It&#8217;s their ideas and hard work that has driven <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-game-franchises-every-console\/\">decades of innovation<\/a> while\u00a0simultaneously inspiring others to develop more engaging and advanced\u00a0games. As they continue to mature and grow as creators, so too do the titles that they deliver\u00a0and, in turn, the very industry itself.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Shigeru Miyamoto<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/inf-miyamoto.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Following in the footsteps of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-gameboy-little-known-trivia\/\">great men like\u00a0Gunpei Yokoi<\/a> and\u00a0Satoru Iwata would be an incredibly daunting prospect for most, but it&#8217;s something that Shigeru Miyamoto has taken in his stride. Under his stewardship, Nintendo continues to go from strength to strength; with the Switch <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-sales-good-bad-switch-wii-u-n64\/\">well on its way to surpassing the Wii as the company&#8217;s best selling console<\/a> of all time. There&#8217;s much more to Miyamoto than just his leadership skills though, as evidenced by his strong back catalog of games.<\/p>\n<p>The veteran creator has played a pivotal role in the creation of some of Nintendo&#8217;s biggest IPs;\u00a0including <em>Mario<\/em>, <em>Zelda<\/em> and <em>Star Fox<\/em>\u00a0to name but a few. As well as <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/super-mario-best-selling-games\/\">selling more than a billion copies between them<\/a>, these series have consistently <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/legend-zelda-ocarina-time-vs-super-mario-64-game-better\/\">pioneered new ideas and gameplay mechanics<\/a> that have helped to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-nintendo-games-2010s-decade-metacritic\/\">shape the gaming landscape<\/a> and inspired countless other creators in the process.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Tim Schafer<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/inf-schafer.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Together with Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer played a hugely important role in the development and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-point-click-games-hold-up-today\/\">popularization of the point and click genre<\/a>.\u00a0They might not be anywhere near as prevalent today as they were during their\u00a0heyday, but these games provided the foundations upon which many of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-worst-adventure-games-metacritic\/\">the best modern day adventure games<\/a> have been\u00a0built. Unlike his former LucasArts colleague, however, Schafer&#8217;s influence on the industry has\u00a0continued well into the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0Schafer turned to Kickstarter to crowdfund what would eventually become <em>Broken Age<\/em>, the platform was still very much in its infancy. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/kickstarter-successful-video-game-campaigns\/\">The project&#8217;s overwhelming success<\/a> therefor served to highlight the viability of crowdfunding video games; thus paving the way for other developers to secure funding without having to bend to the wills and whims of greedy publishers.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Yu Suzuki<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/inf-suzuki.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>One developer who definitely benefited from Tim Schafer&#8217;s popularization of crowdfunding was\u00a0Yu Suzuki;\u00a0whose\u00a0<em>Shenmue 3<\/em> campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/metal-gear-game-series-guinness-world-records\/\">broke\u00a0numerous Kickstarter records<\/a> on the way to being funded. The resulting game was perhaps <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/worst-video-game-2019-disappointing\/\">not what he&#8217;d originally had in mind<\/a>,\u00a0but those which preceded it were <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/video-games-retro-timely-advanced\/\">revolutionary for their era<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/shenmue-lessons-open-world-games\/\">laid\u00a0much of the groundwork for what would ultimately become the open world genre<\/a>. Not only\u00a0was he responsible for some of the company&#8217;s most popular arcade titles of all time, but he also\u00a0revolutionized the fighting genre with his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-fighting-games-ahead-time-worst-too-generic\/\">groundbreaking <em>Virtua Fighter<\/em> series<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Gabe Newell<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/inf-newell.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>In much the same way that <em>Virtua Fighter<\/em> redefined the fighting genre, Valve&#8217;s <em>Half-Life<\/em> series <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-action-games-90s-ahead-time\/\">ushered in a new era for FPS games<\/a>.\u00a0Were it not for the company&#8217;s co-founder and managing directer Gabe Newell, however, it may never have come to be.\u00a0Valve didn&#8217;t just <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/valve-software-video-games-best-metacritic\/\">change the way that people play their games either<\/a>, but also how they purchase them.<\/p>\n<p>With more and more people gaining access to the internet and the ever increasing popularity of PC gaming, Valve launched its digital marketplace Steam in 2003. Almost two decades later and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-worst-things-happen-steam-last-10-years\/\">the service has more than 100 million active monthly users<\/a> and continues to grow in size with every passing year.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Hideo Kojima<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/inf-kojima.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>When it comes to Japanese video game designers, few are as revered or as well known as Hideo Kojima. The <em>Metal Gear<\/em> franchise that he created led the way when it came to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/video-games-longest-cutscenes-history\/\">infusing cinematic techniques into video games<\/a> and\u00a0heavily influenced many of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/last-of-us-best-story-games-recommendations\/\">the narrative-driven titles of today<\/a>. It also popularized <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-stealth-games-not-assassins-creed\/\">the use of stealth mechanics<\/a>\u00a0as well as using shoulder buttons to cycle through weapons and items rather than having to open up a\u00a0menu.<\/p>\n<p>Although nowhere near as influential as <em>Metal Gear<\/em>, Kojima has worked on <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/hideo-kojima-video-games-arent-metal-gear-solid-death-stranding\/\">plenty of other innovative titles over the years<\/a>; the latest of which is <em>Death Stranding<\/em>. It may have been incredibly <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/death-stranding-best-worst-aspects\/\">divisive among players and critics<\/a>, but it&#8217;s a title that <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/hidden-cinematics-death-stranding-overlooked-plot-points\/\">further bridges the gap between video games and movies<\/a> while also implementing some interesting social mechanics.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Dan Houser<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/inf-houser.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Rockstar Games has been responsible for some incredible IPs\u00a0since being established by Sam and Dan Houser back in 1998. The biggest of these is undoubtedly\u00a0<em>Grand Theft Auto<\/em> though; a series which the brothers themselves have played an integral role in developing. Since\u00a0<em>Grand Theft Auto III<\/em>,\u00a0the series\u00a0has <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-open-world-pc-games-ranked\/\">led the way when it comes to open world gaming<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/5-reasons-gta-v-best-game-last-decade-5-games-deserve-title\/\">continues to push the boundaries with each new entry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/gta-clones-best-worst\/\">5 Of The Best GTA Clones Ever Made (&amp; 5 Of The Worst)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>As well as its flagship franchise, the company\u00a0is also responsible for games and series\u00a0like <em>L.A. Noire<\/em>, <em>Bully<\/em> and <em>Red Dead Redemption<\/em>; which goes to show that it&#8217;s\u00a0more than\u00a0just a one-trick pony. These games are perhaps\u00a0equally innovative and, together with the many <em>GTA<\/em> games, have <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/xbox-one-best-selling-games-metacritic-ranked\/\">sold more than a quarter of a billion copies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Hironobu Sakaguchi<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/inf-sakaguchi.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>When\u00a0Hironobu Sakaguchi came up with the idea for <em>Final Fantasy<\/em>, he could not have known just how big or revolutionary the series would go on to become. It singlehandedly <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/original-final-fantasy-hidden-details-everyone-missed\/\">redefined the RPG<\/a> with its engrossing narratives and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/final-fantasy-game-battle-system-best-worst\/\">intuitive turn-based combat system<\/a> and ultimately ushered in <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-90s-rpgs-of-all-time\/\">a golden\u00a0era for the genre itself<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sakaguchi played an integral role in the series&#8217; first six games before taking a step back and eventually leaving Square Enix to open his own studio in 2004.\u00a0Although Mistwalker did find some early success with games like <em>Lost Odyssey<\/em> and <em>Blue Dragon<\/em>, it is Sakaguchi&#8217;s legacy and the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/most-influencial-rpgs\/\">continued influence of Final Fantasy<\/a> that makes him so important to the gaming industry.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Sid Meier<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/inf-meier.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Sid Meier might just be the Tom Clancy of video games; not just because of his\u00a0tendency to insert his\u00a0name into the titles of his\u00a0work, but also\u00a0due to\u00a0the huge influence that he&#8217;s had on his\u00a0chosen\u00a0genre. To many, the <em>Civilization<\/em> series serves as the gold standard for\u00a0turn-based strategy games and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/switch-best-strategy-games-metacritic\/\">each new entry seems to further cement this status<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although not quite as impressive as Firaxis&#8217; flagship series, Meier has worked on a number of simulation and action adventure games during his time in the industry as well; including the likes of <em>Pirates!<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Railroad Tycoon<\/em>.\u00a0Many have tried to emulate his signature development style over the years, but none have come close to delivering anything anywhere near as impressive.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Shinji Mikami<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/inf-mikami.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Shinji Mikami started working at Capcom in 1990, but it would not be until six years later that he&#8217;d be given the\u00a0chance to make his mark. The young designer was chosen to direct the company&#8217;s\u00a0upcoming\u00a0horror game, <em>Biohazard<\/em>; or, as it is known internationally, <em>Resident Evil<\/em>. The rest, as they say, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-selling-capcom-game-franchises-ranked\/\">is history<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mikami worked on the first four <em>Resident Evil<\/em> games as well as some of the series&#8217; many spin-offs. These games not only helped to massively boost the popularity of the survival horror genre, but also <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-horror-games-90s-ahead-time\/\">introduced ideas that would go on to shape it for years to come<\/a>. Since leaving Capcom in 2004, he&#8217;s worked on plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/horror-games-resident-evil-8-not-capcom\/\">other successful IPs like <em>The Evil Within<\/em><\/a> and\u00a0<em>God Hand<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>John\u00a0Carmack<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/inf-carmack.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/john-romero-doom-facts-trivia\/\">John Romero may have coined the term &#8216;deathmatch&#8217;<\/a>, but were it not for the blood, sweat and tears of his creative partner John Carmack, there may well have been nothing to name. His finely-tuned programming skills helped to make <em>Doom<\/em> a terrifying reality\u00a0and also played a key role in the development of several <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-action-games-90s-ahead-time\/\">other genre defining FPS franchises<\/a> like <em>Wolfenstein<\/em> and <em>Quake<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, Carmack left id Software to become the chief technical officer for Oculus VR. Over the course of six years, he contributed towards the successful launch of the company&#8217;s VR headset\u00a0before stepping down in late 2019 in order to devote more time to his ongoing work on artificial intelligence.
