Although Hugh Jackman ended up becoming the definitive on-screen incarnation of Wolverine<\/a>, it\u2019s no secret that he wasn\u2019t the first choice of\u00a0X-Men<\/strong><\/em><\/a> producers. Russell Crowe was the top choice and Dougray Scott was initially cast before dropping out due to his commitments to Mission: Impossible 2<\/em>. One of the actors considered\u00a0to play\u00a0Wolverine before Jackman\u00a0signed on was Viggo Mortensen, who went on to play Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings<\/em> trilogy instead. In a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused<\/em> podcast, Mortensen revealed why he turned down the part.<\/p>\n

As it turns out, Mortensen rejected the role of Wolverine<\/a> for the same reason that most actors reject superhero roles in long-running franchises: \u201cThe thing that bothered me at the time was just the commitment of endless movies of that same character over and over. I was nervous about that.\u201d He also noted that there were a couple of issues with the version of the script he received, although he acknowledged that \u201cthey straightened most of them out\u201d in time for the final cut.<\/p>\n

When he went in for his first meeting with X-Men<\/em> director Bryan Singer, Mortensen brought his son Henry (his \u201cgood luck charm and guide\u201d), who had a few choice words for Singer about the liberties he was taking with the source material<\/a>. After reading the script, the actor\u2019s son bluntly said, \u201cthis is wrong, that\u2019s not how it is.\u201d Singer spent the rest of the meeting trying to explain the changes he made \u2013 in Mortensen\u2019s words, \u201cfalling all over himself\u201d \u2013 and\u00a0when\u00a0Mortensen and his son\u00a0left the meeting, he\u2019d already decided he didn\u2019t want to make the multi-movie commitment. He also pointed out the irony that, a few months later, he signed up to shoot three Lord of the Rings<\/em> movies back-to-back.<\/p>\n

The X-Men<\/em> franchise that began with Singer\u2019s initial 2000 movie has since come to an unceremonious end<\/a> with box office bombs Dark Phoenix<\/em> and The New Mutants<\/em>, the series\u2019 last installments before Disney acquired 21st Century Fox. Thanks to this merger, Marvel Studios is now free to reboot the X-Men<\/em> movies in the MCU. There have been no casting announcements as of yet, but WandaVision<\/em> has included a couple of hints at how the mutants will be incorporated into the franchise. Funnily enough, as Marvel prepares to reboot the X-Men<\/em> franchise, Mortensen has become a popular fan casting choice for Magneto along with Giancarlo Esposito and Ralph Fiennes.<\/p>\n

When asked what he thought of Jackman\u2019s performance as Wolverine, Mortensen said, \u201cI think he did great. I\u2019m sure no one could imagine anyone doing it better than he did, anyway.\u201d Jackman landed the role on Crowe\u2019s recommendation<\/a> and was only given a couple of weeks\u2019 notice before shooting began, so he had to hit the ground running when the cameras started rolling. Most recently, Mortensen starred in Falling<\/em>, his own directorial debut, in which he plays a gay man whose conservative homophobic father comes down with dementia and has to move in with him.<\/p>\n

X-Men<\/strong><\/em> is now available on Disney Plus.<\/p>\n
