\/p>\n

Sometimes, fans still get confused when it comes to the split Marvelous made from Natsume, the company responsible for English localization, thereby creating the\u00a0Story of Seasons\u00a0<\/em>games. But Natsume, still owning the Harvest Moon\u00a0<\/em>name, decided to make its own games inspired by the originals that fans in the east and west had come to love.<\/p>\n

It’s unclear why Marvelous pulled its\u00a0Bokujou Monogatari\u00a0<\/em>series\u2014what the series is known as in Japanese since the beginning\u2014away from\u00a0Natsume and decided to use its own subsidiary XSEED for localization. But ultimately, both studios developing each franchise are now made of completely different teams than the original\u00a0Harvest Moon\u00a0<\/em>games, though some consider the\u00a0Story of Seasons<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>series to be the “real”\u00a0Harvest Moon\u00a0<\/em>games.<\/p>\n

For both franchises, the overall graphics quality has been the main focus of criticism. For the original\u00a0Harvest Moon\u00a0<\/em>games, graphics were never a strong point, While now, many find\u00a0A Wonderful Life<\/em>‘s graphics<\/a> charming for nostalgic reasons and many still enjoy the 16-bit pixel art of some older titles, they were regarded as being “unimpressive” by past critics.<\/p>\n

Now, the graphics of neither\u00a0Harvest Moon\u00a0<\/em>nor\u00a0Story of Seasons\u00a0<\/em>have quite lived up to expectations by modern standards, but\u00a0One World\u00a0<\/em>has fallen behind in this race. Many fans feel the\u00a0Harvest Moon\u00a0<\/em>games developed by Natsume look no better than free mobile games<\/a>. When Natsume announced\u00a0One World<\/em>, it claimed the game would have fresh graphics brought by a new engine, and while they’re certainly an improvement from\u00a0Light of Hope<\/em>, animations are robotic,\u00a0textures are rough, and it overall looks behind its time.<\/p>\n

But when making the comparison to mobile graphics, some farming simulator fans have said the same about\u00a0Pioneers of Olive Town<\/em>, but perhaps this is more of a positive comment to the strides mobile games have made in recent years. Still, animations in\u00a0PoOT\u00a0<\/em>are much smoother and generally more aesthetically pleasing to look at than\u00a0those seen in\u00a0One World<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Marriage candidates in farming simulators are one of the biggest elements of interest in the community. When it comes to\u00a0Pioneers of Olive Town<\/em>‘s marriage prospects, fans felt that the men were a bit underwhelming while the women’s designs made it difficult to choose between them. But with the recent announcement that\u00a0Story of Seasons\u00a0<\/em>will bring back some romanceable characters<\/a> from past installments, it makes relationships in\u00a0PoOT\u00a0<\/em>all the more interesting.<\/p>\n

Then there’s\u00a0Harvest Moon:\u00a0<\/em>One World<\/em>‘s take on relationships. Though some players are excited about Malika’s design and Natsume is attempting to keep the options appealing,\u00a0Harvest Moon\u00a0<\/em>has opted not to allow same-sex relationships<\/a> while\u00a0Story of Seasons\u00a0<\/em>will with its upcoming installment just as it had with\u00a0Friends of Mineral Town<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Natsume isn’t giving up on the\u00a0Harvest Moon\u00a0<\/em>brand name yet, but it’s likely that most farming sim fans who aren’t too busy with\u00a0Stardew Valley<\/em>‘s 1.5 update<\/a> will likely choose\u00a0Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town\u00a0<\/em>over\u00a0Harvest Moon: One World<\/em>. However, one plus\u00a0Harvest Moon\u00a0<\/em>may have over\u00a0Story of Seasons\u00a0<\/em>is that it’s in development for PS4 and Xbox One as well, making it more accessible to players.<\/p>\n

Harvest Moon: One World\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>is out on March 2, 2021 for the PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.\u00a0Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0will be released on March 23, 2021 on the Nintendo Switch.<\/p>\n
