On\u00a0January 28, Ryan Reynolds sent out a tweet that got the internet racing. In an attempt to raise further awareness for #BellLet\u2019sTalk, an online drive to normalize discussing mental health issues, he let slip what the concept for Deadpool 3<\/em> would\u2019ve been, before Disney bought Fox<\/a>. As the star, producer, and main creative force behind the film, Reynolds would\u2019ve been clued-in on what the threequel\u2019s concept would\u2019ve been, and turns out it\u2019s weirder than anyone anticipated.<\/p>\n

In the tweet, Reynold commented \u201cbefore Disney bought Fox, Deadpool 3 was gonna be a road trip between Deadpool and Logan. Rashomon style. For real.\u201d While many assumed this was a joke (sardonic throwaway comments like this are right within Reynolds\u2019 wheelhouse), DisInsider (an ultra-reliable leaker) confirmed that this was totally serious and the actual plan before the merger \u2013 Fox really was planning to have a road-trip movie between Deadpool and Wolverine<\/a>. Of course, after finally finding out this abandoned idea, fans felt bittersweet: they were glad they now knew, but disappointed that they would never see such an outrageous film.<\/p>\n

But how would have this idea even worked? Even for a movie that takes such meta-narrative liberties as Deadpool<\/em> (which other superhero films would both break the fourth wall and show R-rated violence in the process?), the idea of Wolverine returning is a charged one. Famously, Hugh Jackman retired the role in 2017\u2019s Logan<\/em><\/a>, after playing the character for 17 years \u2013 would he really return as Wolverine, especially after Logan<\/em>\u2019s fitting farewell?<\/p>\n

Well, some fans think this description is only telling half the truth: in that, instead of being on a road trip with Wolverine, Deadpool would actually be on a road trip with Jackman himself<\/a>, although would only ever refer to him as \u2018Logan\u2019. The previous two Deadpool movies have had plenty of cracks at Jackman, such as Deadpool wearing a mask of his face when from he won \u2018Sexiest Man Alive\u2019 or even cameoing with him in 2009\u2019s much-maligned X-Men Origins: Wolverine<\/em>, so the idea Jackman would be playing himself is both plausible and incredibly on-brand for the franchise. Moreover, given Jackman\u2019s super-shredded physique, he wouldn\u2019t need an in-universe superpower: he could probably already beat baddies to a pulp.<\/p>\n

But what about the road trip element<\/a>? In the comics, both Deadpool and Wolverine go on plenty of road trips. Famously, Wolverine, as \u2018Old Man Logan\u2019, goes on a commute of \u2018Battleworld\u2019 when the multiverse is destroyed on Earth-21923. Facing alternate versions of countless heroes and villains (including Hillbilly Hulks and a Thor Police Force), the character hunts down and kills \u2018God Emperor Doom\u2019, the imperialist leader of this false world. Equally, Deadpool is known to go on road adventures with many of his \u2018friends\u2019, most recently Spider-Man<\/a> in Vol.8 of the Spider-Man\/Deadpool <\/em>series. So how would have this road trip worked? The answer lies within \u201cRashomon style.\u201d<\/p>\n

A \u2018Rashomon-style\u2019 story is one where the same event is recounted by several characters, each adding their own inimitable perspective, so that the stories differ so much they\u2019re impossible to reconcile. This style of storytelling is evident throughout TV and film, usually in mystery genres (think about how 2019\u2019s Knives Out<\/em><\/a>\u00a0includes the different accounts from the Thrombey family, or how 2014\u2019s The Affair<\/em> shows different perspectives of the affair) \u2013 it\u2019s a way of either building tension or supplying comedy.<\/p>\n

Needless to say, a \u2018Rashomon-style\u2019 film is one that plays with non-linear storytelling, but that isn\u2019t a new concept for the Deadpool<\/em> franchise<\/a>. From the first film including alternating plot threads (simultaneously showing Deadpool\u2019s origin and how he\u2019s hunting down his \u2018makers\u2019) to its sequel messing around with time travel with Cable, this franchise is already poised to deal with \u2018Rashomon-style\u2019 storytelling. In fact, since \u2018Rashomon-style\u2019 can sometimes be confusing to viewers, Deadpool 3<\/em> would be the perfect place to use it, as the \u2018Merc with a Mouth\u2019 could simply talk to the audience directly to explain any complexities!<\/p>\n

So, what could the \u2018Rashomon-style\u2019 storytelling be in regard to? One prevalent fan theory is that Deadpool and \u2018Logan\u2019 are on the run from some nefarious force, with the film beginning \u2018in media res\u2019 so as not to explain the set-up to the viewer. Then, as Deadpool and \u2018Logan\u2019 drive along, they argue over what caused this force to be after them, with each one\u2019s perspective blaming the other for the predicament.<\/p>\n

Although simple in premise, this suggested plot does utilize Logan, Deadpool, a road trip, and \u2018Rashomon-style\u2019 in a convincing way, so perhaps could\u2019ve been the answer. Nevertheless, whatever that initial idea was, Deadpool 3<\/em> will now officially be part of the MCU<\/a> and Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, (a sister script-writing pair moistly known for their work on\u00a0Bob’s Burgers<\/em><\/a>) will be penning a brand new screenplay; if there is a \u2018road trip\u2019 in Deadpool 3<\/em>, it\u2019s up to them.<\/p>\n
