An open-world role-playing game<\/a> set in J.K. Rowling’s wizarding school of Hogwarts has been on the top of many gamer’s wishlists<\/a> since the books and films were first released. The idea of freely exploring the school’s halls, participating in classes, and interacting with classmates in the upcoming\u00a0Hogwarts Legacy<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>has captured the imagination of the gaming industry, putting an incredible amount of pressure on developer\u00a0Avalanche Software. Possibly due to this weight of expectation, the game has been pushed back to 2022<\/a>; there haven’t been too many complaints about this delay, however, likely due to the\u00a0underwhelming\u00a0release of\u00a0Cyberpunk 2077<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>still fresh in the mind.<\/p>\n

Although the delay is almost certainly a good thing in the long term, it will be leaving some players without an idea of what to play in 2021. Thankfully, there are tons of other excellent games that take place in and around school grounds that will hopefully fill the void until\u00a0Hogwarts\u00a0<\/em>Legacy\u00a0<\/em>is released next year.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Corpse Party<\/h2>\n

Kicking this list off on a dark note, Corpse Party\u00a0<\/em>is a survival horror game<\/a> that tasks players with escaping a haunted school. The story-driven game has five separate chapters, each featuring different endings depending on the player’s decisions throughout each adventure.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Corpse Party\u00a0<\/em>IP certainly isn’t just\u00a0confined to one video game, as numerous sequels, spin-offs, mangas, and films have been released over the years. The original\u00a0Corpse Party\u00a0<\/em>is a great place to start with the franchise, especially because the once Japanese exclusive is now available on Steam.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Unsurprisingly,\u00a0Hogwarts Legacy\u00a0<\/em>is far from being the first\u00a0Harry Potter<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>video game, as each of the wizarding books and films has been given the video game treatment. Movie tie-ins have a bad reputation today for often being low-effort cash-grabs and granted, a few of the\u00a0Harry Potter\u00a0<\/em>games are indicative of this, but\u00a0Chamber of Secrets\u00a0<\/em>certainly isn’t one of them.<\/p>\n

Chamber of Secrets\u00a0<\/em>offers players a fantastic level of freedom, especially for the time of its release, as players are free to explore the castle grounds early into the game to find the numerous secrets hidden\u00a0around the school.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Detention<\/h2>\n

Red Candle Games’\u00a0Detention\u00a0<\/em>is a survival horror RPG set in Taiwan during the 1960s.\u00a0The 2017 release was well-received by fans and critics alike, particularly for its immersive atmosphere<\/a>, exemplified by the game’s Metascore of 83<\/a> and\u00a0<\/em>All Reviews mark of Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam.<\/p>\n

Red Candle Games are best known today for their game\u00a0Devotion<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>which quickly became the source of controversy in China for its criticisms of\u00a0Xi Jinping. The game also caused problems between gamers and GOG when the site controversially U-turned on an announcement that\u00a0Devotion <\/em>would be coming to\u00a0their store<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Although lightsaber combat is\u00a0Jedi Academy<\/em>‘s most beloved feature, the game is also fondly remembered for its encapsulating story that uses the academy to give the player a natural sense of rising through the Jedi ranks, as well as offering new insight into the\u00a0Star Wars<\/em> universe.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Life is Strange<\/h2>\n

Life is Strange<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is a story-driven game that offers a modern interpretation of the graphic adventures that dominated PC gaming in the 80s and 90s<\/a>. The game was separated into five separate episodes that were released sporadically throughout 2015.<\/p>\n

Dontnod Entertainment’s game received tons of praise from fans and critics for its narrative<\/a>, which won numerous\u00a0awards upon release. Accolades for the story included\u00a0Excellence and Innovation in Digital Storytelling from the\u00a0Peabody-Facebook Futures of Media Awards<\/a> and\u00a0Use of Narrative from the\u00a0Develop Industry Excellence Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Academagia: The Making of Mages<\/h2>\n

Academagia: The Making of Mages\u00a0<\/em>is certainly not the most critically acclaimed game on this list, but Black Chicken Studios’ game is worth including nonetheless for\u00a0being\u00a0bearing many similarities to the\u00a0Harry Potter\u00a0<\/em>franchise.<\/p>\n

Academagia\u00a0<\/em>takes players to an ancient wizarding school and lets them attend classes, interact with fellow students, explore the campus, and embark on numerous adventures. The game has a tough learning curve, but it can be a thoroughly enjoyable fantasy life simulator once players get into the swing of it.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>LEGO Harry Potter Collection<\/h2>\n

The second and final\u00a0Harry Potter\u00a0<\/em>game to appear on this list,\u00a0LEGO Harry Potter Collection<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is\u00a0a great value for money package that includes all of the wizarding films in LEGO<\/a> form.<\/p>\n

LEGO Harry Potter Collection\u00a0<\/em>offers players the collectathon gameplay that the\u00a0LEGO\u00a0<\/em>games have become synonymous with while differentiating it from other\u00a0LEGO\u00a0<\/em>titles with the implementation of magic in both combat and puzzle-solving<\/a>. The game also offers a fantastic rendition of Hogwarts castle, with tons of secrets to discover as the player unlocks new characters and spells.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Doki Doki Literature Club!<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Team Salvato’s Doki Doki Literature Club!\u00a0<\/em>may appear to simply be an anime dating simulator\u00a0judging by\u00a0the game’s cover art, and the first few hours of gameplay won’t do much to sway this viewpoint.<\/p>\n

The game will soon delve into a completely different direction, however, as it becomes clear that\u00a0Doki Doki Literature Club!<\/em> is in fact an unsettling and often terrifying horror game. The sudden shift in\u00a0tone isn’t just a gimmick, as Team Salvato’s game acts as a thought providing satire of the dating simulator and visual novel genres.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Persona 5 Royal<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The latest entry into the iconic Japanese-role-playing series, P-Studio’s\u00a0Persona 5 Royal<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was released exclusively on the PlayStation 4 in 2020 to an eye-watering Metascore of 95<\/a>. The game was also nominated for Best Role-Playing at The Game Awards 2020 but ultimately lost out to\u00a0Final Fantasy VII Remake.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Persona 5 Royal\u00a0<\/em>is an enhanced edition of\u00a0Persona 5,<\/em>\u00a0which initially hit stores in 2016. Among the game’s numerous enhancements was the inclusion of new Phantom Thief member\u00a0Kasumi Yoshizawa, as well as a playable third semester.<\/p>\n
