In the world of animation, few companies have earned as much respect as Studio Ghibli. Founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, Toshio Suzuki, and\u00a0Yasuyoshi Tokuma, Studio Ghibli has spent the best part of 35 years crafting visually stunning and narratively dense movies, ones that have helped introduce anime to western nations. Its pedigree is beyond doubt, with Miyazaki’s\u00a0Spirited Away\u00a0<\/em>being the first (and currently only) anime film to win an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.<\/p>\n

Miyazaki is synonymous with Ghibli, as the filmmaker\u00a0was behind a large majority of\u00a0the studio’s most celebrated works. However,\u00a0the company’s portfolio does not start and end with the director of\u00a0Princess Mononoke\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0My Neighbor Totoro<\/em>; in fact, even without\u00a0Miyazaki’s films, Studio Ghibli’s resume is nothing short of remarkable. How do all these projects rank according to their Rotten Tomatoes<\/a> scores?<\/p>\n

14 <\/span>Earwig and the Witch (32%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Ghibli’s most recent film is a stark departure from the norm for the company. While the studio has occasionally experimented with unique art styles,\u00a0Earwig and the Witch<\/em><\/a>‘s switch to 3D animation<\/a> seems motivated by external influences rather than narrative ones. All things considered, the film’s visuals are about average, but they lack any of the\u00a0endearing whimsy often found in Ghibli’s projects. Unfortunately, the characters are also not fleshed out enough, even if they are quite likable.<\/p>\n

While there are worse ways to spend 90 minutes, Earwig and the Witch\u00a0<\/em>marks a disappointing and forgettable low for Studio Ghibli.<\/p>\n

13 <\/span>Tales From Earthsea (43%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Hayao Miyazaki’s son,\u00a0Gor\u014d Miyazaki, made his directorial debut with 2006’s\u00a0Tales from Earthsea<\/em>, Studio Ghibli’s lowest-rated film\u00a0at that point in time.\u00a0Tackling themes of nature and balance,\u00a0Tales from Earthsea\u00a0<\/em>very much feels like an attempt to replicate the magic of Hayao Miyazaki’s films, albeit one that is\u00a0largely stripped of the human core or playfulness\u00a0found in\u00a0the latter’s works.<\/p>\n

Tales from Earthsea\u00a0<\/em>is by no means a terrible debut for a first-time director, it is just not an especially engaging one.<\/p>\n

12 <\/span>My Neighbors the Yamadas (78%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Isao Takahata is a highly influential director that not only helped shape Studio Ghibli’s voice as a co-founder but the anime industry in general. Takahata’s films tend to be rather intimate affairs, often revolving around relationships and families.\u00a0My Neighbors the Yamadas\u00a0<\/em>consists of a series of mostly self-contained stories<\/a> centering around the titular family, with the film covering events that many people should be able to relate to.<\/p>\n

Nowadays, slice of life is one of the most common genres explored in anime, but that was not the case in 1999. While not the director’s greatest project,\u00a0My Neighbors the Yamadas\u00a0<\/em>is an incredibly easy sit.<\/p>\n

11 <\/span>Pom Poko (85%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Pom Poko\u00a0<\/em>tells the timeless tale of tanuki trying to protect their natural homes from humans and, by extension, modernization. At nearly two hours,\u00a0Pom Poko\u00a0<\/em>is perhaps a touch too long for its own good,\u00a0but this is still a journey worth taking.<\/p>\n

The film is at its most entertaining during its early stages when\u00a0the focus is primarily on lightheartedly depicting the\u00a0tanuki’s way of life. Once things take a turn for the more serious,\u00a0Pom Poko\u00a0<\/em>becomes a somber cautionary tale that (wisely) offers no solutions.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>From Up on Poppy Hill (86%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

While\u00a0Tales From Earthsea\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Earwig and the Witch\u00a0<\/em>fail to\u00a0meet Studio Ghibli’s standard of quality,\u00a0Gor\u014d Miyazaki’s\u00a0From Up on Poppy Hill\u00a0<\/em>rests comfortably as a respectable mid-tier entry in the company’s filmography.<\/p>\n

Set in the early 1960s,\u00a0From Up on Poppy Hill<\/em>\u00a0pays a lot of respect to the past through its authentic presentation and deft characterization of its players.\u00a0Telling a cute and small story, this 2011 release offers a glimpse into an era many people did not experience directly.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Ocean Waves (88%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

A TV movie directed by\u00a0Tomomi Mochizuki,\u00a0Ocean Waves\u00a0<\/em>was designed to be a smaller entry in Studio Ghibli’s portfolio. With a brisk running time and a grounded story about young love, this 1993 film explores, through a flashback, the relationship between two teenagers and the way they would go on to influence each other, notably the impact Rikako has on Taku.<\/p>\n

Ocean Waves\u00a0<\/em>is a comfortable watch, as there is very little in the way of tension despite the presence of a love triangle.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>When Marnie Was There (91%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

At the moment, it could be argued that 2014’s\u00a0When Marnie Was There\u00a0<\/em>was\u00a0the last traditional film released by Studio Ghibli, although that should change in a few years’ time when Hayao Miyazaki’s\u00a0How Do You Live?\u00a0<\/em>hits the scene.<\/p>\n

Tackling grief, depression, and isolation,\u00a0When Marnie Was There\u00a0<\/em>is an emotionally captivating tale about maturity and innocence, all told through the endearing (and complex) relationship\u00a0that forms\u00a0between the titular girl and Anna.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>The Cat Returns (91%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Studio Ghibli has mastered the act of\u00a0balancing child-like wonder with adult concepts, crafting films that can be enjoyed by all ages in the process. In many ways,\u00a0The Cat Returns\u00a0<\/em>is the studio’s only children’s film, as it lacks the ambition and depth of most of the company’s other projects.<\/p>\n

That said,\u00a0The Cat Returns\u00a0<\/em>also happens to be extremely charming and entertaining. Sometimes, a fun movie is just\u00a0enough.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>The Red Turtle (93%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Co-produced by Studio Ghibli and Wild Bunch,\u00a0The Red Turtle\u00a0<\/em>is a parable movie about a man stranded on an island who comes to appreciate his new surroundings through the influence of a (shapeshifting) turtle.<\/p>\n

Stripped of any dialogue,\u00a0The Red Turtle\u00a0<\/em>is very much a mood piece that aims to engross audiences in its lively (and mesmerizing) environment. This 2016 film is a magical experience that is quite unlike anything else that makes up Studio Ghibli’s resume.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Whisper of the Heart (94%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The only feature film directed by\u00a0Yoshifumi Kond\u014d prior to his untimely passing in 1998,\u00a0Whisper of the Heart\u00a0<\/em>is a beautiful exploration of adolescence, the creative arts, and self-discovery. The story primarily revolves around\u00a0Shizuku Tsukishima, a young girl with a passion for writing but who is also hesitant to embrace it, and her friendship with\u00a0Seiji Amasawa, a violinist who is already pursuing his dreams.<\/p>\n

Whisper of the Heart<\/em>‘s animation is naturally gorgeous<\/a>, but its characters are the ones that steal the show.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>The Secret World of Arrietty (95%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Based on Marty Norton’s\u00a0The Borrowers\u00a0<\/em>books,\u00a0The Secret World of Arrietty\u00a0<\/em>envisions a world where miniature people\u00a0exist beneath the floors and walls. The source material and this type of concept have been tackled before, but the story benefits greatly from the freedom afforded by animation and Ghibli’s\u00a0willingness to not talk down to its audience.<\/p>\n

The heart of this tale is the friendship between a normal-sized human, Sh\u014d, and the tiny Arrietty. There will be laughs, screams, and a few tears.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Only Yesterday (100%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Isao Takahata’s\u00a0Only Yesterday\u00a0<\/em>needed a couple of decades to receive the recognition it warrants outside of Japan, but it eventually cemented its place among anime’s greats. Released in 1991,\u00a0Only Yesterday\u00a0<\/em>follows a 27-year-old woman, Taeko, who takes a trip to the countryside.<\/p>\n

Along the way, the isolated protagonist relives various memories from her childhood, ones that provide insight into the person that she has become without revealing every noteworthy thing about her.\u00a0Only Yesterday\u00a0<\/em>is an introspective, mature, and complex film.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (100%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Isao Takahata’s final film,\u00a0The Tale of the Princess Kaguya\u00a0<\/em>serves as a showcase of all the things that made the filmmaker such a prominent figure in the entertainment industry.\u00a0Its\u00a0minimalist art style highlights Takahata’s willingness to push anime into new directions on a visual level. Meanwhile, the film’s narrative blends social, cultural, and historical themes to create something that is truly timeless.<\/p>\n

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya\u00a0<\/em>is a work of art of the highest caliber, a project that can define a generation or a career.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Grave of the Fireflies (100%)<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

In a resume filled with almost nothing but masterpieces, Grave of the Fireflies\u00a0<\/em>sits as\u00a0Isao Takahata’s greatest work. A hauntingly personal war story that is beyond depressing<\/a>,\u00a0Grave of the Fireflies\u00a0<\/em>follows two children as they attempt to survive World War II.<\/p>\n

Brutally honest and devoid of any heroism,\u00a0Grave of the Fireflies\u00a0<\/em>is specifically about the innocent victims who are consumed by these types of situations. Once watched, there is no forgetting this film, but its heavy subject matter makes repeat viewings difficult to stomach.<\/p>\n
