From Taika Waititi to Ryan Coogler, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been inviting increasingly high-caliber directing talent to helm its action-packed superhero blockbusters<\/a>. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Do the Right Thing<\/em> director Spike Lee said he\u2019d be open to joining their ranks. However, while he\u2019d take a meeting with Marvel<\/strong><\/a>, he\u2019s not such a fan of the company\u2019s closest rival, DC, so don\u2019t expect a Spike Lee Batman<\/em> movie any time soon.<\/p>\n

When asked about the opinions of filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, who don\u2019t think Marvel\u2019s blockbusters are real cinema, Lee said, \u201cI have nothing against Marvel. I grew up reading Spider-Man comic books<\/a>.\u201d However, he added that he\u2019s not as forgiving to a different titan of superhero comics: \u201cTo me, DC Comics was always corny.\u201d When the interviewer asked if he was trying to stoke a civil war between Marvel and DC fans, Lee chuckled, \u201cI\u2019m just saying, I was all about Marvel.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lee made it clear that he wasn\u2019t actively seeking a job from Kevin Feige<\/a>, but that he wouldn\u2019t rule out working with Marvel Studios: \u201cIf the right opportunity comes across, I\u2019m not campaigning for it, but I will give it consideration.\u201d While most of Lee\u2019s films are straight dramas dealing with social issues, like Malcolm X<\/em> and BlacKkKlansman<\/em>, he has dabbled in pulpier genres in the past. He made a twisty heist thriller with Inside Man<\/em>, a Vietnam War epic with his most recent work,\u00a0Da 5 Bloods<\/em>, and neo-noir actioner with his 2013 English-language remake of Oldboy<\/em>. However, he has yet to take on a straight superhero movie.<\/p>\n

The closest that Lee came to making a superhero movie was a project he developed about the Nightwatch character<\/a> for Sony Pictures\u2019 own shared universe of Marvel films. Edward Ricourt wrote the initial script before Sony approached Lee about directing, and he confirmed his interest and got Cheo Hodari Coker to work on rewrites. However, the project eventually stalled and Lee dropped out a few months later.<\/p>\n

Any potential Marvel project will have to wait until Lee is done with his next project<\/a>, which he set up in November last year. The movie will be a musical based on the origins of Pfizer\u2019s erectile dysfunction drug Viagra. Lee co-wrote the script with Kwame Kwei-Armah, adapted from an Esquire article titled \u201cAll Rise: The Untold Story of the Guys Who Launched Viagra\u201d by David Kushner. Stew Stewart and Heidi Rodewald, best known for the Tony-winning musical Passing Strange<\/em>, will write the musical\u2019s original songs.<\/p>\n

The movie has no confirmed release date as of yet.<\/p>\n
