It may seem like every other AAA release comes with stories of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/cd-projekt-red-crunch\/\">16-hour game developer shifts<\/a> and other unbearable working conditions. One game that didn&#8217;t have this problem is <strong><em>Mass Effect 2<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Modern BioWare is unfortunately known for\u00a0crunch behavior. However, that was not the case in 2010, with the game that many consider to be\u00a0the franchise\u2019s peak, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/mass-effect-2\/\"><em>Mass Effect 2<\/em><\/a>. The Xbox 360 version of <em>Mass Effect 2<\/em> sits at an impressive 96 percent on Metacritic. The PC and PS3 versions received similar acclaim. Based on the modern AAA development scene, one might assume this success came at the cost of genuinely nightmarish working conditions. It turns out the exact opposite was true, and <em>Mass Effect 2<\/em> had the least overtime of any game in the series.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/mass-effect-1-weakest-part-legendary-edition-remaster-graphics-gameplay-changes\/\">The First Mass Effect May Be the Weakest Part of Legendary Edition, But That\u2019s Okay<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Cian Maher, the Lead Features Editor at TheGamer, spoke with several <em>Mass Effect 2<\/em> development team members. They revealed that <em>Mass Effect 2<\/em> was not only the least unpleasant to make, but came in closest to its original deadline and budget. According to senior gameplay designer Patrick Moran, \u201cFor <em>Mass Effect 2<\/em>, we were able to address most of the items and have the game\u2019s story fully playable more than a year before shipping.\u201d He also described how <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/mass-effect-2-jacob-romance-gay\/\">little of <em>Mass Effect 2<\/em> ended up on the cutting room floor<\/a> compared to other games he worked on. The team actually shipped more content than BioWare planned initially. In Moran\u2019s experience, that is a phenomenally rare occurrence.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/mass-effect-2-commander-shepherd-shooting-husks.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Moran attributes the game\u2019s easy production to planning and organization. He described how the team leaders all kept spreadsheets of potential issues. Moran also praised <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/bioware-dragon-age-4-mass-effect-mark-darrah-casey-hudson-departure\/\">Project Lead Casey Hudson<\/a> for his minute attention to detail. <em>Mass Effect 2<\/em>\u2019s Development Director Dorian Kieken also attributed the success of the game to decisive leadership. Said Kieken, \u201cIt\u2019s about having a focused vision and making the right choices during development. A great example of that was the decision to remove inventory management early on in <em>Mass Effect 2<\/em>, which allowed us to focus a lot more on the minute-to-minute core gameplay.\u201d He also explained that he sees <em>Mass Effect 2<\/em> as proof that developers can make great games without burning out their staff.<\/p>\n<p>Kieken went on to describe the impact of BioWare\u2019s studio culture on keeping the crunch in check. Says Kieken, \u201cWe were pretty explicit on our mission and core values. Back then, for BioWare, it was, \u2018Deliver the best story-driven games in a context of humility and integrity,\u2019 and we filtered all our decisions through that lens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not to say BioWare\u2019s crunch problem spontaneously appeared after <em>Mass Effect 2<\/em> wrapped. The first <em>Mass Effect<\/em> actually had the worst crunch of the original trilogy. Kieken notes how the last year of development was terrible, and the studio lost a lot of talented people because of overwork. Even for BioWare, <em>Mass Effect 2<\/em> was an anomaly, and what studio culture gives, studio culture can take away. According to <em>Mass Effect 3<\/em> senior writer Neil Pollner, inter-office rivalry and a \u201cfigure it out later\u201d attitude were already becoming problems when work on <em>ME3<\/em> began. Both would contribute significantly to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/cyberpunk-2077-launch-development-bad-anthem\/\">the\u00a0troubled releases\u00a0of <em>Andromeda<\/em> and <em>Anthem<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But at <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/mass-effect-2-10-year-anniversary\/\"><em>Mass Effect 2<\/em>&#8216;s tenth anniversary<\/a>, the point stands\u00a0as\u00a0an important reminder that working smarter is better than working harder. To quote Kieken one last time, \u201cGames are complicated and long developments.
