For a while now, fans of System Shock<\/em> have been looking forward to the release of remasters of the game and\u00a0System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition<\/strong><\/em>. Developer Nightdive Studios announced the System Shock 2<\/em> remaster<\/a>\u00a0in 2019, and said there would be plans for the game to receive a VR mode.<\/p>\n

Now, Nightdive has revealed that the remastered\u00a0System Shock<\/em><\/a> sequel is receiving a playable VR mode for the game’s release. \u00a0Nightdive determined\u00a0that System Shock 2<\/em> has the potential foundation\u00a0for the virtual reality features, and is\u00a0capitalizing\u00a0on this to create a playable VR version of the remaster.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0idea came to Nightdive’s attention while the developer was in the process of going\u00a0through the game’s framework. According to Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick, the option for a playable VR mode for System Shock 2<\/em> emerged while the developer was in the process of reverse-engineering the “missing libraries” for the game. Kick said the idea of a “standalone VR version” came around then, and the studio brought in a VR expert to take a look at the game and let them know what they were working with.<\/p>\n

Using the expert’s input,\u00a0the developer was\u00a0made aware that System Shock 2<\/em> has the blueprint for a working VR mode, but the developer is doing more than making it an add-on. Reportedly, Kick\u00a0said that the\u00a0playable VR mode will be a fully-fleshed out\u00a0feature of\u00a0the game and the studio is building the remaster’s\u00a0VR experience from the ground up.\u00a0System Shock 2’s<\/em>\u00a0VR mode will also be fully compatible\u00a0with its multiplayer mode, so players can play\u00a0together in System Shock’s<\/em>\u00a0sci-fi horror<\/a>\u00a0setting.<\/p>\n

Through cross-platform play, the game’s co-op mode can be played in VR too, with one player using VR and another using a PC to play the game together. One of the reasons Nightdive is developing a dedicated VR mode for System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition<\/em> is the immersive element it can bring to playing\u00a0the game. Kick mentioned\u00a0that in VR “you’re the one actually swinging the weapons, you’re reloading [the guns] yourself.”<\/p>\n

It’s the personal element VR\u00a0brings to the table that could\u00a0enhance the overall gameplay experience.\u00a0To help accomplish this, Nightdive has been studying other VR video games that have come out in recent years to help make the VR mode. Notably,\u00a0Half-Life: Alyx<\/em><\/a>\u00a0released last year, which the developer cites as a huge\u00a0inspiration for the remaster’s VR mode.<\/p>\n

Currently, the VR mode for System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition<\/em> is in the prototype stage, so it might\u00a0not be released with the remaster or\u00a0the System Shock<\/em> remake<\/a>.<\/p>\n

System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition<\/em><\/strong> will release for PC, but currently has no release date.<\/p>\n
