One of the more surprising efforts made by Bungie during its time with the\u00a0Halo<\/em> franchise was\u00a0Halo 3: ODST<\/em>, a spin-off shooter not lead by Master Chief. Featuring the iconic special forces of the\u00a0Halo\u00a0<\/em>universe in starring roles,\u00a0Halo 3: ODST\u00a0<\/em>was the first (and last) first-person shooter where players didn’t play as a Spartan. Even\u00a0Halo: Reach<\/em>, despite not featuring the Master Chief at all, was far different in scope because at the end of the day, players were still Spartans.\u00a0Halo 3: ODST<\/em> emphasized a specific vulnerability and confidence of the franchise in many ways, arguably moreso than\u00a0Reach<\/em>, that a\u00a0Halo Infinite<\/em><\/strong> spin-off could similarly recapture.<\/p>\n

Even as development marches along for\u00a0Halo Infinite<\/em><\/a>‘s fall 2021 release, an\u00a0ODST\u00a0<\/em>style spin-off would be a welcome surprise, assuming\u00a0Infinite<\/em> succeeds. Understandably, 343 Industries kind of has to play it safe with Halo Infinite<\/em>, regardless of how many people still enjoyed\u00a0Halo 5<\/em>. However, assuming\u00a0Infinite<\/em> does well to usher in the new generation of\u00a0Halo<\/em> games, following up with a spin-off in the same vein as\u00a0Halo 3: ODST<\/em> would be a perfect intermediary release before the next major\u00a0Halo<\/em> game.\u00a0There are still various facets of\u00a0Halo<\/em>‘s world outside of the Master Chief’s perspective that 343 should explore, without interrupting\u00a0Halo Infinite<\/em>‘s long-term momentum.<\/p>\n

What’s special about\u00a0Halo 3: ODST<\/em><\/a> is that it grew exponentially from a humble expansion of the base\u00a0Halo 3<\/em> experience into a full-on standalone release. Bungie had the confidence to take players away from the\u00a0Master Chief, if briefly, to tell a story usually relegated to the many\u00a0Halo<\/em>\u00a0novels and other forms of media. Since 343 Industries has taken the mantle of responsibility for the\u00a0Halo<\/em> franchise, it’s spread about equal halves of its time playing it safe and experimenting with storytelling.\u00a0Halo 4<\/em> played out relatively neutral through a largely exterior and standalone story for the Master Chief, while\u00a0Halo 5: Guardians\u00a0<\/em>took many creative liberties in the follow-up.<\/p>\n

However, many fans had expressed discontent with\u00a0Halo 5.<\/em>\u00a0Not only did the game (and, to some extent, its marketing) set expectations for what would be a very different\u00a0Halo\u00a0<\/em>game, but the campaign in particular was a major gripe for many. On the flip side,\u00a0Halo Wars 2<\/em> was an ambitious effort by 343 Industries to tell an original\u00a0Halo<\/em> story, and it was largely received positively. Even if the game didn’t have a particularly climactic ending, it did potentially set up for a tie-in to\u00a0Halo Infinite<\/em><\/a> with its cliffhanger ending. 343 Industries certainly has the chops to tell an original\u00a0Halo<\/em> story, it just hasn’t quite found its balance with the series post-Bungie.<\/p>\n

Assuming\u00a0Halo Infinite<\/em> receives positive critical\/commercial reception, that could certainly open up the\u00a0possibility<\/em> of an in-universe\u00a0Halo\u00a0<\/em>spin-off. Whether that’s likely or not is a whole different question, even though 343 Industries’ Bonnie Ross has encouraged the idea of more Halo<\/em> spin-offs in the future<\/a>. However, assuming 343 Industries wants to take the ambitious route of storytelling between mainline\u00a0Halo<\/em> entries, there’s plenty of source material and events throughout\u00a0Halo<\/em> canon worth exploring. Similar to\u00a0Halo 3: ODST<\/em>, there’s a couple key points in\u00a0Halo<\/em>‘s past ripe for storytelling opportunities.<\/p>\n

The most immediate focus would be the gap in time between\u00a0Halo 5: Guardians<\/em> and the supposed year\u00a0Halo Infinite<\/em> is meant to take place. Not counting\u00a0the events of\u00a0Halo Wars 2<\/em>, there’s about two years of in-universe time between the two mainline\u00a0Halo<\/em> games. Obviously, based on what\u00a0Halo Infinite<\/em> has already teased at length, humanity suffered a huge loss at the hands of the Banished<\/a>. Regardless of whether or not Master Chief was there or not, it’d be interesting if those specific events were the subject of a spin-off story.\u00a0Halo Infinite<\/em> will undoubtedly touch on what happened, though it necessarily won’t have the same specificity as a standalone game.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, another significant portion of\u00a0Halo<\/em> lore to focus on for a spin-off would be the pre-Covenant Insurrection occurring throughout\u00a0humanity’s many colonies. While mainline\u00a0Halo<\/em> games have rarely touched on the Insurrectionists<\/a>, and\u00a0Halo: Reach<\/em> only briefly references them, the human Insurrectionists are a big part of\u00a0Halo<\/em>‘s extended universe. Prior to the Human-Covenant war, humanity was embroiled in a civil war with fellow humans who rejected the UNSC’s government and military as a threat of nationalism.<\/p>\n

Not to mention various other subjects or characters in\u00a0Halo<\/em> canon that’d be worth exploring, whether that’s through a first-person shooter, or other genres. The possibilities are certainly endless, but those are the prime suspects of 343 Industries did indeed develop an\u00a0ODST\u00a0<\/em>style spin-off after\u00a0Halo Infinite<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Halo Infinite\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>is planned to release in fall 2021.<\/p>\n
