Gabe Newell, founder and president of Valve, recently stated in an interview that Valve has multiple games in development<\/a> with announcements to follow. While some fans are speculating\u00a0that Gabe Newell could be referring to the long awaited\u00a0Half Life 3,\u00a0<\/em>there are a number of franchises that Valve could revive given the recent success of\u00a0Half Life: Alyx<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Gabe Newell implied that\u00a0Half Life: Alyx\u00a0<\/em>has created a momentum in Valve<\/a> to\u00a0return to making single-player games. While Valve has reportedly been developing on a number of games over the years, they have subsequently been scrapped or cancelled. With Valve’s commitment to creating new games, this hopefully signifies the rebirth of some forgotten franchises.<\/p>\n

Known\u00a0as probably the most famous\u00a0Valve series,\u00a0Half-Life 3<\/em> has had fans waiting for over a decade now. The original\u00a0Half-Life\u00a0<\/em>was a first-person\u00a0shooter that allowed players to assume the role of Gordon Freeman, a scientist who must escape a facility after it is overrun by aliens. It was followed up\u00a0with a sequel,\u00a0Half-Life 2\u00a0<\/em>in 2004 and two extra episodic sequels titled\u00a0Half-Life 2: Episode 1\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Half-Life 2: Episode 2.\u00a0<\/em>Over the years, multiple\u00a0Half Life\u00a0<\/em>games have been planned but subsequently canceled including\u00a0<\/a>Half-Life 3<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Half-Life 2: Episode 3.<\/em><\/p>\n

With the recent\u00a0release of\u00a0Half-Life: Alyx,\u00a0<\/em>it seems that Valve is ready to jump back into developing single-player games once again. For a while now, Valve has been coasting off the success of\u00a0its digital distribution service, Steam<\/a>, and its esports titles in\u00a0Dota 2\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Counter Strike: Global Offensive.\u00a0<\/em>However, with Valve planning to announce some new games soon, it hopefully implies that\u00a0the long-awaited\u00a0Half Life\u00a0<\/em>sequel will finally make an appearance. Despite the fact that fans have been waiting for over a decade, there’s still plenty of excitement for\u00a0the return of Gordon Freeman. Moreover, the fact that\u00a0Half Life: Alyx\u00a0<\/em>was so\u00a0critically acclaimed\u00a0despite being limited to VR should be an exciting prospect for the series’ direction.<\/p>\n

At this point in time,\u00a0Portal 3\u00a0<\/em>is probably the least likely sequel that Valve would make. While\u00a0the\u00a0Portal\u00a0<\/em>series is universally acclaimed<\/a>, the story at the end of\u00a0Portal 2\u00a0<\/em>gave fans closure, and Valve has likely shifted its focus to other series. Many of the original staff that were part of the\u00a0Portal\u00a0<\/em>series have left Valve, and much of its success relied on the quirky, yet dark narrative from the writers. The series itself is far from forgotten, though, and\u00a0it wouldn’t be surprising if Valve’s new titles were related to the\u00a0Portal\u00a0<\/em>series in some way.<\/p>\n

In fact, Valve has revisited the\u00a0Portal\u00a0<\/em>universe in 2016 when it released\u00a0The Lab,\u00a0<\/em>a VR\u00a0 showcase game that takes place in Aperture Laboratories. Together with the\u00a0Portal 2\u00a0<\/em>level editor on the Steam Workshop<\/a>, the series as a whole\u00a0still appears to play a role in Valve’s identity. Though\u00a0Portal 3\u00a0<\/em>is unlikely to happen, the\u00a0Portal\u00a0<\/em>universe as a whole still has a lot to offer.<\/p>\n

Team Fortress 2\u00a0<\/em>is often called the “forgotten child” of Valve as its development and updates have slowed to a halt with the success of\u00a0Dota 2\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Counter Strike: Global Offensive.\u00a0<\/em>The first\u00a0Team Fortress\u00a0<\/em>was originally\u00a0a\u00a0Quake\u00a0<\/em>mod that Valve ported to its\u00a0Half-Life\u00a0<\/em>engine as a way to promote the\u00a0Half-Life\u00a0<\/em>series.\u00a0Eventually, Valve would release a sequel,\u00a0Team Fortress 2,\u00a0<\/em>a\u00a0class-based shooter<\/a> with unique, cartoonish graphics and light-hearted gameplay.<\/p>\n

Although\u00a0Team Fortress 2\u00a0<\/em>had some support in its competitive scene, it never grew into a full-fledged esport, and fans often cite this as the reason for Valve setting the series aside. With the announcement that new projects are in development at Valve, however,\u00a0Team Fortress\u00a0<\/em>could see a revival, especially given how popular the genre has gotten. Character-based shooters like\u00a0Valorant<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0Apex Legends\u00a0<\/em>have taken the world by storm, and a new\u00a0Team Fortress\u00a0<\/em>game could prove to be just as popular.<\/p>\n

The Left 4 Dead\u00a0<\/em>series<\/a>\u00a0has a wonderful reputation, but despite its popularity, Valve has repeatedly denied that a third game is in development. Although there have been a number of rumors over the years as well as evidence for a cancelled\u00a0Left 4 Dead\u00a0<\/em>project,\u00a0Valve announced last year that it had stopped working on anything related to the franchise for a number of years. Still, the\u00a0Left 4 Dead\u00a0<\/em>series is extremely popular and Valve hasn’t closed off the series for good yet.<\/p>\n

With the success of\u00a0Half Life: Alyx<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>there are a number of possibilities for franchises to appear on VR in the future. In particular, the\u00a0Left 4 Dead\u00a0<\/em>series could make fantastic use of VR given that there’s a lack of co-op VR games currently available. Even if none of Valve’s new projects end up as a new\u00a0Left 4 Dead\u00a0<\/em>game, it’s likely that\u00a0it will influence\u00a0the new games given how well-designed its co-op mechanics are.<\/p>\n

Originally conceived by Garry Newman of Facepunch Studios,\u00a0Garry’s Mod\u00a0<\/em>is a sandbox game<\/a> that was created as a mod for Valve’s Source game engine. Although the base game had no objectives, players were able to spawn and manipulate assets from various Valve games. Over time,\u00a0user-created game modes began to gain popularity and some were eventually turned into standalone games. Garry’s Mod<\/em>\u00a0also influenced a lot of young talent\u00a0that would go on to\u00a0succeed in the\u00a0indie development scene.<\/p>\n

While Facepunch Studios has been working on its survival game\u00a0Rust,<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>there have been a number of rumors regarding a sequel to\u00a0Garry’s Mod\u00a0<\/em>over the years.\u00a0 Garry Newman announced a spiritual successor to\u00a0Garry’s Mod<\/em>\u00a0<\/i>back in 2017\u00a0<\/i>titled\u00a0Sandbox\u00a0<\/em>that was reportedly being developed in Unreal Engine 4. However,\u00a0Garry recently switched over to Valve’s Source 2 engine, and although it’s unclear how much involvement Valve will have,\u00a0<\/em>there’s\u00a0a lot of potential\u00a0given that Valve’s biggest games like\u00a0Dota 2\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Half Life: Alyx\u00a0<\/em>were created in the Source 2 engine.<\/p>\n

With Gabe Newell’s announcement that Valve has begun working on new projects again, fans will be excited to see which franchises make a return. Although Valve has a history of shelving and cancelling sequels over the years, the success of\u00a0Half Life: Alyx\u00a0<\/em>and the Valve Index seems to have reignited\u00a0its drive to create new games again.<\/p>\n
