The last <em>BioShock<\/em> game,\u00a0<em>BioShock Infinite<\/em>,\u00a0released in 2013, and the culture and capabilities of video game storytelling has changed a lot since then.<\/p>\n<p>At least one\u00a0big change is likely coming <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/bioshock\/\"><em>BioShock 4<\/em><\/a>\u2019s way. With hints that the upcoming title could resemble an RPG far more that previous installments, <em>BioShock 4<\/em>\u00a0may need to avoid one problem that the <em>Fallout<\/em> games have suffered from.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-horror-games-not-scary\/\">10 Horror Games That Are Great (Despite Not Being Scary)<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fallout-BioShock.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot of evidence that <em>BioShock 4<\/em> will incorporate RPG elements. The series is known for its environmental storytelling, as well as its combination of traditional shooter elements with powered abilities like <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/bioshock-best-franchise-plasmids-bucking-bronco-hypnotize-telekinesis\/\">Plasmids and Vigors<\/a>. In December 2020, however, Cloud Chamber released several job listings with descriptions hinting at RPG elements that the new studio may be looking to introduce to the series.<\/p>\n<p>A listing for the role of Senior Voice Designer asked for experience designing branching dialogue systems. There has never been branching dialogue in a <em>BioShock<\/em> game before, and the listing hints that fans might be able to expect more <em>Fallout<\/em>-style dialogue in the next game. Adding expansive dialogue options would be a similar move to the one made by the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/assassins-creed-valhalla-odyssey-otso-berg\/\"><em>Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/em><\/a> franchise, which introduced more RPG elements (such as dialogue options) over the last\u00a0few games.<\/p>\n<p>Another job listing for the role of Systems Designer also requested experience designing an \u201cemergent sandbox world.\u201d It\u2019s not clear from this if\u00a0<em>BioShock 4<\/em> will be open world, and while this listing could imply RPG elements are coming, this description could also be used to describe areas from the first three <em>BioShock<\/em> games. The word &#8220;sandbox&#8221; somewhat implies access to the entire world from the get-go, which would be a first for the franchise, and could lead to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/bioshock-4-news-rpg-dialogue-system-fallout\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more RPG elements coming to\u00a0<em>BioShock 4<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It seems there are several ways in which <em>BioShock 4<\/em>\u00a0may resemble <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/fallout-4-new-game-fo5-rideable-power-armor\/\"><em>Fallout 4<\/em><\/a> more than previous <em>BioShock<\/em> games. Considering both game franchises were already sci-fi series\u00a0that\u00a0played with elements of historical fiction and used a first-person perspective and semi-cartoonish art style, <em>BioShock 4<\/em> could look a lot like <em>Fallout<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>One focus for improvement in\u00a0the game\u00a0will\u00a0likely be <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/bioshock-4-weapon-customization\/\"><em>BioShock 4<\/em>&#8216;s combat<\/a>, one of the most frequently criticized areas of <em>BioShock Infinite<\/em> due to the bullet-spongey nature of enemies like the Handyman. This could make the more difficult fights tedious rather than exciting.\u00a0Improving FPS combat was also a big focus in<em> Fallout 4<\/em>, which led many critics to consider it a better shooter, but a worse RPG than previous <em>Fallout<\/em> games.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/bioshock-vs-atomic-heart\/\">Comparing Atomic Heart to BioShock<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/bioshock-the-collection-lets-play-video-andrew-ryan.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>As the two franchises start to show similarities between each other, <em>BioShock 4<\/em> needs to avoid one problem which has befallen the <em>Fallout<\/em> games over the years. The next <em>BioShock<\/em> game shouldn\u2019t focus on the size of its world, or the breadth of its dialogue options, if that risks creating a world lacking the same philosophical focus as <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/hidden-details-everyone-missed-original-bioshock-game\/\">previous <em>BioShock<\/em> games<\/a>. While the first two <em>Fallout<\/em> games had strong philosophical themes, more recent games have increasingly\u00a0created a pastiche of its settings, without many particularly pressing questions.<\/p>\n<p><em>Fallout 4<\/em> edged towards a philosophical problem with its treatment of synths, but backed away before pressing on the issue too hard, instead essentially asking the player to make their mind up about whether or not synths are sentient. The original <em>BioShock<\/em> and <em>BioShock Infinite<\/em>, on the other hand, make the positions of the storytellers very clear when it comes to\u00a0the game&#8217;s central philosophical questions.
