Resident Evil 6<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is often lambasted as one of the worst entries in the long-running survival horror franchise, yet it has its own charm. Anybody who wants a horror experience without worrying about ammunition, resources, or accidentally ruining a playthrough by being too prodigal could do a lot worse than\u00a0the sixth numbered entry.<\/p>\n

Plenty of similar games are worth trying out for anybody looking to scratch a similar itch. Whether they have compelling cooperative play or fast-paced action<\/a>, all the games below should provide thrills similar to\u00a0Resident Evil 6’s<\/em>. Given the success of\u00a0Resident Evil 7<\/em> and the two recent remakes<\/a>, the series is not likely returning to this more action-forward direction anytime soon.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Shadows Of The Damned<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Produced by Shinji Mikami and partly written by Suda51,\u00a0Shadows of the Damned<\/em> showcases these two’s creative talents at every corner. The over-the-shoulder camera screams\u00a0Resident Evil 4<\/em><\/a>, while the writing and plot are just the type of ridiculousness one would expect from the creator of\u00a0The Silver Case <\/em>and\u00a0No More Heroes.<\/em> While the two aforementioned game designers were disappointed with their work, reviews were mostly kind.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Resident Evil 5<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Before\u00a0Resident Evil 6<\/em>,\u00a0the fifth mainline entry<\/a> in the franchise took\u00a0Resident Evil 4’s\u00a0<\/em>gameplay innovations and blew them up while letting players bring a friend along for the ride.<\/p>\n

Resident Evil 5\u00a0<\/em>strays\u00a0further from the survival horror roots, but it manages to be one of the finest linear cooperative action games of all time. Nothing feels better or more intense than having your back against a corner while a friend frantically rushes in to save the day.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Dead Island<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Before venturing into survival horror RPGs<\/a>, Techland was best known for the\u00a0Call of Juarez\u00a0<\/em>series.\u00a0Dead Island\u00a0<\/em>took several cues from\u00a0Borderlands<\/em> and moved the action to a zombie-infested island. Players start out having to fend off the undead with melee weapons before earning more guns and having to battle human opponents. In co-op it is tons of fun to run away from a horde with friends while doing your best to thin the herd.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Lollipop Chainsaw<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Lollipop Chainsaw<\/em> did not receive the greatest reviews upon release, but neither did\u00a0Resident Evil 6<\/em>. Directed by Suda51, the famous and enigmatic game designer collaborated with director James Gunn for the narrative. A chainsaw-wielding cheerleader who has her boyfriend’s still living decapitated head hanging from her hip certainly sounds like it is up James Gunn’s alley. The gameplay is repetitive, but the crude humor and aesthetic should be enough for some players to enjoy.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Dante’s Inferno<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

When\u00a0Dante’s Inferno\u00a0<\/em>was announced, people thought it was a joke. How could a developer turn a piece of classic literature into an action game? Turns out Visceral Games, the makers of\u00a0Dead Space<\/em>, did okay with the property.\u00a0Dante’s Inferno<\/em> takes many cues from\u00a0God of War<\/em><\/a>, and manages a decent interpretation of the formula. Despite a sequel hook, a continuation will likely never come to fruition.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Dead Space 3<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Much like\u00a0Resident Evil<\/em>, the\u00a0Dead Space\u00a0<\/em>series took a slow turn towards action-oriented combat and away from survival horror. The first two entries are modern classics, while the third entry polarized fans. Going through the campaign cooperatively with a buddy is certainly a plus, but it lacked the charm of Dead Space\u00a0<\/em>and its sequel. Still, it is still worth visiting if you want action-packed horror. The upcoming\u00a0The Callisto Protocol\u00a0<\/em>feels like it might bring back\u00a0Dead Space’s\u00a0<\/em>iconic space horror.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Left 4 Dead<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Perhaps one of the most beloved games on this list,\u00a0Left 4 Dead<\/em> grabbed the world by storm on the Xbox 360 and PC. Valve is known for some of the greatest first-person shooters of all time, and\u00a0Left 4 Dead<\/em> stands toe to toe with\u00a0Half-Life<\/em> and\u00a0Portal<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Fans have been clamoring for a third entry in the series for years.<\/a> Turtle Rock Studios currently is working hard on\u00a0Back 4 Blood<\/em>, a spiritual successor to\u00a0Left 4 Dead<\/em>.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Dying Light<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Dead Island 2\u00a0<\/em>is currently in development, but Techland\u00a0is not developing it. After the first\u00a0Dead Island<\/em>, the team moved on to\u00a0Dying Light<\/em>. It is similar to\u00a0Dead Island<\/em> in many ways, but features a bigger, more vertical map and more free-flowing movement. The story is completely forgettable, but the sequel is looking to change that with numerous branching paths. Unfortunately,\u00a0Dying Light 2<\/em> seems to be stuck in a troublesome development.<\/a><\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Doom 3<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The first two\u00a0Doom\u00a0<\/em>games are revolutionary first-person shooters.<\/a>\u00a0Doom 3<\/em> came out a decade later and slowed things down for a more horror-themed experience. The game still has its fast sequences in hell, but most of the adventure has the player facing off against only a small handful of enemies at a time. The shift polarized\u00a0Doom\u00a0<\/em>fans, but it certainly has its audience. The reboot from 2016 brought the series back to its roots.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>The Evil Within 2<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Resident\u00a0Evil 6\u00a0<\/i>took\u00a0Resident Evil 4’s\u00a0<\/em>gameplay in a certain direction, while\u00a0The Evil Within<\/em>\u00a0went the complete opposite route.\u00a0The Evil Within<\/em>\u00a02\u00a0<\/em>especially feels like the next evolution of the action survival horror gameplay\u00a0Resident Evil 4\u00a0<\/em>pioneered. With more open hubs and stealth mechanics, the second game in the series gives a new dynamic to the resource management common to the genre. With\u00a0GhostWire: Tokyo<\/em> as Tango Gameworks’ next project, it does not look like we’ll see a third game in the series anytime soon.<\/a><\/p>\n
