A combination of the Metroid\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Castlevania\u00a0<\/em>game series, Metroidvania games are typically side-scrollers with a heavy emphasis on exploration and character progression. They often feature interconnected maps with obstacles that must be unlocked through items or upgrades.<\/p>\n

With the\u00a0huge success of\u00a0Hollow Knight\u00a0<\/em>and the anticipation behind\u00a0Hollow Knight: Silksong,<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>fans looking for similar games should delve into the Metroidvania subgenre. Though\u00a0Hollow Knight’s\u00a0<\/em>incredibly detailed art style and worldbuilding sets it apart from most games,\u00a0there are a number of fantastic Metroidvania games that fans should not miss out on.<\/p>\n

Players control a small guardian spirit named Ori, and must navigate\u00a0through platforming sections and puzzles to save the forest of Nibel.\u00a0As players acquire different abilities and upgrades for Ori,\u00a0previously inaccessible areas\u00a0become unlocked,\u00a0emphasizing backtracking and exploration.\u00a0The intricate level design of the series has received praise and should be appealing for\u00a0Hollow Knight\u00a0<\/em>fans who loved\u00a0its worldbuilding.<\/p>\n

The original\u00a0Ori and the Blind Forest<\/em>\u00a0was both a critical and commercial success which allowed Moon Studios to develop a sequel,\u00a0Ori and the Will of Wisps<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>in 2020. Conceived by former Castlevania\u00a0<\/em>producer\u00a0Koji Igarashi, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night\u00a0<\/em>was a new Metroidvania game created after his departure from Konami in 2014. After founding a new indie studio called ArtPlay, Igarashi hosted a Kickstarter campaign, where\u00a0Castlevania<\/em> fans\u00a0would help raise over $5 million for the development of\u00a0Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night\u00a0<\/em>allows players to take control of Miriam<\/a>, a young girl cursed with demonic powers. Much like the\u00a0Castlevania\u00a0<\/em>series, players will explore a labyrinth of platforming rooms fighting monsters and gaining the power to open previously closed off areas. Miriam is also able to use a variety of weapons and special abilities to fight, of which the game has received praise for its tight, responsive controls.\u00a0Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night\u00a0<\/em>also features a crafting\/enhancement system that opens up more combat possibilities. A spiritual successor to the series that started it all,\u00a0Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night\u00a0<\/em>is a must play for\u00a0Hollow Knight\u00a0<\/em>fans that want to experience a classic take on the Metroidvania subgenre.<\/p>\n

Although\u00a0Valdis Story: Abyssal City\u00a0<\/em>has often been overlooked when it comes to Metroidvania games<\/a>, it’s one of the subgenre’s best hidden gems. Developed by indie studio Endless Fluff, players control one of four protagonists as they explore a large interconnected map. With a complex combat system focused on combos, players can attack, use magic, evade, and even parry their way through rooms\u00a0of enemies and bosses. While\u00a0Valdis Story: Abyssal City\u00a0<\/em>has a lot of RPG elements such as skill trees and loot, it also features classic Metroidvania elements like complex puzzles and areas rendered inaccessible until new abilities are unlocked.<\/p>\n

Fans of\u00a0Hollow Knight<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>might find\u00a0Valdis Story: Abyssal City\u00a0<\/em>difficult at first given that its combat system is quite complex, and requires evading and parrying much like the\u00a0Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>franchise. However,\u00a0Valdis Story: Abyssal City\u00a0<\/em>is also extremely rewarding for players that master its combat. The exploration mechanics are fantastic and the blend of RPG elements in a Metroidvania foundation should give players a unique experience. Though the difficulty can be initially off-putting,\u00a0Valdis Story: Abyssal City\u00a0<\/em>is great for\u00a0Hollow Knight\u00a0<\/em>fans looking for a challenge.<\/p>\n

Often described as a “roguevania,”\u00a0Rogue Legacy\u00a0<\/em>combines the permadeath mechanics of roguelikes together with the side-scrolling platformer mechanics of Metroidvania games. Featuring randomly generated dungeons, players will explore and fight enemies until they die, transferring control over to\u00a0one of three randomly generated heirs. Each\u00a0descendant has their own unique abilities and genetic quirks that change up the playstyle. Although the original\u00a0Rogue Legacy\u00a0<\/em>was intended to be a Metroidvania game, it ended up only featuring\u00a0a few elements like side-scrolling platformer mechanics. However, the success of the original\u00a0Rogue Legacy\u00a0<\/em>allowed Cellar Door Games to create a sequel titled\u00a0Rogue Legacy 2<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>and transform the series into a true Metroidvania.<\/p>\n

Though\u00a0Rogue Legacy 2\u00a0<\/em>is still in early access on Steam<\/a>, it features several upgrades like an updated art style and a new system for biome generation. Its biggest overhaul however, is the transformation to a full Metroidvania design, alongside the procedurally-generated mechanics.\u00a0Rogue Legacy 2\u00a0<\/em>introduces new items known as heirlooms, which will permanently give characters new abilities to unlock secrets with. These powers will fundamentally change the playstyle of characters and they are quite difficult to find. As a result,\u00a0Rogue Legacy 2\u00a0<\/em>is a fantastic game for\u00a0Hollow Knight\u00a0<\/em>fans looking for a Metroidvania game that has roguelike mechanics as well.<\/p>\n

Hollow Knight<\/em> fans who are looking to play a game styled after the\u00a0Metroid\u00a0<\/em>series should try\u00a0Axiom Verge<\/em>.\u00a0<\/em>Players control a scientist by the name of Trace who wakes up after a lab accident in a high-tech, alien world. Trace must explore the gigantic, labyrinthine world in order to uncover its secrets. Focusing heavily on exploration and discovery,\u00a0Axiom Verge\u00a0<\/em>takes inspiration from classic side-scrollers<\/a> and 2D shooters like\u00a0Metroid\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Contra. <\/em><\/p>\n

Though modern Metroidvania games have deviated from traditional elements of the subgenre,\u00a0Axiom Verge\u00a0<\/em>perfectly captures the unsettling atmosphere<\/a> found in classics like\u00a0Metroid.\u00a0<\/em>Moreover, Axiom Verge\u00a0<\/em>has some of the best level design that the subgenre has to offer, and the discovery of secrets is quite rewarding. Alongside a retro-inspired soundtrack and plenty of replay value,\u00a0Axiom Verge\u00a0<\/em>is a great Metroidvania game for\u00a0Hollow Knight\u00a0<\/em>fans that enjoyed open world exploration and detailed lore.<\/p>\n

Hollow Knight: Silksong\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>is currently in development for PC and Nintendo Switch.<\/p>\n
