Although overshadowed by the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox during its heyday, the Nintendo GameCube<\/a> has since developed a devoted fanbase and appreciation for its great library of exclusive games. Sadly, newer gamers have no other option than to hunt down a secondhand GameCube to experience these classic titles, as many noteworthy games are only available on Nintendo’s little purple box.<\/p>\n

The console is home to many heavy hitters, with several GameCube games holding up well<\/a> to this day. While some games from that era such as\u00a0Super Mario Sunshine\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker\u00a0<\/em>have since been updated for newer Nintendo systems, there still remains a significant number of both first and third party titles left exclusively trapped on the console, sometimes only playable elsewhere on a Wii via backward compatibility. Regardless of which genre gamers prefer, Nintendo’s classic console is home to experiences for all tastes.<\/p>\n

As would be expected, many of Nintendo’s most popular mascots have entries on the GameCube including Mario,\u00a0Link, and the rest of the gang. The\u00a0F-Zero\u00a0<\/em>franchise appears on the system with another high speed racing game in F-Zero GX<\/em><\/a>, testing players wits and split second thinking to survive its deadly courses. Fox McCloud and company\u00a0offer two installments with\u00a0StarFox Assault<\/em> being a more traditional space shooter in line with the rest of the series, while\u00a0StarFox Adventures\u00a0<\/em>breaks away from series conventions with a third person adventure title similar to the\u00a0Zelda\u00a0<\/em>series. Meanwhile,\u00a0Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Super Smash Bros. Melee\u00a0<\/em>build upon their predecessors and are arguably still the best games in each respective series. Sadly, these games have never been ported to a more modern Nintendo console, like the Switch.<\/p>\n

Pokemon\u00a0Colosseum<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Pokemon\u00a0XD: Gale of Darkness<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>continue the gameplay style\u00a0seen in\u00a0Pokemon\u00a0Stadium\u00a0<\/em>on the Nintendo 64\u00a0while offering an additional spin to the formula for added depth. For fans of a galaxy far, far away,\u00a0the\u00a0Rogue Squadron\u00a0<\/em>series is a challenging flight combat series with gorgeous graphics and immersive gameplay, providing a truly authentic\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0<\/em>experience. Furthermore,\u00a0Battalion Wars\u00a0<\/em>offers a different take on the\u00a0Advance Wars\u00a0<\/em>series as a third person shooter mixed with strategy elements, all while\u00a0Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes\u00a0<\/em><\/a>is a reimaging of the PS1 original, which should satisfy any fans eagerly\u00a0anticipating the rumored next gen remake<\/p>\n

Despite Nintendo’s association with family friendly entertainment, the GameCube has a number of titles that are not afraid to dive\u00a0into darker themes as well. The critically acclaimed horror classic\u00a0Eternal Darkness Sanity’s Requiem\u00a0<\/em>is a\u00a0standout for\u00a0fans of all thing spooky for its disturbing atmosphere and innovative, mind-bending gameplay. The game is infamous for how it keeps gamers on their toes, always playing mind games (known as Sanity Effects<\/a>\u00a0in the game) such as the\u00a0audio suddenly lowering by itself or the character’s own head falling off.\u00a0For players who prefer supernatural themed\u00a0games with more of an emphasis on action,\u00a0Geist\u00a0<\/em>revolves around taking control of a disembodied spirit, giving players the ability to possess people (and even objects) to haunt their way to the end of this unique\u00a0adventure thriller.<\/p>\n

The GameCube has strong entries in the RPG department as well with notable standouts such as\u00a0Lost Kingdoms\u00a0<\/em>(developed by FromSoftware, the creator of\u00a0Dark Souls<\/em>) which presents players with a rich fantasy setting and real time combat. For gamers that prefer science fiction to fantasy, there is\u00a0Custom Robo<\/em>, an engaging action game where customizable robots are pit against each other in combat. Also worth mentioning is the\u00a0Baiten Kaitos\u00a0<\/em>series, an epic and grand scale journey across a kingdom in the clouds, developed by Monolith Software of\u00a0Xenosaga\u00a0<\/em>fame<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Finally, for everything and anything in between, the GameCube is home to many games that can hardly be categorized into a single genre for their often bizarre uniqueness.\u00a0Odama <\/em>is a war simulation that plays like a pinball machine that should entertain fans of strategy titles while shoot’em up enthusiasts can find plenty to enjoy in the fast paced excitement of\u00a0Chaos Field<\/em>.\u00a0For extra measure, although\u00a0Super Mario Sunshine\u00a0<\/em>mentioned earlier is the most notable platformer on the console, there are other just as enjoyable entries in the genre like the colorfully cute\u00a0Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg\u00a0<\/em>as well\u00a0the enormously charming\u00a0Chibi Robo<\/em>.<\/p>\n
