Announced during last December’s Game Awards showcase, developer Striking Distance Studios is currently\u00a0working on a new sci-fi horror game titled\u00a0The Callisto Protocol,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>with the project\u00a0boasting Dead Space<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>producer\u00a0Glenn Schofield in the director’s chair. It seems the game will have more than just Schofield’s expertise, however, with it being announced today that The\u00a0Walking Dead\u00a0<\/em>creator Robert Kirkman and his studio Skybound Entertainment will be collaborating on the project.<\/p>\n

The team-up will allegedly\u00a0focus on\u00a0ensuring\u00a0The Callisto Protocol<\/a>‘s\u00a0<\/em>success outside of the video game space, with Striking Distance reportedly claiming it’s hoping to utilize Skybound’s “expertise in building horror-themed transmedia.” Of course, the company has previously expanded\u00a0The Walking Dead\u00a0<\/em>far beyond just the pages of Kirkman’s original comic books, seeing the\u00a0IP adapted into multiple television shows, a handful of video games, and even an upcoming Rick Grimes-focused movie.<\/p>\n

Speaking on\u00a0The Walking Dead’s\u00a0<\/em>success over various media formats, Kirkman claimed he “can\u2019t wait to explore similar possibilities for The Callisto Protocol<\/em>.” The game is clearly perceived as much more than a one-off horror\u00a0experience\u00a0for Striking Distance Studios, who seems to envision the game spinning into a long-running franchise with a lot of cross-media potential. It’s already been made clear that the\u00a0title will be connected in some way to the\u00a0PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds\u00a0<\/em>universe, taking place 300 years after the events of the popular battle royale title. In an interview last month, Schofield clarified that the connection between the games won’t be “really deep,”<\/a>\u00a0and will be fleshed out more through deeper lore than immediate story.<\/p>\n

The game currently has a release window\u00a0of 2022 and looks to be something of a spiritual successor to\u00a0Dead Space,\u00a0<\/em>with its cinematic trailer<\/a>\u00a0revealing a space-bound prison setting that’s infested with zombified monsters. The footage focuses on one of the prisoners living in this futuristic horror-scape, who awakens to find his cellmate has turned into a nightmarish creature. As the character is devoured by the monster, it’s revealed that the\u00a0scene is being watched by a mysterious figure, who is shown to be in a surveillance room overlooking an icy\u00a0moon-based facility.<\/p>\n

The trailer became a big talking point when it dropped last year, with fans of\u00a0Dead Space\u00a0<\/em>and similar science fiction horror games sharing their excitement for the creepy new project. It looks as though the\u00a0title has ambitious plans to stretch further than just a video game outing, and with Skybound<\/a>‘s track record, it’s sure to be primed for success.<\/p>\n

The Callisto Protocol\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>is set to release\u00a0on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X in 2022.<\/p>\n
