Although FromSoftware’s\u00a0Elden Ring\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>was announced at E3 2019, there has been\u00a0silence ever since leading fans to speculate about the nature of the game.\u00a0The only confirmation that was given to fans was that\u00a0Elden Ring\u00a0<\/em>would be a natural evolution to the\u00a0Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>franchise and it would feature an open-field setting. With no release date in sight, fans are nonetheless excited for\u00a0Elden Ring\u00a0<\/em>because it will likely end up as a Soulslike.<\/p>\n

Over the years, the\u00a0Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>franchise has transformed from a risky gamble to\u00a0becoming so popular that it’s generated its own subgenre within ARPGs. Featuring high-risk combat with hard-hitting enemies and sparse checkpoints, Soulslike games take the\u00a0unforgiving\u00a0formula laid out by\u00a0Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>and put their own spin on the mechanics. With anticipation behind\u00a0Elden Ring<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>building, fans looking for similar games should delve into the Soulslike genre.<\/p>\n

The Nioh<\/em> series has become one of the biggest successes<\/a> in the Soulslike genre and for good reason. Developed by Team Ninja,\u00a0Nioh\u00a0<\/em>has players take control of a samurai in a fictionalized, dark fantasy version of feudal Japan. Though\u00a0Nioh<\/em>\u00a0had been stuck in development since 2004, it was revived and reimagined following the success of the Dark Souls<\/em>\u00a0franchise.\u00a0Featuring a combat system heavily influenced by the\u00a0Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>games,\u00a0Nioh\u00a0<\/em>allows players to fight with melee, ranged, or magic attacks and chain together combos to fight enemies and bosses.\u00a0Like\u00a0Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>games, the player will drop their EXP upon death and are only given one chance to retrieve them. Should they die again before reaching that point, the EXP is lost forever.<\/p>\n

However, the\u00a0Nioh\u00a0<\/em>series also feature a number of differences from other Soulslike games. One of the key combat mechanics for players to master is changing sword stances which allows for different playstyles.\u00a0The high stance will deal more damage while reducing defense, the low stance will use quick attacks with better defense while the middle stance balances both.\u00a0Nioh\u00a0<\/em>can also be much more difficult<\/a> than other Soulslike games as the bosses are some of the most challenging in the genre and will require a steeper learning curve.\u00a0Fans excited for\u00a0Elden Ring\u00a0<\/em>should give\u00a0Nioh\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Nioh 2\u00a0<\/em>a try if they want a unique setting with punishing boss fights.<\/p>\n

While the Soulslike genre has largely found success in 3D environments,\u00a0Salt and Sanctuary\u00a0<\/em>is the perfect representation of how\u00a0Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>would feel as a 2D game instead. Combining Soulslike mechanics with Metroidvania platforming<\/a> features,\u00a0Salt and Sanctuary\u00a0<\/em>captures the atmosphere and tone of the original\u00a0Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>games. Though\u00a0Salt and Sanctuary\u00a0<\/em>shares a lot of similarities with\u00a0Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>like its interconnected map, dodging mechanics, and leaving behind messages, it also stands well on its own.<\/p>\n

Salt and Sanctuary\u00a0<\/em>features a giant skill tree system instead of the traditional souls skills system.\u00a0Similar to games like\u00a0Path of Exile<\/em>\u00a0or Final Fantasy 10<\/em>,\u00a0<\/em>players will\u00a0have the ability to acquire and respec their skills to alter their builds as they play through the game. Moreover, the 2D design of the game rarely feels like a restriction as it utilizes platforming mechanics well to make up for the loss of a third dimension. Though\u00a0Salt and Sanctuary\u00a0<\/em>is less difficult than\u00a0the\u00a0Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>games, it’s a perfect homage to the series, and fans looking for platforming elements to scratch that\u00a0Hollow Knight\u00a0<\/em>itch<\/a> will find lots to love here.<\/p>\n

Elden Ring\u00a0<\/em>fans who are looking to break away from the traditional Soulslike formula should give\u00a0Remnant: From the Ashes\u00a0<\/em>a try. One part\u00a0Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>and one part\u00a0The Division,<\/em><\/a>\u00a0Remnant: From the Ashes\u00a0<\/em>is a third-person survival action shooter where players must destroy hordes of enemies in order to preserve humanity. Much like the\u00a0Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>franchise, the combat in\u00a0Remnant: From the Ashes<\/em> features dodging and a stamina system despite being a shooter. Players will also need to utilize checkpoints effectively to restore health and ammo while managing their upgrades for their weapons.<\/p>\n

On the other hand,\u00a0Remnant: From the Ashes\u00a0<\/em>takes influence from other genres<\/a> such as roguelikes to differentiate itself from other Soulslike games. For example, each campaign features a procedurally generated path which only includes certain side dungeons or boss fights. Players will need to replay the game in order to see the extra content they missed during their first playthrough. Boss movesets are also highly varied and will usually spawn adds reminiscent of games like\u00a0Destiny.\u00a0<\/em>Soulslike fans looking to try a game that focuses on gunplay should try\u00a0Remnant: From the Ashes.<\/em><\/p>\n

On the other hand,\u00a0Elden Ring\u00a0<\/em>fans who are feeling burnt out by the difficulty of traditional Soulslike games and want a more story-focused experience should try\u00a0Code Vein.\u00a0<\/em>Many classic Soulslike mechanics appear in\u00a0Code Vein<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/i>such as an elaborate\u00a0dodge-based combat system, stamina management, currency loss upon death, and checkpoints that respawn enemies. However,\u00a0Code Vein\u00a0<\/em>only uses these mechanics as a foundation and it’s more heavily styled after JRPG elements with its detailed narrative and gameplay.<\/p>\n

Featuring an AI system where players are able to join up with companions, Code Vein<\/em> puts a lot more emphasis on the characterizations<\/a> in its story. Many of the builds are more flexible than typical Soulslike games which allows for experimentation on the fly. Though it’s much easier than other Soulslike games, it also leans heavily into the RPG aspects such as levelling, gearing, and skills. As a result,\u00a0Code Vein\u00a0<\/em>is a great option for players who enjoy the mechanics of Soulslike games but also want to experience a clear-cut story with character development.<\/p>\n

Elden Ring\u00a0<\/em>fans who are looking for a Soulslike experience that’s\u00a0streamlined should try\u00a0Mortal Shell.\u00a0<\/em>Of course, in the case of Soulslike games, simplifying mechanics rarely means making the game easier. Instead,\u00a0Mortal Shell\u00a0<\/em>excels at\u00a0distilling the core gameplay loop<\/a> of the\u00a0Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>franchise into a\u00a0tight package.\u00a0As\u00a0Mortal Shell\u00a0<\/em>was\u00a0developed by\u00a0a very small team of people, the scope of the game is more limited than typical Soulslike games.<\/p>\n

For example, instead of using a wide variety of weapons, armor, and builds,\u00a0Mortal Shell\u00a0<\/em>players are able to use “shells” which are predesigned classes that have different playstyles and backstories. Though it’s focused almost entirely on melee combat, Mortal Shell\u00a0<\/em>is able to distinguish between the playstyles quite well. Featuring\u00a0a dark, brooding atmosphere\u00a0along with unforgiving gameplay to match,\u00a0Mortal Shell\u00a0<\/em>easily\u00a0captures the feeling of dread<\/a> that came along with the original\u00a0Dark Souls\u00a0<\/em>games. Soulslike fans should give\u00a0Mortal Shell\u00a0<\/em>a try if they want to experience a short but tight take on\u00a0Dark Souls.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Elden Ring\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>is currently in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.<\/p>\n
