In spite of what Funimation\u2019s English dub might push, <a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/dragon-ball-z\">Dragon Ball<\/a> is about the pure pursuit of martial arts, with any heroics the main cast committing more a natural circumstance of their world than any real desire to do good (not that Goku doesn\u2019t want to fight for the planet he cares about.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dragon-ball-characters-almost-killed-goku\/\">Dragon Ball: 10 Characters Who Almost Killed Goku<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/dragon-ball-fighterz\">Dragon Ball<\/a> isn\u2019t a world populated by superheroes, but by martial artists \u2013 and selfish ones at that. Goku is a good guy who will do what\u2019s best for the Earth when push comes to shove, but he doesn\u2019t always do the right thing. Sometimes intentionally. Goku cares about the consequences of his actions, but not more if it gets in the way of a good fight \u2013\u00a0a fact he\u2019s made clear time and time again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Fighting Majunior Alone<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Goku-vs-Piccolo.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The logical thing to do in the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai would have been for everyone to gang up on Piccolo Junior and defeat him without the framing of a tournament \u2013 but that doesn\u2019t make for compelling storytelling. Goku doesn\u2019t want to do the right thing here: he wants to win the Tenkaichi Budokai.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After losing the 21st and 22nd in their final matches, Goku isn\u2019t about to let Piccolo\u2019s quest for world domination prevent what may be his last chance at victory. Goku turns down Tenshinhan\u2019s help, lets Majunior get a free hit in when God interrupts their fight, and actually makes sure never to leave the arena \u2013\u00a0even after Piccolo\u2019s obliterated it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Letting Vegeta Go<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Krillin-sparing-Vegeta.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make no mistake, Goku does not let Vegeta go out of the kindness of his heart. Goku even makes it clear during the Namek arc that he outright <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hates <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vegeta. But he does love fighting and Vegeta gave him the single best fight of his life. When Krillin is about to kill Vegeta with Yajirobe\u2019s sword, Goku uses telepathy to beg his best friend to reconsider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hungry to fight Vegeta again and surpass him, Goku convinces Krillin to spare the Saiyan. While this is a completely selfish move on Goku\u2019s part, Vegeta misreads the act and goes on living his life believing that Goku saw good in him. This ends up playing an important role in Vegeta\u2019s development later on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Sparing The Ginyu Force<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Goku-vs-Recoome-1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After discovering he\u2019s a Saiyan, Goku goes to some lengths to make himself seem more like an Earthling. Notably, he stops killing his opponents. While this was a mercy he learned after training with God, it only becomes more pronounced during the Saiyan arc \u2013\u00a0notably in the presence of Vegeta.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dragon-ball-every-tournament-winner-in-franchise\/\">Dragon Ball: Every Character Who\u2019s Won A Tournament In The Franchise<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goku\u2019s inability to kill in Vegeta\u2019s presence results in him sparing the Ginyu Force, mercenaries who were about to murder his son if he hadn\u2019t intervened. Goku\u2019s relationship with killing changes gradually over the course of <a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/dragon-ball-z-kinect\">Dragon Ball<\/a>, but his sparing of the Ginyu Force feels undeserved given the context.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Trying To Let Frieza Go<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Super-Saiyan-Goku.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is absolutely zero reason Goku should have tried sparing Frieza after everything he did. Frieza committed literal genocide, tried blowing up a planet, and killed Goku\u2019s best friend right in front of him. It\u2019s certainly powerful that Goku wants to exert his cruelty and spare Frieza so he lives with the humiliation for the rest of his life, but it\u2019s not the right thing to do by any means. Goku should have murdered Frieza the first chance he got.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Letting Dr. Gero Build The Androids<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Goku-vs-Android-19-and-Dr-Gero.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Future Trunks comes back in time to warn Goku of the Androids that have ruined his timeline. In three years, two Artificial Humans will begin laying waste to the Earth \u2013 and Goku won\u2019t be there to fight back. Instead of heeding Bulma\u2019s very wise advice to use the Dragon Balls to divine Gero\u2019s location and hunt him down before he can become a threat, Goku champions the idea of training.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For what it\u2019s worth, Krillin brings up the very good point that having a common enemy in the Androids keeps Vegeta from turning his sights on Earth yet again, but the Androids end up doing considerable damage when they do arrive. By the time Goku\u2019s dead, Android 16\u2019s crushed, and several islands worth of people have been killed, it\u2019s hard not to feel like Goku didn\u2019t make a mistake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Refusing To Tell Gohan His Plan<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Super-Saiyan-Goku-and-Gohan.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Goku brings Gohan into the Room of Spirit and Time during the Cell arc, he tells his son that he plans on making Gohan much stronger than himself. This starts the build up to Gohan becoming the main character during the Cell Games, but he doesn\u2019t quite understand what Goku is doing here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goku isn\u2019t just training Gohan, he\u2019s deliberately crafting Gohan into the key to defeating Cell. Unfortunately, Goku never explains this to Gohan. His son just sees their training session as father\/son bonding (albeit with his struggles), never piecing together that Goku <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isn\u2019t <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">planning on beating Cell until it\u2019s too late.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Giving Cell A Senzu Bean<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Cell-Senzu-Bean.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the same token, Goku giving Cell a Senzu Bean only rings as poorly as it does because of his lack of explanation. Gohan has no clue what\u2019s going on. He just watched his father go all out fighting Cell only to forfeit, and now Goku\u2019s tossing Cell a Senzu just as Gohan\u2019s about to fight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dragon-ball-z-movies-ripped-off-anime\/\">Dragon Ball Z: 10 Times The Movies Ripped Off The Anime<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Goku\u2019s mind, he\u2019s making sure Cell understands that Gohan is the real deal \u2013 a strategy that ensures Cell doesn\u2019t just slaughter Gohan off-guard to get back to fighting Goku. In Gohan\u2019s mind, his father has fed him to the wolves for no conceivable reason and he understandably doesn\u2019t want to fight back.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Fighting Majin Vegeta<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Goku-vs-Majin-Vegeta.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vegeta shouldn\u2019t have let his ego turn him Majin, but Goku also should have handled the consequences with more grace. Threatening Kaioshin with his life is a dramatic move, but what is Goku gaining out of his fight with Vegeta? He\u2019s not in it to beat him since he doesn\u2019t turn Super Saiyan 3, and it even seems like he\u2019s enjoying himself at multiple points.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking into account that this fight is directly feeding Majin Buu\u2019s revival \u2013\u00a0a fact both Goku and Vegeta understand \u2013\u00a0it\u2019s obvious why both Saiyans feel so responsible for everything that happens at the arc\u2019s end. They both made a mistake in fighting each other, but Goku should have tried talking Vegeta down earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Cutting His Fight With Fat Buu Short<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Super-Saiyan-3-Goku-.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virtually every single character in the cast dies by the end of the Majin Buu arc. Between Fat Buu\u2019s rampaging through cities, Evil Buu\u2019s genocide attack, and Pure Buu quite literally obliterating the Earth, there are very few characters left alive by the time the final battle starts. And it\u2019s kind of Goku\u2019s fault.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond Goku being responsible for Majin Buu\u2019s revival, he claims that he could have actually defeated Fat Buu the first time he fought. Judging by his conversation with Piccolo, Goku wasn\u2019t even trying \u2013 and going off his fight with Pure Buu later on, Goku would have actually won without the stamina drain of a living body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Abandoning His Family Without Two Weeks Notice<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Goku-and-Uub.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goku flying off with Uub is an often criticized story beat, but it\u2019s the perfect note to end Goku\u2019s martial arts journey: <a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/dragon-ball-xenoverse\">Dragon Ball<\/a> ends with its main character returning to the Tenkaichi Budokai and taking on a student, in turn finally becoming a genuine martial arts master. It\u2019s still a pretty rude move on Goku\u2019s part, though.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like with the Cell Games, this is another example of Goku doing something (narratively) reasonable that becomes unreasonable due to his lack of complete explanation.
