DuVernay will serve as executive producer and writer alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/arrow-canaries-spin-off-dead-cw\/\">Arrow writer\/producer Jill Blankenship<\/a>. News that DuVernay and Blankenkship would be involved in the development of a Naomi series was announced late in 2020, but now there is the official confirmation that a pilot has been ordered by the CW.<\/p>\n<p>According to Deadline: &#8220;The show\u00a0follows a teen girl\u2019s journey from her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse.\u00a0When a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins, and what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes.&#8221; A more recent addition to DC comics, the character Naomi made her debut in 2019 with\u00a0<em>Naomi: Season One<\/em>, which was co-written by Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker, and illustrated by Jamal Campbell.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/powerpuff-girls-live-action-series-cw\/\">\u00a0A Powerpuff Girls Live-Action Series Is Coming To The CW<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the comics Naomi McDuffie is a teenager from <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/wandavision-marvel-fan-favorite-return\/\">an alternate universe<\/a> where the Earth&#8217;s ozone layer has collapsed\u00a0due to\u00a0years of man-made\u00a0pollution, exposing the planet&#8217;s population to radiation. This causes a small group of people to\u00a0gain superpowers and one of them happens to be Naomi&#8217;s mother. Despite the belief\u00a0that these super-powered beings\u00a0can no longer procreate, Naomi&#8217;s mother gives birth to her and sends her away to another dimension in an attempt to\u00a0protect her from\u00a0one of the other super-powered beings, who wish to destroy her and reign supreme.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ava\/status\/1359208725462937601\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Naomi&#8217;s\u00a0energy-based superpowers give\u00a0her a variety of abilities, including super-strength, durability, transformation, and flight.\u00a0Naomi has gone on to become a popular character amongst readers, having run-ins with flagship DC characters like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/godzilla-vs-kong-looks-exactly-like-batman-v-superman\/\">Superman and Batman<\/a>. She eventually went on to join Young Justice, a superhero team made up of younger DC sidekicks and heroes such as Robin and Superboy.<\/p>\n<p>DuVernay made a name for herself with the critically acclaimed, Oscar-winning 2014 film <em>Selma,\u00a0<\/em>which depicted Civil Rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.&#8217;s fight for voting rights in the 1960s Jim Crow south.\u00a0DuVernay has also worked as a director and producer on several television projects in recent years, including <em>Queen of the South<\/em> and the acclaimed Netflix Miniseries <em>When They See Us. <\/em>DuVernay seems to be settling\u00a0her way into the world of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/birds-of-prey-cathy-yan-warner-bros-interfered\/\">DC superhero movies\/TV<\/a>,\u00a0as she is also confirmed\u00a0to be directing a <em>New Gods\u00a0<\/em>movie, based on the DC comic of the same name from the legendary Jack Kirby.<\/p>\n<p>The director shared her excitement for the upcoming pilot on\u00a0Twitter, posting an image of the teenage superhero with the caption: &#8220;<span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">NAOMI was created by Brian Michael Bendis, David Walker and artist Jamal Campbell in 2019. Her last name McDuffie is a tribute to late comic writer Dwayne McDuffie. Now, she\u2019s on her way to a pilot for <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\">@TheCW\u00a0<\/span>from yours truly and Jill Blankenship. Her journey continues.
