With the help of iconic franchises like\u00a0The Elder Scrolls<\/em><\/a>, Grand Theft Auto<\/em><\/a>, and\u00a0Fallout<\/em><\/a>, the open-world subgenre of gaming has skyrocketed to the forefront of the gaming industry in recent years. Numerous factors make open-world games so appealing, particularly the level of freedom and the sheer amount of content available, often making the games great value for the money.<\/p>\n

The success of open-world games\u00a0has, unsurprisingly, led to numerous publishers releasing such games, which can often result in some enjoyable titles getting lost in the crowd.\u00a0 The games on this list, which were all released from 2016 onwards, either didn’t get the attention that they deserved upon release or were perhaps unfairly dismissed by fans and critics.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Just Cause 4<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The latest entry in the\u00a0Just Cause<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>series didn’t try to re-invent the wheel, opting instead to keep the same over-the-top gameplay that its predecessors were beloved for.\u00a0Just Cause 4<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>differentiates itself from the previous entries,\u00a0however, by ramping up the ridiculous elements of its gameplay even further with frequent extreme weather conditions and bizarre weapons like the lightning gun being thrown into the mix.<\/p>\n

Just Cause 4<\/em>‘s Metascores ranged from 65 to 70, a\u00a0noticeable drop from the previous three games which scored in the 70s and 80s. Granted, the story and campaign aren’t the best, but\u00a0messing around with the sandbox side of the gameplay<\/a> can provide hours of entertainment.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

On the complete opposite end of the spectrum to the action-heavy\u00a0Just Cause 4<\/em> is\u00a0Prideful Sloth’s 2017 release\u00a0Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles<\/em>, a game that features no combat whatsoever.<\/p>\n

Following a dramatic boat crash, players find themselves on a\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em><\/a>-like island.\u00a0Yonder<\/em>‘s gameplay predominantly consists of fetch questing and exploration, which may sound tedious and uninteresting to some people, but for those that want to play a laid back, casual open-world game,\u00a0Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles\u00a0<\/em>is certainly worth checking out.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>No Man’s Sky<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what the perception of\u00a0No Man’s Sky<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and its creator\u00a0Hello Games is in 2021. Some would say that the company burnt all bridges with fans after\u00a0No Man’s Sky<\/em>‘s disastrous launch, whereas others would say that the developer has fully redeemed itself for the frequent improvements to the game that have greatly improved the product for no extra cost to consumers.<\/p>\n

The redemption arc that the game has been on is why\u00a0No Man’s Sky\u00a0<\/em>has found itself leaving\u00a0articles with “overrated” in the title and winding up on ones such as this. The fact that many\u00a0Cyberpunk 2077<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>owners are hoping that the game ends up like\u00a0No Man<\/em>‘s\u00a0Sky\u00a0<\/em>is one of the most telling factors\u00a0as to how far the space exploration game has come.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>The Witness<\/h2>\n

The Witness<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is the latest release from game designer Jonathan Blow, who is best known for the classic indie puzzle-platformer <\/a>Braid<\/a>. <\/em>2016’s\u00a0<\/em>The Witness\u00a0<\/em>is a common case of fans and critics being divided on a game, as many critics loved The Witness<\/em>, including IGN who included the game in their\u00a0Top 100 Video Games of All Time list<\/a>, but many consumers were very vocal about their dislike.<\/p>\n

This dislike is exemplified by the game’s user scores on Metacritic, which\u00a0are as low as 6.9 on Xbox One<\/a>. Granted,\u00a0the tricky puzzle game<\/a> won’t appeal to everyone, but the creativity and ingenious design of the line puzzles and beautiful open-world ensures that\u00a0The Witness<\/em> can be classed as underrated, as\u00a0it\u00a0deserves to be considered among the best open-world and best puzzle games of all time.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Eastshade<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Eastshade Studios’ indie adventure game Eastshade\u00a0<\/em>is the second game on this list that begins with\u00a0players being involved in a boat crash that takes them to an island. Much like the aforementioned\u00a0Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles<\/em>, a boat crash isn’t indicative of the gameplay in\u00a0Eastshade,\u00a0<\/em>as the pace soon shifts to a more relaxing and meditative one.<\/p>\n

Eastshade\u00a0<\/em>puts players on a beautiful, immersive island<\/a> and lets them explore and paint the scenery around them.\u00a0Painting isn’t all that the player can do, however, as there are numerous NPCs to interact with who often provide side quests.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Death Stranding<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Death Stranding<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was released in 2019, making it\u00a0Kojima Productions’ first game since their public breakup with Konami<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 which caused the ending of\u00a0Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>to be rushed, and\u00a0Silent Hills\u00a0<\/em>to be canceled<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To say that\u00a0Death Stranding\u00a0<\/em>was divisive upon release would be an understatement, as struggling to traverse the game’s rocky and bumpy terrain was enough for some people to completely dismiss it.\u00a0The game certainly didn’t deserve such dismissal, as although the gameplay is understandably not for everyone,\u00a0Death Stranding\u00a0<\/em>provides a memorable adventure that will encapsulate many people.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Watch Dogs 2<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

In many ways,\u00a0Ubisoft’s original\u00a0Watch Dogs<\/em><\/a> game was\u00a0reminiscent of another\u00a0title\u00a0from the French company, the original\u00a0Assassin’s Creed<\/em><\/a>;\u00a0<\/em>in the sense that both games were rough around the edges, but clearly had tons of potential.<\/p>\n

Watch Dogs 2<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>doesn’t manage to instantly capture its predecessor’s potential like the classic\u00a0Assassin’s Creed II<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>did, but it still provides a fantastic open-world experience that will appeal to fans of Rockstar’s\u00a0Grand Theft Auto V<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>A Short Hike<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Adam Robinson-Yu’s\u00a0A Short Hike<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was released in 2019 and is another game on this list that prioritizes laid-back exploration over intense combat.\u00a0A Short Hike\u00a0<\/em>tasks player with exploring its map to find golden feathers, which will help the player to scale the world’s peak.<\/p>\n

Like any good open-world game, there are also a ton of side ventures to partake in, such as fishing, racing, and competing in the unique\u00a0beachstickball mini-game. The indie\u00a0title was awarded one of indie gaming’s most prestigious awards, the\u00a0Seumas McNally Grand Prize from the\u00a0Independent Games Festival Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n
