Microsoft\u00a0has been making strides with the Xbox Game Pass<\/strong> service in the last few years, delivering a functional game subscription service for players to enjoy. Through the Xbox Game Pass service<\/a>, players can access more games than before, and developers can port\u00a0new games to\u00a0a wider audience.\u00a0However, not every video game developer is entirely\u00a0sold on the Xbox Game Pass service.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with Polygon, Josef Fares, developer of A Way Out<\/em> and founder of Hazelight Studios, discussed the new game It Takes Two<\/em>, his focus on co-op, and his opinion on\u00a0Xbox Game Pass<\/a>. Particularly, how developers can get paid through Xbox Game Pass and that\u00a0Fares is unsure if\u00a0it will benefit game developers\u00a0in the long run or not.<\/p>\n

During the interview, Fares did mention it has benefited developers by letting them reach a bigger audience and how it lets players discover more games to play. Which he says\u00a0is\u00a0a great thing to have.\u00a0However, Fares\u00a0brings up the potential problem\u00a0that developers with shorter games could very well get the short end of the stick with\u00a0Xbox Game Pass deals<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fares said that Xbox Game Pass’s business\u00a0model might not be so advantageous to game developers and\u00a0brought\u00a0up a hypothetical\u00a0example to highlight his point. “Let\u2019s say you have a Netflix model and you get paid for the amount of time people play your game. And if you have a shorter game, a narrative game, then you will obviously get less cash for that.” Since there are a fair\u00a0number of short narrative games released each\u00a0year, some developers could be negatively affected by this type of\u00a0model.<\/p>\n

In a past\u00a0interview with The Verge, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer discussed\u00a0Xbox Game Pass and developer payment<\/a>. He said\u00a0that Microsoft made different deals for each developer and was, “experimenting with many different partners, because we don’t think we have it figured out.” There isn’t a single path\u00a0that Microsoft uses to make\u00a0Xbox Game Pass deals with developers which varies based on the specific game.\u00a0As such, payment agreements also varied with\u00a0some wanting to be paid upfront and\u00a0others based on the amount of time their games are played on\u00a0the service.<\/p>\n

Though\u00a0Microsoft hasn’t worked everything out with Xbox Game Pass, Spencer\u00a0was confident the company would continue making progress on this matter and the service would be a boon to game developers.\u00a0Due to the current unknowns, Fares is unsure whether the Xbox Game Pass service will be an\u00a0asset to game developers or not. He said,\u00a0“I\u2019m super open to more people playing games. But if it affects how we make games, then we have a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n
