This certainly isn&#8217;t a new feature of gaming, as it was the key selling-points of\u00a0numerous <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/games-like-grim-fandango-suggestions\/\">80s and 90s graphic adventures<\/a>, but it&#8217;s fair to say that the choices in many games today far more expansive than ever before.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/far-cry-6-heavy-open-world-games-play-waiting\/\">10 Story-Heavy Open-World Games To Play While Waiting For Far Cry 6<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the popularity of decision-making in video games has meant that many developers and publishers have tried to shoehorn decision making into their games, despite the choices having\u00a0little to no impact on the direction of the story.\u00a0Thankfully, there are numerous games\u00a0where decision making isn&#8217;t just a gimmick but\u00a0a key, in-depth feature. The games on this list all offer players a <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/pc-rpgs-impactful-dialogue-choices\/\">plethora of choices<\/a> to make in their games, many of which can completely change the direction of the story or a character&#8217;s arc.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Heavy Rain<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Heavy-Rain-Ethan-and-Shaun-Mars.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/heavy-rain\/\">Heavy Rain<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>released exclusively on the PlayStation 3 in 2010 and was a pioneer in bringing decision-heavy games back into the mainstream market. Sadly, the game is often dismissed today, as it&#8217;s hard to deny that many of its features have aged poorly. It&#8217;s worth noting, however, that many of the games that people\u00a0point to as being superior,\u00a0likely wouldn&#8217;t have existed if it wasn&#8217;t for\u00a0Quantic Dream&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Heavy Rain.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Heavy Rain\u00a0<\/em>performed extremely well with critics when it was initially released, exemplified by its impressive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/game\/playstation-3\/heavy-rain\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Metascore of 87<\/a>. The game also won numerous awards, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interactive.org\/awards\/award_category_details.asp?idAward=2011&amp;idGameAwardType=108\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Outstanding Innovation in Gaming from the\u00a0Interactive Achievement Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>The Walking Dead<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/the-walking-dead-clementine-aj-1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/the-walking-dead\/\"><em>The Walking\u00a0<\/em><\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/the-walking-dead\/\">Dead<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is an episodic graphic adventure based on the comic book series of the same name. Unlike the popular graphic adventures of the 80s and 90s like <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Grim%20Fandango\/\">Grim Fandango<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/The%20Secret%20of%20Monkey%20Island\/\"><em>The Secret of Monkey Island<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0Telltale Games&#8217;\u00a0<em>The Walking Dead\u00a0<\/em>has no puzzles. The\u00a0game&#8217;s lack of puzzles certainly isn&#8217;t a drawback, as it puts the entire spotlight on the game&#8217;s strongest feature, its narrative.<\/p>\n<p>Much like\u00a0<em>Heavy Rain<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Walking Dead\u00a0<\/em>picked up numerous awards upon release, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.destructoid.com\/the-winner-of-destructoid-s-game-of-the-year-2012-240607.phtml\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Destructoid&#8217;s Game of the Year<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/tech\/gaming\/2013\/02\/08\/journey-walking-dead-dice-awards\/1900919\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Outstanding Achievement in\u00a0Story from the D.I.C.E. Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Dragon Age: Origins<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/dragon-age-origins-anora.jpeg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Initially released in 2009 by the AAA team of BioWare and Electronic Arts,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Dragon%20Age:%20Origins\/\">Dragon Age: Origins<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is, as the name suggests, the first entry in the\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Dragon%20Age\/\">Dragon Age<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>franchise.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/rpgs-most-romance-options\/\">10 RPGs With The Most Romance Options<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The role-playing game was a spiritual successor to\u00a0BioWare&#8217;s critically acclaimed\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Baldur's%20Gate\/\">Baldur&#8217;s Gate<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>series and features a similar fantasy setting. In terms of decision making, <em>Dragon Age: Origins\u00a0<\/em>features a unique approval system.\u00a0The player&#8217;s choices and actions throughout the game will affect the approval rating of companions, which can significantly affect their effectiveness in combat.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Fallout: New Vegas<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/fallout-new-vegas.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>2010&#8217;s<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Fallout:%20New%20Vegas\/\"><em> Fallout: New Vegas<\/em><\/a>\u00a0was developed by Obsidian Entertainment, unlike the 3rd and 4th\u00a0<em>Fallout\u00a0<\/em>games which were developed by Bethesda.<\/p>\n<p>There was little hype around\u00a0<em>Fallout: New Vegas\u00a0<\/em>before its release, as many players thought that the game would simply be a glorified DLC of\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Fallout%203\/\">Fallout 3<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>The doubters were soon silenced though, as\u00a0<em>Fallout: New Vegas\u00a0<\/em>has since become one of gaming&#8217;s most beloved modern RPGs. In many ways, the game was a curse to\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Fallout%204\/\">Fallout 4<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>as\u00a0<em>New Vegas<\/em>&#8216; incredible freedom of choice <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/open-world-games-better-as-linear-action-games-mass-effect-andromeda-sniper-ghost-warrior-3-far-cry-5\/\">made\u00a0<em>Fallout 4\u00a0<\/em>look almost linear in comparison<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Life Is Strange<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Life-is-Strange-max-and-chloe.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Similar to the aforementioned\u00a0<em>The Walking Dead,\u00a0<\/em>Dontnod Entertainment&#8217;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Life%20Is%20Strange\/\">Life Is Strange<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is a modern graphic adventure that was released in an episodic format. Unlike Telltale Games&#8217;\u00a0<em>The Walking Dead<\/em>\u00a0though,\u00a0<em>Life Is Strange\u00a0<\/em>implements <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/hardest-puzzle-games\/\">puzzle-solving<\/a> into its gameplay.<\/p>\n<p>Dontnod Entertainment picked up an incredible amount of awards for <em>Life is Strange<\/em>&#8216;s story, including Use Of Narrative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcvuk.com\/business-news\/publishing\/develop-awards-2015-the-winners-revealed\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">from the\u00a0Develop Industry Excellence Awards<\/a>,\u00a0Excellence and Innovation in Digital Storytelling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peabodyawards.com\/stories\/story\/peabody-awards-and-facebook-launch-new-futures-of-media-award\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">from the\u00a0Peabody-Facebook Futures of Media Awards<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalspy.com\/videogames\/a789770\/fallout-4-wins-game-of-the-year-at-game-baftas\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BAFTA for Story<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/witcher-3-wild-hunt-ps4-xbox.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/The%20Witcher%203\/\">The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was released in 2015 and put CD Projekt Red on the map as one of the gaming industry&#8217;s most esteemed development teams. CD Projekt Red&#8217;s game was particularly admired for its visuals, which truly showed off the hardware of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-looking-games-high-end-pcs-ranked\/\">made owners of high-end PC&#8217;s the envy of the gaming industry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt<\/em>&#8216;s visuals are just one of its many impressive features, however, as the game is also beloved for\u00a0the often morally charged decisions that it frequently demands the player to make. The &#8216;Bloody Baron&#8217; quest is notable for this in particular, and it has become one of gaming&#8217;s most memorable side quests.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Mass Effect 2<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Mass-Effect-2-Garrus-Romance.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The second BioWare to appear on this list,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Mass%20Effect%202\/\">Mass Effect 2<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>took the winning formula from the original game and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/video-game-best-worst-sequel\/\">raised\u00a0it to a whole new level<\/a>. Similar to the first game,\u00a0<em>Mass Effect 2\u00a0<\/em>tells an incredible story centered around sci-fi war and\u00a0politics but it&#8217;s the personal relationships\u00a0developed along the way that are the game&#8217;s true narrative.<\/p>\n<p><em>Mass Effects 2\u00a0<\/em>is remembered in particular for its <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/every-assassins-creed-final-story-mission\/\">final mission<\/a>, commonly known as the Suicide Mission, which has become recognized as one of the finest in gaming history.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Detroit: Become Human<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Detroit-Become-Human-Connor-And-Hank.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>BioWare isn&#8217;t the only developer to have two games on this list, as\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/Detroit:%20Become%20Human\/\">Detroit: Become Human<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was created by\u00a0<em>Heavy Rain<\/em>&#8216;s developer\u00a0Quantic Dream.
