The next-gen console upgrade for 505 Games\u2019 Control: Ultimate Edition <\/em><\/strong>will become available for the PS5 and Xbox Series X\/S on February 2<\/a>. The Ultimate Edition <\/em>upgrade will feature two modes: Performance Mode, which offers 60fps and 4K output, and Graphics Mode, which lowers the game\u2019s frames per second to 30 in exchange for the transparency and reflections provided by ray tracing.<\/p>\n

505 recently updated their support page for Control: Ultimate Edition<\/em><\/a> and hinted that the game will make use of the unique features of the PS5 DualSense controller. While specifics on what that entails are minimal, the game will at least offer \u201csupport for vibrations and triggers.\u201d One can assume that this means Control: Ultimate Edition <\/em>will support the controller\u2019s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, though this isn\u2019t clearly spelled out.<\/p>\n

In addition to the somewhat vague details about DualSense controller support, Control: Ultimate Edition <\/em>will also make use of the PS5\u2019s Activity Cards<\/a>, which allow players to jump to specific sections of a game from the console\u2019s home screen. The PS5\u2019s Help feature, which provides gamers with videos and other gameplay assistance directly from the console, will also be supported.<\/p>\n

Control: Ultimate Edition <\/em>has experienced a bit of controversy since its announcement in August 2020. The version is essentially a repackaging of the Control: Deluxe Edition <\/em>and offers the exact same content: the base game and all DLC<\/a>. Despite this, players who already own the game, including the Deluxe Edition<\/em>, can only access the game\u2019s free next-gen upgrade if they purchase the Ultimate Edition. <\/em><\/p>\n

505 Games explained that the next-gen upgrade was locked to Control: Ultimate Edition <\/em>because technical concerns made it impossible to upgrade other versions of the game. This statement later seemed to be proven untrue when, in September 2020, owners of Control: Deluxe Edition<\/em> found themselves temporarily upgraded<\/a> to the Ultimate Edition<\/em> and then immediately downgraded again. This made it seem that providing the upgrade for owners of other versions of the game was as simple as flipping a switch, despite what 505 Games had said.<\/p>\n

To make matters worse, one of the titles coming to PlayStation Plus in February 2021 is Control: Ultimate Edition<\/em><\/a>. Some PlayStation owners now have a previous version of Control <\/em>that they were told couldn\u2019t be upgraded and the Ultimate Edition<\/em> that they purchased solely for the upgrade, only to realize that a few months\u2019 wait would have gotten them the next-gen upgrade for free with PlayStation Plus. And Sony is not keen on issuing refunds, even to those who bought the game recently.<\/p>\n

Control: Ultimate Edition <\/em><\/strong>is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and next-gen upgrades become available on PS5 and Xbox Series X on February 2, 2021.<\/p>\n
