Since 2001, Nintendo’s relaxing life-sim\u00a0Animal Crossing<\/em>\u00a0has become known for many things. Among pioneering real-time day\/night cycles in games, the series\u00a0has introduced fans to a variety of lovable animal villagers,<\/a> clothing and style options, and customization galore. Additionally, the series has amassed an incredible collection of different furniture items in the last 20 years, allowing players to buy and sell furniture, amass their own collections, and\u00a0place items around their homes. Now, Animal Crossing<\/em>‘s wide collection of\u00a0furniture ranges from sets based on real-life Rococo period European art, to sets of furniture based on other Nintendo games like Mario<\/em>.<\/p>\n

With each new\u00a0Animal Crossing<\/em> game, many more pieces of furniture\u00a0are added to the series. However, it goes without saying that some pieces of furniture have been removed in more recent games, particularly\u00a0in Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/strong><\/em> on Nintendo Switch. Fans were disappointed to see a lack of Nintendo and Mario<\/em>-themed items in the game, especially since\u00a0Animal Crossing: New Leaf<\/em> included the widest range of Nintendo furniture since the first entry in the series. That being said, a recently announced\u00a0update for\u00a0New Horizons<\/a><\/em> will bring new content based on\u00a0everyone’s favorite plumber, Mario.<\/p>\n

As announced in September’s Super Mario<\/em> 35th Anniversary Direct, Super Mario<\/em>-themed furniture will be making its way to\u00a0the game in March.\u00a0Further, Animal\u00a0Crossing: New Horizons<\/i>‘\u00a0most recent update video<\/a> included a nod to the\u00a0Mario<\/em>-themed update, though did not\u00a0specifying whether it included more than furniture, like clothing items for example.\u00a0And even\u00a0though Nintendo hasn’t revealed all that will come along with the\u00a0Mario<\/em>-themed update, looking at past\u00a0Animal Crossing<\/i> games may show fans what they can expect next month.<\/p>\n

In the original\u00a0Animal Crossing<\/em> game, fans could unlock pieces of furniture from the Mario Theme by telling\u00a0the notorious Tom Nook<\/a>\u00a0certain secret codes that were published in the now-discontinued Nintendo Power magazine. These items included a wallpaper based on the background from the original\u00a0Super Mario Bros.<\/em> game, a flooring based on the series’ classic Block pattern, as well as other miscellaneous pieces of furniture based on the “?” Block, Koopa Shell, Super Mushroom, and more.<\/p>\n

Furniture from the Mario Theme in Animal Crossing: Wild World<\/em> could be downloaded by players at Nintendo DS Download Stations or via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Wild World<\/em>\u00a0took a more 8-bit approach to\u00a0some of the items; blocky, pixelated versions of\u00a0Super Mario Bros.<\/em>‘ iconic Coin,<\/a> Fire Flower, and Bullet Bill Cannon, while adding the Fire Bar and 1-Up Mushroom to the collection.\u00a0Animal Crossing: City Folk<\/em> was the first game in the series that\u00a0didn’t require players to enter a code or download the items from the Mario Theme, instead allowing players to use their slingshot to pop balloons containing the furniture.<\/p>\n

In City Folk<\/em>, the\u00a0Super Mario<\/em>-themed furniture took\u00a0Wild World<\/em>‘s 8-bit approach a step further by making every item in the furniture set 8-bit shaped. However,\u00a0Animal Crossing: New Leaf<\/em>‘s Mario Theme smoothed out the furniture set to make the\u00a0items appear how they might look in a more current\u00a0Mario<\/em> game like\u00a0Super Mario 3D World<\/i>.<\/a>\u00a0New Leaf<\/em> also did away with secret codes and downloadable gifts, as players could find furniture from\u00a0the Mario Theme in the game’s Fortune Cookies.<\/p>\n

Finally, although\u00a0Animal Crossing: New Leaf<\/i> is\u00a0New Horizons<\/em>‘ predecessor, it’s worth noting that the Mario Theme also appeared as part of a\u00a0Super Mario<\/i> crossover event<\/a> in the\u00a0Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp\u00a0<\/em>mobile game. Items appeared as they did in\u00a0New Leaf<\/em>, so some fans\u00a0argue that Nintendo will simply bring the items as they appeared in\u00a0Pocket Camp<\/em> over to\u00a0New Horizons<\/em>. However, since the\u00a0Super Mario<\/em> event in\u00a0Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/em> is meant to celebrate\u00a0Mario<\/em>‘s 35th anniversary, other fans think that the\u00a0Mario Theme will appear in a more retro style as it did in\u00a0Animal Crossing: City Folk<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Of course, it’s likely that Animal Crossing:\u00a0<\/em>New Horizons<\/em> could bring players entirely new\u00a0Super Mario<\/em>-themed furniture in order to shake things up. For example, new furniture\u00a0based on\u00a0Super Mario Odyssey<\/i>‘s Moons, or\u00a0Super Mario 3D World<\/em>‘s Super\u00a0Bell seem plausible. Fans have also speculated how exactly they’ll be able to get furniture from the Mario Theme in\u00a0Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Of course, one of the simplest ways would be to obtain the items by popping balloons in the sky,<\/a> as many of the game’s seasonal\u00a0items appear as DIY recipes. It’s unclear whether the Mario Theme will come as a pre-made furniture set, or in the form of DIY recipes, given\u00a0New Horizons<\/em>‘ huge emphasis on the new mechanic.<\/p>\n

Although\u00a0Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp<\/em>‘s crafting system functions differently compared to\u00a0New Horizons<\/em>, it could serve as a base for how crafting the Mario Theme could work. By using\u00a0Bells and\u00a0new Super Mushroom, 1-Up Mushroom, and Mega Mushroom items,\u00a0Pocket Camp<\/em> players could craft every item from the Mario Theme, including clothing.<\/p>\n

Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/em> could adapt this by making the Mario Theme work similarly to Bunny Day items.<\/a> Fans could obtain\u00a0DIY recipes for\u00a0Super Mario<\/em>-themed furniture items from balloons or talking to villagers, and then find Mushrooms, 1-Up Mushrooms, and Mega Mushrooms scattered all over their island, finally using a combination of the items along with other materials to craft the\u00a0Mario<\/em>-themed furniture.<\/p>\n

Although the\u00a0Super Mario<\/em> 35th Anniversary Direct specifically mentioned that\u00a0Super Mario<\/em>-themed furniture would come to\u00a0New Horizons<\/em> in March, the most recent nod to the event didn’t elaborate on what’s coming. While this could mean Nintendo simply doesn’t have much to mention to\u00a0fans, it could also mean that they plan on adding some extra surprises in addition to just\u00a0Mario<\/em>-themed furniture. That could mean adding old clothing items like the Mario, Luigi, and Toad Hats<\/a>, among other surprises.\u00a0Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp<\/em> also included Mario and Luigi t-shirts, Peach’s Crown and Dress, and Wario’s Hat and “‘Stache.”<\/p>\n

It’s possible that the new\u00a0Mario<\/em>\u00a0items could include items from previous games’\u00a0Nintendo sets,<\/a> such as the Banana, Triple Red Shells, and Kart furniture pieces based on the\u00a0Mario Kart<\/em> series. And while it may seem like a long shot, there is also the possibility that Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/em> could bring\u00a0back a\u00a0fully-playable version of\u00a0the first\u00a0Super Mario Bros.<\/i>\u00a0game on the NES, as it appeared in the original\u00a0Animal Crossing<\/em> game. However, for the time being, fans really don’t know what exactly to expect from the collaboration event. Regardless, if it lives up to the rest of\u00a0Mario<\/em>‘s 35th anniversary celebrations, the new event\u00a0is likely\u00a0to surprise fans come\u00a0March.<\/p>\n

Animal Crossing: New Horizons\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>is out now for Nintendo Switch.<\/p>\n
