There are expectations to this rule though, such as the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Spyro%20the%20dragon\/\">Spyro<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Crash%20Bandicoot\/\">Crash Bandicoot<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>trilogies, as well as the iconic stealth game\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Metal%20Gear%20Solid\/\">Metal Gear Solid<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>Another factor of the PlayStation 1 that hasn&#8217;t aged badly is how genuinely scary some of its horror games still are; although some gameplay mechanics and visuals don&#8217;t hold up today, the 10 games on this list still provide unsettling experiences that make great use of the PlayStation 1&#8217;s limited hardware to strike fear into the players.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>OverBlood<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/overblood-ps1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Published outside of Japan by industry giants Electronic Arts,\u00a0<em>OverBlood\u00a0<\/em>is a science fiction horror game that is remembered today for its being the first survival horror title to use a\u00a0fully three-dimensional virtual environment.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the environmental innovations,\u00a0<em>OverBlood\u00a0<\/em>was unique for its time for blending fighting and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/hardest-puzzle-games\/\">puzzle mechanics<\/a>; as well as allowing players to seamlessly switch between third and first-person perspectives. A sequel,\u00a0<em>OverBlood 2\u00a0<\/em>was released in 1998 to a lackluster reception.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>D<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/d-ps1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Released in 1995,\u00a0<em>D\u00a0<\/em>is an interactive movie that puts players in the shoes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/1999\/11\/02\/d2s-laura-set-to-retire\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">famous digital actress Laura Harris<\/a>, who is tasked with investigating a hospital that her father has locked himself inside after a killing spree; it soon becomes clear that things aren&#8217;t as they seem though, as the hospital transforms into an eery castle once Laura arrives.\u00a0Befitting of the interactive movie genre,\u00a0players cannot save the game and\u00a0must complete it within two hours.<\/p>\n<p><em>D<\/em>\u00a0was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/reviews\/d-review\/1900-2558448\/#comments-block-32560975\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reviewed by GameSpot<\/a> in 2000 who gave the game<em>\u00a0<\/em>a score of 5.7. Scissorman is undoubtedly one the gaming industry&#8217;s scariest most intimidating villains of all time and is likely the key reason as to why <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160303183739\/http:\/\/www.g4tv.com\/thefeed\/blog\/post\/658946\/x-play-top-10-scariest-games\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">X-Play listed\u00a0<em>Clock Tower\u00a0<\/em>as the eighth scariest game of all time<\/a> in 2006.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Parasite Eve<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/parasite-eve.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>One of the better-known names on this list, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Parasite%20Eve\/\">Parasite Eve<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was developed by Square (who merged with Enix in 2003 to create Square Enix) and was released in 1998. The action role-playing game is based on the horror book of the same name, which also inspired a 1997 film. The game&#8217;s horror themes, fixed perspective, and the story that is centered around police, unsurprisingly caused the game to be frequently compared, sometimes unfairly, to the revolutionary\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Resident%20Evil\/\">Resident Evil<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despite having to deal with comparisons to the iconic\u00a0<em>Resident Evil,\u00a0<\/em><em>Parasite Eve\u00a0<\/em>was well-received by fans and critics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/game\/playstation\/parasite-eve\">exemplified by its 81 Metascore<\/a> and 9.0 User Score, which is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/metacritic-highest-rated-games-user-score\/\">highest user scores on the entire\u00a0site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Koudelka<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/koudelka-ps1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Developed by Sacnoth,\u00a0<em>Koudelka<\/em> is a <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/annoying-mechanics-in-jrpgs\/\">Japanese role-playing game<\/a> from the<em> Shadows Hearts<\/em> series. The game is set in the Great British country Wales and finds a nice blend of puzzle-solving and turn-based combat.<\/p>\n<p>Like many games on this list,\u00a0<em>Koudelka<\/em> draws inspiration from\u00a0Capcom&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Resident Evil\u00a0<\/em>series through its\u00a0fixed camera angles, pre-rendered backgrounds, and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-space-exploration-games\/\">exploration-heavy gameplay<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Alone In The Dark: The New Nightmare<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/alone-in-the-dark-the-new-nightmare.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Also known as\u00a0<em>Alone in the Dark 4,\u00a0<\/em>Infogrames&#8217; PlayStation 1 classic\u00a0<em>Alone In The Dark: The New Nightmare<\/em> was developed by Darkworks and was initially released in 2001. Releasing on the PlayStation 1 over a year after the release of the PlayStation 2 understandably hurt initial sales, though they soon picked up when the game came to PC and the second generation of Sony console a short while later.<\/p>\n<p><em>Alone In The Dark: The New Nightmare <\/em>was<em>\u00a0<\/em>released on Steam in 2013, though the lackluster port earned the game an All Reviews\u00a0rating of Mixed.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Dino Crisis<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/dino-crisis.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The first entry into the series of the same name,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/dino-crisis\/\">Dino Crisis<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was released in 1999 by the era&#8217;s horror specialist, Capcom.
