With Larian Studios picking up development of the series, many fans were surprised but excited to hear that the studio behind the\u00a0<em>Divinity\u00a0<\/em>series had successfully acquired the IP rights to the\u00a0<em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The massive success of\u00a0<em>Divinity: Original Sin\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Divinity: Original Sin 2<\/em> seemed to be the biggest catalysts for Larian Studios ending up as the developers for\u00a0<em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate 3.\u00a0<\/em>Both\u00a0<em>Divinity: Original Sin\u00a0<\/em>games have become modernized CRPG classics as they bring a contemporary design and mechanics to an old-school genre. As players continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/baldurs-gate-3\/\">test out\u00a0<em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate 3\u00a0<\/em>in early access<\/a>, it&#8217;s evident that the direction of the game is largely influenced by\u00a0Larian Studio&#8217;s work on\u00a0the\u00a0<em>Divinity\u00a0<\/em>series.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/baldurs-gate-3-early-access-good\/\">How Early Access Has Been Good for Baldur&#8217;s Gate 3<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Divinity-Original-Sin-I.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Though Larian Studios has been creating\u00a0<em>Divinity\u00a0<\/em>games as early as 2002, the series didn&#8217;t receive mainstream attention until the release of\u00a0<em>Divinity: Original Sin\u00a0<\/em>in 2014 and\u00a0<em>Divinity: Original Sin 2\u00a0<\/em>in 2017. In 2014, Larian Studios ran a Kickstarter campaign to fund the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/divinity-original-sin-2-beginner-mistakes\/\">development and release of\u00a0<em>Divinity: Original Sin<\/em><\/a>, and\u00a0<em>Divinity: Original Sin\u00a0<\/em>was a risky venture as Larian Studios would&#8217;ve gone bankrupt if the game was not a commercial success. Thankfully,\u00a0<em>Divinity: Original Sin\u00a0<\/em>easily surpassed all predictions as it became\u00a0the fastest selling game in Larian Studios&#8217; history.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest reason for\u00a0the success of\u00a0<em>Divinity: Original Sin\u00a0<\/em>was its ability to modernize the CRPG genre\u00a0by translating old-school mechanics into something fresh. While games\u00a0like\u00a0<em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Neverwinter Nights\u00a0<\/em>were classics in the genre,\u00a0many features\u00a0haven&#8217;t aged well such as awkward UIs\u00a0or clunky combat. Featuring\u00a0a complex turn-based combat system and unparalleled environmental interaction,\u00a0<em>Divinity: Original Sin\u00a0<\/em>felt like a natural evolution of the CRPG genre in terms of gameplay.\u00a0Naturally, this evolution was the perfect way to modernize the\u00a0<em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate\u00a0<\/em>franchise as well. While the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/baldurs-gate-3-unique-party-setups\/\"><em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate\u00a0<\/em>series is known for its complex storylines<\/a> and rich lore, the mechanics needed to be overhauled and emulating the\u00a0<em>Divinity\u00a0<\/em>series was a fantastic approach.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/baldurs-gate-3-logo-large.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Although\u00a0<em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate 3\u00a0<\/em>is currently in early access, the first act of the game is available to play and fans of the\u00a0<em>Divinity\u00a0<\/em>series will immediately notice the similarities in combat. Much like the combat systems in the\u00a0<em>Divinity\u00a0<\/em>series,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/baldurs-gate-3-dungeons-dragons-advanced-tactics\/\"><em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate 3\u00a0<\/em>features an assortment of mechanics<\/a> like environmental interactions, verticality,\u00a0manipulating items, and more. Although the heavy inspiration from the\u00a0<em>Divinity\u00a0<\/em>series doesn&#8217;t feel like old\u00a0<em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate\u00a0<\/em>games, they still fit in nicely with the aesthetics of the tabletop RPG genre. The combat system is easy to learn but difficult to master, and players will find there&#8217;s an infinite number of ways to approach combat. Whether it&#8217;s through stacking crates to gain a height advantage or exploiting elemental surfaces,\u00a0<em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate 3\u00a0<\/em>feels exactly how a modern CRPG should.<\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0<em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate 3\u00a0<\/em>might feel more like a\u00a0<em>Divinity\u00a0<\/em>game than a sequel to\u00a0<em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate 2, <\/em>it still brings enough elements from the <em>Dungeons and Dragons 5e<\/em> ruleset to appeal to the veteran fans. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/baldurs-gate-3-dungeons-dragons-subclasses\/\"><em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate 3\u00a0<\/em>retains much\u00a0of its <em>DnD<\/em> inspiration<\/a> through mechanics such as roll modifiers, advantage and disadvantage, and team-based initiative. Even dialogue options can be determined from a roll of a dice although Larian Studios has also ensured that losing a roll doesn&#8217;t always punish the player. Furthermore, players will be able to use the online multiplayer to bring together parties of four in order to\u00a0better emulate a true tabletop experience.<\/p>\n<p><em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate 3\u00a0<\/em>combines the legacy of the original franchise\u00a0together with\u00a0the modernized\u00a0combat engine of the\u00a0<em>Divinity\u00a0<\/em>series. It rarely leans heavily into one side, and this makes it accessible for both newcomers and veterans of the series. Even though\u00a0<em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate 3\u00a0<\/em>is still in early access, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/baldurs-gate-3-divinity-original-sin-2-tips\/\">the influence it has taken from\u00a0<em>Divinity<\/em><\/a><i>\u00a0<\/i>has already proven to be quite successful in modernizing the franchise. Whether players are new to CRPGs or already love the\u00a0<em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate\u00a0<\/em>series, there&#8217;s plenty of depth for everyone to enjoy. For\u00a0<em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate 3,\u00a0<\/em>not every DnD mechanic is going to translate well to an actual video game. Dice rolls can be frustratingly dependent on luck, there\u00a0are plenty of bugs and optimization issues, and the game itself has a massive scope.\u00a0By taking feedback from players like it did for the\u00a0<em>Divinity\u00a0<\/em>series, Larian Studios is able to incrementally improve the game until its final release date.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/baldurs-gate-3-early-access-review\/\"><em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate 3\u00a0<\/em>is a great example of early access done properly<\/a> as it allows Larian Studios to explore different ideas with a live community while ensuring the game will be of high quality at release.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/baldurs-gate-3-when-more-chapter\/\"><em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate 3\u00a0<\/em>is perhaps the most ambitious title<\/a> from Larian Studios to date. There are countless combinations of skills, elemental reactions, environmental interactions, and dialogue choices that must be fine-tuned before release. To do the\u00a0<em>Baldur&#8217;s Gate\u00a0<\/em>series justice, Larian Studios has opted to utilize everything it has learned from developing\u00a0<em>Divinity: Original Sin\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Divinity: Original Sin 2.\u00a0<\/em>Much of the success found in the\u00a0<em>Divinity\u00a0<\/em>series has been emulated in\u00a0<em>Baldur&#8217;s\u00a0Gate 3\u00a0<\/em>from its modernized combat engine to the strong relationship built with players.
