After being released in September out of early access,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/hades\/\">Hades<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>was met with universal critical acclaim and a massive following. Winning multiple awards at the<em>\u00a0<\/em>Golden Joystick\u00a0Awards<em>\u00a0<\/em>and the Game Awards 2020,\u00a0<em>Hades<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>helped the roguelike genre generate mainstream attention with its emphasis on narrative.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/disco-elysium-hades-death-failure-good\/\">In\u00a0<em>Hades,\u00a0<\/em>while the player will often die<\/a>, they also continue to receive buffs, treasures, and weapons\u00a0making subsequent runs a little easier. This mechanic along with the use of procedurally generated rooms and enemies define the roguelike genre. While\u00a0<em>Hades\u00a0<\/em>has undoubtedly become the new face of the genre, there\u00a0are a number of fantastic indie roguelikes\u00a0that players should not miss out on.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/hades-when-playstation-xbox\/\">Hades Needs to Come to More Platforms<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/binding-of-isaac.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Originally released in 2011,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/binding-of-isaac-repentance-dlc-january-2021-release-date\/\"><em>Binding of Isaac\u00a0<\/em>is perhaps the most influential\u00a0indie roguelike<\/a> as\u00a0the series would go on to sell over 5 million copies and renew attention in the genre. Inspired by the biblical story of\u00a0Isaac,<em>\u00a0<\/em>players control and navigate the PC Isaac as he fights his way through a monster-infested basement\u00a0after overhearing his mother&#8217;s intention to sacrifice him. Featuring procedurally generated dungeons inspired by\u00a0the original\u00a0<em>Legend of Zelda<\/em>\u00a0game,<em>\u00a0<\/em>players collect powerups and items in order to defeat enemies and bosses.\u00a0If Isaac died, players would have to start over\u00a0in a newly-generated dungeon, and the roguelike nature of\u00a0<em>Binding of Isaac\u00a0<\/em>encouraged multiple playthroughs\u00a0and provided players with an opportunity to slowly improve over time.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, developer Edmund McMillen would go on to remake the game as\u00a0<em>Binding of Isaac: Rebirth<\/em><i>\u00a0<\/i>in 2014 after being limited by the\u00a0Adobe Flash platform. Featuring a visual overhaul, multiple ports, additional content, and gameplay features,\u00a0<em>Binding of Isaac: Rebirth\u00a0<\/em>was released to critical acclaim like its predecessor. Fans of\u00a0<em>Hades\u00a0<\/em>looking to replicate the excitement of slowly learning a game&#8217;s mechanics through continuous playthroughs should look no further than\u00a0<em>Binding of Isaac: Rebirth.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/ftl-faster-than-light.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Alongside\u00a0<em>Binding of Isaac,\u00a0<\/em>2012&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-roguelike-rpgs-ranked\/\"><em>FTL: Faster Than Light\u00a0<\/em>helped popularize the genre<\/a> in the indie scene\u00a0by incorporating different gameplay elements\u00a0from\u00a0traditional roguelikes. Based\u00a0on tabletop board games,\u00a0<em>FTL\u00a0<\/em>places players in charge of a spaceship and its crew while avoiding a pursuing rebel fleet. The spaceship has a variety of systems such as engines, weapons, shields, med bays, and more that require players to micromanage effectively while they traverse through randomly generated waypoints. Over time, the spaceship will gain additional crewmates, money, and enhancements, but\u00a0if the player loses in combat, they lose their progress and must restart from scratch.<\/p>\n<p>Although\u00a0<em>FTL\u00a0<\/em>features roguelike elements, it also integrates tactical combat, management mechanics, and a sci-fi setting.\u00a0This unique blend of different styles has aged gracefully, and to this day,\u00a0no other roguelike game feels like\u00a0<em>FTL.\u00a0<\/em>It&#8217;s unforgiving in its difficulty, yet extremely rewarding once players manage to get the hang of its mechanics. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dark-souls-beginner-challenges\/\">Similar to games in the\u00a0<em>Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>franchise<\/a>,\u00a0<em>FTL\u00a0<\/em>requires patience and a learning curve from players but will also reward them well once they learn from their mistakes. For\u00a0<em>Hades\u00a0<\/em>fans\u00a0looking to find a more difficult roguelike with a learning curve,\u00a0<em>FTL\u00a0<\/em>is a great place to start.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/dead-cells-cover-art.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Hades\u00a0fans looking for an indie roguelike with a combat system similar to\u00a0<em>Hades\u00a0<\/em>should give\u00a0<em>Dead Cells\u00a0<\/em>a try.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dead-cells-fatal-falls-dlc-gameplay\/\">Often described as a &#8220;roguevania&#8221;,\u00a0<em>Dead Cells<\/em><\/a><i>\u00a0<\/i>combines the procedurally generated levels\u00a0and permadeath mechanics of roguelikes together with the action platforming elements of Metroidvania games. Originally released in 2018, players take control of a clump of cells that can occupy the body of a prisoner in order to\u00a0fight their way out of a dungeon. Much like\u00a0<em>Hades,\u00a0<\/em><em>Dead Cells\u00a0<\/em>puts a heavy emphasis on combat mechanics such as dodging and pattern recognition.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand,\u00a0<em>Dead Cells\u00a0<\/em>is\u00a0arguably more punishing than\u00a0<em>Hades.\u00a0<\/em>With only a few minor upgrades that carry over in different runs,\u00a0<em>Dead Cells\u00a0<\/em>is fast-paced with a focus on twitch gameplay\u00a0and combos. If players aren&#8217;t careful, they could easily die within a few hits and be forced to start a new run. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dead-cells-dlc-fatal-falls-2021\/\">the progression value of\u00a0<em>Dead Cells\u00a0<\/em>is arguably much better<\/a> than\u00a0<em>Hades,\u00a0<\/em>and players will get much more out of replays despite its limited story.\u00a0<em>Dead Cells\u00a0<\/em>is a great roguelike for players who enjoyed the combat system of\u00a0<em>Hades\u00a0<\/em>and are looking for an even greater challenge.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/metacritic-best-switch-games-2020\/\">Metacritic Reveals the 10 Highest Scoring Switch Games of 2020<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/children-of-morta-character-art.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>On the other hand, if\u00a0<em>Hades\u00a0<\/em>fans are looking for a more <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/children-of-morta-apan-update\/\">story-driven experience in\u00a0a roguelike title,\u00a0<em>Children of Morta<\/em><\/a><i>\u00a0<\/i>is their best bet. Featuring an entire family of heroes\u00a0called the Bergsons, players\u00a0must help them overcome a supernatural force known as the Corruption. As players progress through the game, they unlock new family members who each have their own playstyles, and the family must traverse through procedurally generated dungeons defeating enemies and bosses along the way.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most interesting features of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/children-morta-adds-animal-themed-dlc-charity\/\"><em>Children of Morta\u00a0<\/em>is its narrative experience<\/a>. Not only do players get to witness narrative changes and dialogue at the end of their runs, but there&#8217;s also procedural narrative events which can offer unique stories on different playthroughs.\u00a0Each Bergson family member has their own individual story which serves to strengthen the overall narrative arc. Along with sidequests,\u00a0<em>Children of Morta\u00a0<\/em>feels like one of the rare roguelikes to feature a fleshed out world and narrative.\u00a0<em>Hades\u00a0<\/em>fans will find plenty to love in\u00a0<em>Children of Morta,\u00a0<\/em>especially if they enjoyed the emphasis on story.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/spelunky-2-logoless.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The original <em>Spelunky<\/em> was released in 2008 and was one of the first games that utilized roguelike elements in a side-scrolling platformer. Players take control of a cave spelunker who explores procedurally generated caves while collecting treasures, fighting enemies, and saving damsels. Although\u00a0<em>Spelunky\u00a0<\/em>isn&#8217;t as difficult as other roguelikes, it still features frequent deaths, a lack of checkpoints, and a focus on discovery of mechanics. An enhanced version of\u00a0<em>Spelunky\u00a0<\/em>was released in 2013 and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/spelunky-spelunky-2-switch-ports-announcement\/\">its sequel,\u00a0<em>Spelunky 2,\u00a0<\/em>was released in 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the original\u00a0<em>Spelunky\u00a0<\/em>is a\u00a0fantastic game, it&#8217;s likely that\u00a0<em>Hades\u00a0<\/em>fans will enjoy its sequel a little bit more with the addition of lore and backstories for the characters. However,\u00a0<em>Spelunky\u00a0<\/em>does differentiate itself from\u00a0<em>Hades\u00a0<\/em>with its focus on the platformer mechanics. Much of the game revolves around avoiding traps, and the combat is very basic in order to emphasize the platforming aspects. In terms of how\u00a0<em>Spelunky\u00a0<\/em>feels, it&#8217;s more akin to the physics of the\u00a0<em>Super Mario\u00a0<\/em>series.
