Netflix has announced the casting of its lead for the upcoming prequel to the successful series\u00a0The Witcher<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. Actress Jodie-Turner Smith will be starring in the six-part limited series entitled\u00a0The Witcher: Blood Origin<\/em>, set in an elven world 1200 years before the world of\u00a0the Henry Cavill series.<\/p>\n

The Witcher: Blood Origin<\/em><\/a> will follow the creation of the first prototype Witcher and the events that lead to the worlds of monsters, humans, and elves merging into one. Jodie Turner-Smith will be playing an elven warrior named Eile, who has left her clan and her position as a guardian of the Queen to become a nomadic musician. She becomes forced to return to her former ways as she seeks vengeance and redemption.<\/p>\n

Jodie Turner-Smith is a highly acclaimed and in-demand actress. She received critical recognition for her role in the film\u00a0Queen and Slim<\/em><\/a> and is set to star as iconic queen Anne Boleyn in an upcoming mini-series for the U.K.’s Channel 5.\u00a0The Witcher: Blood Origin<\/em> will not be Turner-Smith’s first time on a Netflix series, as she previously starred in the\u00a0Nightflyers<\/em> series. She can also be seen in shows such as\u00a0The Last Ship<\/em>,\u00a0Mad Dogs<\/em>, and\u00a0True Blood<\/em> as well as upcoming films\u00a0After Yang<\/em> and\u00a0Without Remorse<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Declan de Barra, writer on\u00a0The Witcher<\/em>, will serve as showrunner for\u00a0Blood Origin<\/em>.\u00a0Andrzej Sapkowski, the author of the books\u00a0on which the shows\u00a0are based, will serve as the creative consultant for the prequel series.\u00a0Blood Origin<\/em> will not be the only\u00a0offshoot\u00a0of the popular original series. Netflix will also be releasing\u00a0The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf<\/em><\/a>, an animated spin-off film focusing on the origin story of Geralt’s mentor Vesemir.<\/p>\n

Filming on season two of\u00a0The Witcher<\/em> was originally delayed due to COVID-19. Production resumed\u00a0but was later suspended again when Cavill suffered a leg injury shortly before filming went on break for Christmas. While filming recently resumed again<\/a>, it’s unclear how Cavill’s interrupted training and the caution around his injury will impact\u00a0production going forward. Showrunners still hope to release the second season\u00a0in late 2021.<\/p>\n

The Witcher<\/em> season one is now available on Netflix while\u00a0Blood Origin<\/em>\u00a0has no announced release date.<\/p>\n
