Dynasty Warriors<\/em>-style spin-offs have been doing wonders for some of the most beloved video game franchises recently.\u00a0The Legend of Zelda<\/em> fans got their fill with\u00a0Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/em>, which functionally serves as a prequel to\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em>. Now it’s\u00a0Persona<\/em> that’s getting the Musou treatment with\u00a0Persona 5 Strikers<\/em><\/strong>, functionally a direct sequel to the original\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>.\u00a0Strikers<\/em> serves as a welcome return, and proper send-off, to the Phantom Thieves’ adventures. Taking place a few months after the original\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>‘s ending, players embark on a whole new journey into the metaverse across Japan.<\/p>\n

It’s not unusual for\u00a0Persona\u00a0<\/em>to utilize spin-offs to serve as pseudo-sequels or continuations to each respective mainline game. However,\u00a0Persona 5 Strikers<\/em><\/a> is a little different compared to examples like\u00a0Persona 4 Arena\u00a0<\/em>or the\u00a0Dancing<\/em> spin-offs previously. Whereas those examples took place in the same world in the future, those spin-offs weren’t dedicated sequels in the way that\u00a0Persona 5 Strikers<\/em> is. However,\u00a0for fans of the content in Persona 5 Royal<\/em>,\u00a0Strikers<\/em> is missing a lot of the content from the definitive\u00a0version of\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>.\u00a0There is a reason for that, as the canonicity of\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>,\u00a0Royal<\/em>, and each games’ relationship to\u00a0Strikers<\/em> is important to distinguish.<\/p>\n

Persona 5 Strikers<\/em> is the first entry in the franchise that actually resembles a true-to-form sequel, rather than just a spin-off in a different genre.\u00a0Of course there was\u00a0Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight<\/em>, one of the many Persona\u00a0<\/em>rhythm game<\/a> spin-offs, but obviously that wasn’t anything close to a canon sequel. Previous\u00a0Persona<\/em> games not only had\u00a0Dancing<\/em> counterparts, but\u00a0Persona 4\u00a0<\/em>had the\u00a0Arena<\/em>\u00a0and Arena Ultimax\u00a0<\/em>fighting game spin-offs, which also featured\u00a0Persona 3\u00a0<\/em>characters. That’s without even counting the\u00a0Persona Q<\/em> spin-offs, which are very clearly separate from any\u00a0Persona<\/em> canon, acting more as fan service for the hardcore\u00a0Persona<\/em> fans.<\/p>\n

This time,\u00a0however,\u00a0Persona 5 Strikers<\/em> breaks the mold, and is the closest thing to a\u00a0“Persona 5-2<\/em>” if there ever was one. On a surface level,\u00a0Persona 5 Strikers<\/em> certainly looks like the action-infused\u00a0Dynasty Warriors<\/em> games that its foundation is based on, but underneath the gameplay systems are much closer to\u00a0Persona 5<\/em> proper.\u00a0Strikers<\/em> plays like a\u00a0traditional\u00a0Persona<\/em> RPG: players collect and fuse Personas, learn new magic skills, target enemies’ weaknesses, and combine attacks together to optimize damage. Everything about the gameplay resembles the original\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>, just at a much faster pace<\/a> for combat among some idiosyncrasies in between.<\/p>\n

However, for\u00a0Persona 5 Royal<\/em> fans, there’s an important caveat to\u00a0Strikers<\/em>‘ existence as a sequel. Specifically,\u00a0Persona 5 Strikers<\/em> is a direct sequel to the events of\u00a0Persona 5<\/em><\/a>, not\u00a0Persona 5 Royal<\/em>. The events of the third semester, certain characters, and certain events throughout the main game are not considered canon to\u00a0Strikers<\/em>. Along those lines, Phantom Thieves like Kasumi and Akechi are not featured in\u00a0Strikers<\/em> as well. While it’s unfortunate considering\u00a0Persona 5 Royal<\/em> can be\u00a0quantified as\u00a0the definitive version of the fifth entry,\u00a0Strikers<\/em>\u00a0originally released in Japan (known as Persona 5 Scramble<\/em>) before\u00a0Royal<\/em>, so the latest game is not canon to\u00a0Strikers<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Granted, the actual canonicity between all games hasn’t been officially denoted, but\u00a0Strikers<\/em> is specifically\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>‘s “follow-up story.”<\/a> While it’s unfortunate that now-iconic Phantom Thieves like Kasumi\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Akechi don’t get to join Joker on his summer road trip, the game was likely far enough in development before\u00a0Royal<\/em> began. Atlus does maintain the mantra that “anyone” can enjoy\u00a0Persona 5 Strikers<\/em>, regardless of their knowledge of\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>, even though that’s only technically true. The game does call back and rehash notions from the original\u00a0Persona 5<\/em> in a way that makes sense, but can also be repetitive for\u00a0existing\u00a0Persona 5<\/em> fans.<\/p>\n

In truth, the players who will get the most from\u00a0Persona 5 Strikers<\/em> are the ones who’ve played and enjoyed\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>, whether it’s the base game or\u00a0Royal<\/em>. It is a shame that aspects from\u00a0Royal<\/em> won’t transfer into\u00a0Strikers<\/em>, but it doesn’t interrupt the game’s momentum in a tangible way.\u00a0Persona 5 Strikers<\/em> is a love letter just as much as it is an exciting twist on the original\u00a0Persona<\/em> framework, and even without\u00a0Royal<\/em>‘s content, it’s still a worthy successor to both versions of\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>.<\/p>\n
