Although there was a lot of promise for Birds of Prey<\/strong><\/em>, it ended up underperforming at the box office (partly due to hitting theaters around the time that COVID went worldwide<\/a>) and received lukewarm reviews, at best. The main criticism levied against the movie was that it couldn\u2019t decide what it wanted to be. It was either a Deadpool<\/em>-style fourth-wall-breaking comedy led by\u00a0Harley Quinn or a team-up movie anchored by an ensemble, and those two premises were at odds. According to director Cathy Yan, this was the result of interference by Warner Bros<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with The Playlist, Yan compared her experiences working with a big budget on Birds of Prey<\/em> to working with a smaller budget<\/a> on her directorial debut Dead Pigs<\/em>. While Dead Pigs<\/em> was \u201ca singular, pure version” of herself, Yan says that dealing with the nine-figure budget of Birds of Prey<\/em> was \u201cdefinitely challenging\u201d because she faced \u201cpressures\u201d from Warner Bros., and the studio was \u201cundergoing a lot of change\u201d at the time. The director explained, \u201cinevitably, you end up having to compromise and fight for stuff. And you win some and you lose a lot. It\u2019s just kind of how it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Warner Bros. tapped Yan to helm Birds of Prey<\/em> after Dead Pigs<\/em> emerged as one of the biggest critical hits of the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. Margot Robbie was attached to Birds of Prey<\/em> as a producer to avoid the overt sexualization of Harley Quinn that had been seen in Suicide Squad<\/em><\/a>, but ultimately, since the studio executives are the ones stumping up $100 million, they\u2019re the ones who get the final say when there\u2019s a creative disagreement. After giving Yan more or less full creative control during pre-production and production, Warner Bros. stepped in during post-production.<\/p>\n

According to Yan, studio interference is just part of the deal when making a big-budget blockbuster: \u201cI would have loved to have more control over the edit, but that\u2019s just kind of how it is.\u201d Yan added, \u201cI don\u2019t know if there\u2019s a Cathy Yan cut out there,\u201d so don\u2019t go starting a<\/a>ny movements like #ReleaseTheSnyderCut or #ReleaseTheAyerCut<\/a> just yet. But she did acknowledge that tampering by the studio isn\u2019t conducive to creativity, because the goal of making movies is \u201cto match what you ultimately see on screen with what\u2019s in our head.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although Birds of Prey<\/em> didn\u2019t make enough money at the box office to warrant a sequel<\/a>, Yan hasn\u2019t ruled out directing another big-budget movie if the story is interesting. She explained, \u201cI would not discount ever doing [a big studio movie] again. I try not to think of whether I would do this type of movie or that type of movie again, or whether I\u2019d work with this studio or that. But more like, \u2018Is this story compelling?\u2019\u201d She added that she\u2019s interested in working more from her own scripts (Birds of Prey<\/em> was penned by Christina Hodson) in order to \u201chave a little bit more control over the story I\u2019m telling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the years, Warner Bros. has become notorious for tampering with filmmakers\u2019 visions for DCEU movies. The studio hired the editors of Suicide Squad<\/em>\u2019s well-received preview to completely recut David Ayer\u2019s movie as, bascially, a feature-length trailer and forced Zack Snyder to keep Justice League<\/em> under two hours after the lengthy runtime of Batman v Superman<\/em> was criticized<\/a>. So, the fact that they altered Yan\u2019s vision for Birds of Prey<\/em> is hardly surprising.<\/p>\n

Birds of Prey<\/strong> <\/em>is now available on HBO Max.<\/p>\n
