While Switch games like\u00a0<em>Mario Kart 8 Deluxe<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Splatoon 2<\/em>\u00a0have given players\u00a0generally smooth online experiences since their\u00a0release, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/super-smash-bros-ultimate-online-fix-plead\/\">games like\u00a0<em>Super Smash Bros. Ultimate<\/em><\/a> and\u00a0<em>Super\u00a0<\/em><em>Mario Maker 2<\/em>\u00a0have become known for stuttering during online play and giving players constant communication errors.<\/p>\n<p>Up until recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/nintendo\/\">Nintendo<\/a> previously offered online play at no extra cost since the release of the hit DS handheld, despite paid services like Xbox Live and PS Plus seeing notable success. However, the transition to a paid online service in the form of Nintendo Switch Online in 2018 caused frustration for many fans who saw no improvement in the quality of online play, despite other additions like a growing library of NES and SNES games. Now, it looks like Nintendo may be replacing its online servers.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/new-pokemon-snap-online-multiplayer\/\">What New Pokemon Snap&#8217;s Online Functions Could Be<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to members of the Nintendo Switch datamining community, Nintendo seems to be\u00a0be replacing its current online multiplayer server system dating back nearly 20 years with a new one very soon. On Twitter, dataminer OatmealDome noted that the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/monster-hunter-rise-demo-friends-list-bug-wont-final-version\/\">Switch&#8217;s recent\u00a0<em>Monster Hunter Rise<\/em> demo<\/a> is\u00a0the first game to utilize the new multiplayer server system, acting as a test run.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OatmealDome\/status\/1356312685223276544?ref_src=https:\/\/gamerant.com\/rumor-nintendo-replace-nearly-20-year-old-online-multiplayer-system\/twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1356312685223276544%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fnintendosoup.com%2Frumor-nintendo-is-replacing-its-current-multiplayer-server-system%2F%22 frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Nintendo has reportedly been using a multiplayer server system known as NEX since <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/netflix-app-discontinued-wii-u-3ds\/\">the 3DS and Wii U<\/a>. Although the tech is reportedly about 20 years old, Nintendo has reportedly been using the system for around 10 years now, which was previously known as Quazal before being bought by Ubisoft in 2010 and licensed by Nintendo soon after. The new multiplayer server system is said to be known as NPLN, and has reportedly entered\u00a0preview phases beginning with the\u00a0<em>Monster Hunter Rise<\/em> demo. It may be worth noting this testing phase, since\u00a0some fans still experienced\u00a0online difficulties when playing the\u00a0<em>Monster Hunter Rise<\/em> demo online.<\/p>\n<p>Although these new rumors have fans hoping for a <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-switch-online-n64-gba-free-games-voice-chat\/\">better Switch experience online,<\/a> OatmealDome\u00a0also mentioned\u00a0that the shift in server systems may just be for housekeeping purposes and likely won&#8217;t immediately bring better online multiplayer functionalities.\u00a0More improvements and features would likely be added later down the line after Nintendo has made\u00a0a smooth transition to the new server system.<\/p>\n<p>It will be interesting to see if the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/super-mario-3d-world-bowsers-fury-online-co-op-bowser-jr\/\">newly added online multiplayer for\u00a0<em>Super Mario 3D World + Bowser&#8217;s Fury<\/em><\/a>\u00a0will also utilize the NPLN multiplayer system when the game releases just next week.
