It’s no secret that Atlus had a phenomenal 2020 with the massive success of\u00a0the\u00a0Persona 4 Golden<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>port and the release of\u00a0Persona 5 Royal<\/em>.\u00a0With\u00a0Persona 5 Royal\u00a0<\/em>selling over 1.4 million copies and\u00a0Persona 4 Golden\u00a0<\/em>selling over 500,000 copies on Steam, the series has brought the franchise worldwide recognition and mainstream attention. Sega, Atlus’s parent company, has taken note of\u00a0Persona’s\u00a0<\/em>success, and hopes to bring more Atlus ports, remasters, and remakes to a number of different platforms.<\/p>\n

Releasing its\u00a0annual online customer survey, Atlus asked fans if they wanted to see more franchises ported or remade on other platforms.\u00a0Receiving a record number of respondents,\u00a0the survey contained questions regarding Atlus franchises such as\u00a0Persona, Etrian Odyssey, Shin Megami Tensei,\u00a0<\/em>and more. Following the success of\u00a0the PC port of\u00a0Persona 4 Golden,<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>it’ll be interesting to see what other Atlus games will make a comeback as ports.<\/p>\n

With the massive success of\u00a0Persona 4 Golden\u00a0<\/em>on Steam and the popularity that\u00a0Persona 5 Royal\u00a0<\/em>has generated in 2020<\/a>, older\u00a0Persona\u00a0<\/em>games seem like the most obvious choice for Atlus ports and remakes. Though\u00a0Revelations: Persona\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0the\u00a0Persona 2\u00a0<\/em>duology are fantastic games in their own right,\u00a0Persona 3\u00a0<\/em>is the entry which established the social\u00a0simulation mechanics that define the series. As a result, it’s most likely that\u00a0Persona 3\u00a0<\/em>will appear as the next port or remaster from Atlus.<\/p>\n

The recent survey from Atlus seems to imply that they favor the Nintendo Switch and PC as platforms for future ports<\/a> and\u00a0Persona 3\u00a0<\/em>would be a perfect fit for either option. Although there are three versions of\u00a0Persona 3,\u00a0<\/em>the original can be ruled out as\u00a0Persona 3 FES\u00a0<\/em>is a direct upgrade with a new epilogue and content. Between\u00a0Persona 3 FES\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Persona 3 Portable, <\/em>it’d be a good idea\u00a0for Atlus to release a definitive edition combining the two as they each have\u00a0exclusive story and gameplay elements.<\/p>\n

A number of Persona\u00a0<\/em>spinoff games<\/a> could also be ported to the PC or Nintendo Switch.\u00a0The\u00a0Persona Q\u00a0<\/em>spinoff series could make an appearance considering its popularity on the Nintendo 3DS.\u00a0Fusing elements of\u00a0Atlus’s dungeon-crawling franchise\u00a0Etrian Odyssey\u00a0<\/em>together with\u00a0Persona,\u00a0<\/em>the\u00a0Persona Q\u00a0<\/em>series allows players to team up their favorite\u00a0Persona\u00a0<\/em>characters to explore labyrinths and map their layouts. The\u00a0Persona 4 Arena Ultimax<\/em>\u00a0spinoff\u00a0<\/em>could also make for a great port considering the\u00a0popularity of fighting games on the Nintendo Switch.<\/p>\n

The Shin Megami Tensei<\/em> series is going to have a big 2021<\/a> with Atlus announcing a port for\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 3,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0a new mainline game\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 5\u00a0<\/em>for the Nintendo Switch. With the popularity of the\u00a0Persona\u00a0<\/em>series, it’s inevitable that\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>gets its time to shine as the series that started it all. Though\u00a0Persona\u00a0<\/em>has overshadowed the series lately, Atlus porting\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>games would be effective in popularizing the series again.<\/p>\n

The most\u00a0obvious choices for ports of the\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei <\/em>series\u00a0would be the three\u00a0mainline Nintendo DS\/3DS games:\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, Shin Megami Tensei 4,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei 4: Apocalypse.\u00a0<\/em>The\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>series is known for its dark tone and\u00a0apocalyptic setting<\/a>\u00a0along with\u00a0its high difficulty. The exploration and combat mechanics would feel great on the Nintendo Switch if Atlus makes minor changes to the original Nintendo DS\/3DS dual screen features.<\/p>\n

It’s a little strange that a new\u00a0Etrian Odyssey\u00a0<\/em>game has not shown up on the Nintendo Switch given\u00a0the franchise’s commercial success and critical acclaim. While the last\u00a0Etrian Odyssey\u00a0<\/em>game hinted at the return of the series<\/a>, Atlus has yet to publish a new game. The Nintendo Switch is a fantastic platform for the series given its portability, and there’s currently a lack of great dungeon-crawlers available in the Nintendo eShop.<\/p>\n

However, even if the\u00a0Etrian Odyssey\u00a0<\/em>series doesn’t get a new game on the Nintendo Switch, the series has a lot of fantastic titles available to port. The biggest difficulty would be the transition to the docked Nintendo Switch<\/a> as the mapping feature of\u00a0Etrian Odyssey\u00a0<\/em>relied heavily on the Nintendo DS\/3DS’s touchscreen capabilities. Nonetheless, Etrian Odyssey<\/em> is a fan favorite series from Atlus, and porting the dungeon-crawling series to the Nintendo Switch could attract a lot of newcomers.<\/p>\n

Developer Vanillaware has worked closely with Atlus in the past to deliver two fantastic ARPG titles:\u00a0Odin Sphere\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Dragon’s Crown.<\/em>\u00a0Odin Sphere\u00a0<\/em>was heavily driven by a unique narrative experience, while\u00a0Dragon’s Crown\u00a0<\/em>offered a fantastic multiplayer experience reminiscent of loot-based ARPGs like\u00a0Diablo.<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>Both games featured a distinct artstyle that Vanillaware has become known for, and\u00a0enjoyed a moderate amount of success.<\/p>\n

Odin Sphere\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Dragon’s Crown\u00a0<\/em>would both be great ports for the Nintendo Switch or PC given their mechanics. Both games would also be fairly easy to port, and the popularity of ARPG games, especially loot-based ones, have been skyrocketing lately.\u00a0Odin Sphere\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Dragon’s Crown\u00a0<\/em>both appeared on the Atlus customer survey so there’s a good chance that they will appear as ports even if they are overshadowed by the\u00a0Persona\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Shin Megami Tensei\u00a0<\/em>series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Although the\u00a0Atlus customer survey included a lot of potential ports and remakes, the beloved\u00a0Trauma Center\u00a0<\/em>series unfortunately didn’t show up<\/a>. While the original\u00a0game\u00a0Trauma Center: Under the Knife\u00a0<\/em>underperformed in Japan, it sold extremely well in North America and Europe. As a result, the series continued with a Wii remake,\u00a0Trauma Center: Second Opinion,\u00a0<\/em>and a DS sequel,\u00a0Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Trauma Center\u00a0<\/em>games combine surgery-based simulation with\u00a0a story told in the form of a visual novel. Using the touchscreen capabilities of the Nintendo DS, players\u00a0would perform operations and utilize surgical tools. Like the\u00a0Etrian Odyssey\u00a0<\/em>series,\u00a0Trauma Center’s\u00a0<\/em>reliance on a touchscreen would require Atlus to make some changes before porting it to the Nintendo Switch. However, the Wii remake,\u00a0Trauma Center: Second Opinion,\u00a0<\/em>has already demonstrated the capabilities of the series\u00a0using motion\u00a0tracking and the Joy-Cons would be a perfect fit<\/a>\u00a0for potential\u00a0Trauma Center\u00a0<\/em>ports.<\/p>\n

The success of\u00a0the PC port for\u00a0Persona 4 Golden\u00a0<\/em>has reignited speculation<\/a> amongst fans on which Atlus series will receive remasters or ports next. With the release of the 2020 online customer survey, it seems that more and more classic Atlus games will show up on the Nintendo Switch or PC in the future.\u00a0With a record number of respondents giving their opinions,\u00a0this hopefully\u00a0means that\u00a0Persona 4 Golden\u00a0<\/em>was just the beginning\u00a0in Sega’s decision\u00a0of porting more Atlus series.<\/p>\n

Persona 4 Golden<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>is available on Steam for PC.<\/p>\n
