With Resident Evil Village<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0coming out this May, Resident Evil<\/em> players are\u00a0looking forward to what\u00a0the upcoming sequel brings to\u00a0the franchise. Things like the game’s\u00a0new location, the\u00a0supernatural-themed enemies, and the lead\u00a0villain Lady Dimitrescu<\/a>, who’s taken the internet by storm with each\u00a0appearance. However, one element\u00a0making a return to the sequel is\u00a0Resident Evil 7’s<\/em>\u00a0protagonist, Ethan Winters.<\/p>\n

It’s no secret that Ethan Winters will be making his return as the protagonist for Resident Evil Village<\/em><\/a>\u00a0to find his kidnapped daughter. However, Capcom recently revealed in Issue #185 of PlayStation Official Magazine why it chose to bring back Ethan Winters as the protagonist for the sequel. Most of which has to do with the developers growing attached to the character and wanted\u00a0to continue his story in Resident Evil Village<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Game Producer Peter Fabiano spoke in an interview with PlayStation Official Magazine about the developer brining Ethan back. He\u00a0said,\u00a0“The team grew quite attached to Ethan as a character, so we knew we wanted to continue his story arc.”\u00a0According to Fabiano, the team wanted players to experience the game from\u00a0Ethan’s perspective, especially since the sequel is a continuation\u00a0of Resident Evil 7’s<\/em> story<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Keeping the game focused on Ethan Winters also helped keep Capcom’s vision for the sequel on\u00a0track since it will center on Ethan’s journey. Fabiano said\u00a0this also helped the developers coordinate development since the Resident Evil<\/em> teams share information with\u00a0each other. This\u00a0helps them further flesh out Resident Evil Village<\/em>\u00a0as the best\u00a0survival-horror game<\/a>, at least in Fabiano’s words.<\/p>\n

Ethan as the protagonist brings some benefits to the game development since the developers can coordinate better on a shared vision for the game. However, Ethan isn’t the only character making a return in the sequel. Franchise mainstay Chris Redfield is returning for Resident Evil Village<\/em><\/a>, but to what capacity is unknown at this point. Most of the game’s promotion paints a potentially antagonistic role for Chris, but it’s possible there\u00a0may be more to it than that. Overall, there\u00a0is a big\u00a0mystery behind his involvement\u00a0in the game’s story.<\/p>\n

Considering the success of Resident Evil 7<\/em>, it does make sense that Capcom would bring back Ethan Winters, especially if the developers liked him. Of course, some players would like to see the rest\u00a0of the franchise’s main heroes back as protagonists again. With\u00a0Chris Redfield’s inclusion in the sequel, it’s possible players might see some mention\u00a0of the other characters. For now,\u00a0Resident Evil\u00a0<\/em>Village<\/i>\u00a0will continue\u00a0Ethan Winters’ story, and players will be able to see where his journey\u00a0takes them.<\/p>\n

Resident Evil Village<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is set to launch\u00a0May 7, 2021 for PC,\u00a0PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X\/S.<\/p>\n
