Disney Plus\u00a0<\/em>series\u00a0The Mandalorian<\/em><\/strong><\/a> has nabbed a Golden Globe nomination for Best Television Series – Drama. This is a first for the\u00a0Star Wars<\/em> series, though it did win seven Emmys for its first season. The nomination, along with so many of the others in top categories, shows how strongly streaming services seem to be taking over the film and TV industry.<\/p>\n

The Mandalorian<\/em>, which made\u00a0it to the top of the streaming lists last year<\/a>, is nominated in its category against Netflix’s\u00a0The Crown<\/em>,\u00a0Ozark,<\/em> and\u00a0Ratched<\/em> as well as HBO Max’s\u00a0Lovecraft Country<\/em>. This is an obvious win for the streaming services, as the drama category was completely dominated by them. The Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy category was also dominated by streaming services, with only CBC’s\u00a0Schitt’s Creek<\/em> representing for broadcast networks.<\/p>\n

Netflix was the biggest winner of the nominations as a whole,\u00a0with 42 Golden Globe nominations overall. Their film\u00a0Mank<\/em> is top nominated film of the night, with six nods, and they also scored big with\u00a0The Trial of Chicago 7<\/em>\u00a0as well as series\u00a0The Crown<\/em> and\u00a0The Queen’s Gambit<\/em>. HBO Max, Amazon, and Hulu also had multiple nods.\u00a0On top of\u00a0The Mandalorian<\/em>, Disney Plus gets nods in major categories such as Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy as well as Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for the pro-shot of massive Broadway musical\u00a0Hamilton<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0which debuted on the streaming service in the summer of 2020 and quickly took over social media.<\/p>\n

As Disney Plus expands its television catalog, especially with the highly-anticipated MCU series<\/a>‘ coming out this year, it’s likely that they could make even more of a dent in awards season next year. With streaming services getting more nominations at awards shows every year, the trend seems to show that they could eventually shut out classic studios as a whole and traditional film enthusiasts are not happy about this.<\/p>\n

With the long-term effects of the current COVID-19 pandemic on Hollywood<\/a> unknown, this year could have been the chance streaming services needed to close the gap and create a new normal for the industry. Though there clearly is a shift, it’s obviously too early to tell what exactly that shift will look like.<\/p>\n

Both seasons of\u00a0The Mandalorian<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0are currently streaming on Disney Plus and the 78th Annual Golden Globes will air on February 28.<\/p>\n
