Following yesterday’s news that\u00a0Borderlands\u00a0<\/em>developer\u00a0Gearbox Software\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>had been purchased by THQ Nordic and Deep Silver holding company Embracer Group Studios, many wondered what\u00a0would be\u00a0next for the seminal developer. Gearbox had\u00a0spent many years on\u00a0The Borderlands\u00a0<\/em>series<\/a>\u00a0after all,\u00a0with many questioning\u00a0whether the team will move on to a fourth iteration of the IP or something wholly new.<\/p>\n

Although it seems the studio is focused on finishing up its work on\u00a0Borderlands 3<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>first, Head of Gearbox Randy Pitchford did have some interesting words about what’s next for the developer, hinting that\u00a0the team\u00a0won’t be playing it safe going forward. Speaking with GamesBeat, Pitchford claimed riskier ideas are a big part of the company’s future plan, with the studio\u00a0planning\u00a0to try out some innovative new IPs that other publishers\u00a0likely wouldn’t have greenlit.<\/p>\n

“We have so many new IP concepts that are in our incubator, that are ready to explode,”\u00a0the\u00a0CEO claimed, teasing that a lot of\u00a0publishers\u00a0“can\u2019t be comfortable” with the\u00a0types of games it wants to\u00a0make next. According to Pitchford, the deal with Embracer<\/a> has made it possible to go for broke with its crazier concepts, claiming that now it’s part of the company, “we get to take that risk.” The CEO and the team clearly have some fun new ideas outside of the world of\u00a0Borderlands,\u00a0<\/em>so hopefully, Emracer’s financial backing can help bring them to life.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the idea of creating a new IP, Pitchford\u00a0elaborated on how\u00a0working on original ideas is\u00a0a core part of the company’s DNA, discussing\u00a0Borderlands\u00a0<\/em>and the effect it had on the industry. “Before Borderlands, no action game had RPG mechanics and metagame like that,” he tells the publication,\u00a0going on to emphasize that the studio “love[s] innovating.”<\/p>\n

It’s clear that whatever the team winds up moving on to, it will\u00a0look to continue\u00a0pushing\u00a0boundaries and trying out new ideas. Seeing as Embracer purchased\u00a0Gearbox<\/a> for $1.3 billion as well, it’s clear the team will have the financial backing to work on something just as ambitious as Pitchford hints their risky ideas will be.<\/p>\n

Outside of discussing the\u00a0concept of a new franchise, the\u00a0interview covers several other interesting aspects of the acquisition, including the potential for Embracer owned studios to work on Gearbox franchises<\/a>, why the\u00a0team opted for this deal over others it’s been offered in the past, and the structure of the merger\u00a0itself. It looks as though it signals a significant change for\u00a0Gearbox\u00a0going forward, allowing it to work on\u00a0fresh concepts with plenty of support from Embracer and its subsidiaries.<\/p>\n
